Outreach Preparation

Three weeks before our program, we have started with our


first discussion. Our first discussion was on what program are we
going to do for this outreach program. Since we are all learning to
be future teachers in music, so we all agreed to make a program
that will teach children about some basics of music.
We decided that our target for this program would be
preschool students which will be either five years old or six years old
students. This is due to avoid making any crashes with the primary
school examinations as that time of period is around examination
period. The school that we choose initially during the discussion was
SK Methodhist Tanjung Malim because it was nearer and there is a
kindergarden in that school. The time and date was also discussed
during the discussion. Due to avoid any crashes with our classes, we
decided to held the program two weeks before our mid-term break.
In our second discussion that was held a few days after our
first meeting, we started to discuss on the activities that we are
going to do for the program. First we discussed on the song that we
are going to teach the children to sing. Next we had ideas on
teaching them some rhythm clapping, from there we thought of
doing shakers that would be more interesting for the childrens. We
also planned on teaching them dancing. Therefore we thought of the
song Si Tommy which was the malay version of the song Hockey
Pockey. It is a great song for the kids as it also teaches the children
to differ front and back through music and dancing. This is also
where we started to think of creative teaching which is also the way
to teach children in a more active and fun way.We also planned
extra activities in case if anything happens which are games like
musical chairs and music and movements.
So after that discussion we started to do surveys on the
materials that we are going to use so that we are able to set our
budget. We needed to find green beans and cups with lids to supply
for the kids. Initially we planned to supply for 25 shildrens so we
went to search for the portion of 30. But then after when we went to
meet the teacher in the school, we found out that there was only 3
students available for us to do the program which are the four years
old as the five and six years old students will be having their exams.
Therefore, we went to try and as k for the other school which is a
chinese school just opposite the Tanjung Malim KTM station named
(I forgotten the name of the school). We met one of the teacher
there and she agreed to let us do the program with her 6 years old
students. The class contsist of 36 students which was a bit more
number of students than we expected.
Then we had our second meeting in the library to discuss on
our proposal. In the proposal we wored it out together by dividing
parts for everyone to think about and then discuss and compile the
parts together. We even continued to survey the price of the cups
that we need to use for the bean shaker making online through

Tesco. From the then we compile everything including the motive for
doing this program, the estimated agenda for the program, the
budget of our supplies and etc. After that we printed the proposal
and brought it to our lecturer, Dr. Aslina to do a check up on our
proposal before we are able to pass it up to the school. There were
mistakes in the proposal that was we did not have any innovation in
our proposal. Therefore we discussed it again and then editted and
added our innovation that we made for this program. Then again we
sent the latest proposal to Dr. Aslina for the final check up and
getting her signature so that we are able to pass up to the school so
that we are able to do the program as we planned.
As the final touch, we went back to the school and passed the
final proposal to the school to comfirm our program date and time.
Therefore from this process we realise there were so many
procedure that is needed to be made before having a program.
Furthermore, we also learnt that we need to take account for the
feelings of the students when we choose activities such as musical
chairs. This is because by playing musical chairs, the students that
loses may cry and would make the situation quite hard to control as
our program is to bring joy to the children. We were meant to let the
childrens to learn music happily and not by ending up in crying. This
is also really important in the future that how are we going to plan
on our teaching plan everyday with students by considering their
feeling to make the learning outcome for the students to be more
effective.
Two days before the program we went to buy all the materials
that we were going to use. We also bought some biscuits for the
children as a small gift for them to thank them for their cooperation
with us in the end of our program as and encouragement. Then the
night before the program, we had our final rehearsals on how we
were going to teach the children on the next day. We did the
rehearsals over a few time and also made 40 small goody bags out
of colour papers for them. The coloured paper bags were then
decorated with different colours an designs with cute drawings on
them. Then we were ready for our program the nex day.
