Teacher: Brent Seifferlein Objectives: Students will gain a solid understanding in the concepts of genetic engineering. Students will be exposed to vocabulary for the third section and begin reviewing the chapter. Standards: Students will understand the basic concepts of genetic engineering, recombinant DNA, gene transfer and genetically engineered plants. Materials: Science textbook, notebook paper, iPad Anticipatory Set: (5-10 minutes) I will have the first slide of the Powerpoint displayed. Ask students questions to gauge their understanding of genetic engineering. What do you think of if you hear genetic engineering? Can you think of any examples of genetic engineering?. I will allow time for the students to respond to these questions and have a short discussion about their thoughts. I will then display the first Powerpoint slide showing Spiderman, Captain America, and Wolverine. I will briefly discuss how genetic engineering has made these superheroes the way they are. I will then pass out a worksheet for the students to fill out. The worksheet will have an area for them to fill out a series of idea for how they could make modifications to anything to make themselves or anything around them better. There will also be a section for them to fill out any examples of real genetic modifications they might be able to think of. We will then come together as a group and discuss some of their ideas and real genetic modifications. Teaching: Input (20-30 minutes) We will read through section 3 of the chapter. We will pause to discuss the different vocabulary words and ideas to enhance the students understanding of the concepts within. Modeling I will display and explain what is expected for the anticipatory activity. I will also read the first paragraph of the section. Checking for Understanding (10-15 minutes) During the reading, we will pause for discussion and to make sure that the students understand the concepts and vocabulary within the section. After reading, we will begin a game of Kahoot! Because we will be at the end of the chapter, the game will cover all three sections of the chapter. If time permits, we will begin the chapter review. Guided Practice: (10-15 minutes) The students will fill out their notebook paper for the anticipatory set. I will circulate about the room to make sure they are staying on task. We will take turns reading paragraphs from the section. We will pause to discuss what we have read. We will go through the chapter review together. We will take turns reading the questions and answering them together as a class. Closure: Today we discussed the ideas of genetically modifying living organisms in an attempt to enhance them. When you go home, look in your refrigerator to see if you have any products marked GMO.
