AbouT the DialecTs of Two Muslim CommuniTies: the
Pomaks in Cheche and the Torbeshi in Gora
The article explores phonetic, lexical and sociolinguistic facts from the speech of the population from
Christian and Muslim religion in the two border areas:
Southeast Bulgaria and Northern Greece, Eastern Albania
and Western Macedonia. The linguistic unity and the belonging of these dialects to the Bulgarian linguistic continuum is evident.

Language and IdenTiTy
The paper presents several language-identification
models based on the attitudes of the native speakers of the
so-called Pomak language in Northern Greece written down
by T. Mangalakova (a journalist). The prevailing attitude is
our (we) pomatski (language). The possessive pronoun
"our" differentiates this community from others with its cultural and religious adherence to the Muslims of the Bulgarian Rhodopes, with the majority of whom these speakers
are connected by kinship. The two other identification characteristics are Pomaks ( Turks) and Muslims ( Turks
and = Turks), and the language is most often defined as
"pomatski". The attitudes and opinions concerning the nature of the language are hesitant, too: according to some it

is different from the urumski language (Greek), Turkish and

Bulgarian, while according to others: pomatski = our; pomatski = Bulgarian, pomatski = Turkish; pomatski = Bulgarian + Greek + Turkish + Slavonic.
Against the background of this "multiple" identity
manifested in subjective evaluation attitudes the objective
picture of the linguistic data shows that the so-called Pomak
language shares all the features of Rhodope dialects on the
territory of Bulgaria a common reflex of the Old Bulgarian nasal and "er" vowels (, a, ), akavism, triple article
and case forms in the names, specific word order, etc.
Unlike the Rhodope dialects within the borders of
Bulgaria which are strongly influenced by the literary language, mainly through the media, the South Rhodope dialects across the border have been conserved and have preserved a more archaic stage of the evolution of those dialects with a preserved vowel , declensional article, and
archaic vocabulary.
Whether the recent attempt at codification the
written-regional norm of the Bulgarian language will bear
results, will be evident in the language policy of the Balkan
countries, especially the Greek language policy.

This is a very politicized discourse, to which we can

make an objective assessment due to data of the language
and the linguistic picture of the world of the population in
the contact zones. The subject of this study were the Goranci Balkan-Slavic community, inhabiting a compact
geographical area Gora and the part of the Serbian enclaves. Gora is the marginal land in Albania and Macedonia, and most of it lies within the borders of Kosovo.
Goranci is a small, late Islamized Slavic community,
whose native language a part of the Bulgarian-Macedonian dialect kontinuum is used only as an everyday family laguage.
Dynamic social processes in the Balkan conflict region and the processes of the globalization seriously affect
under the linguistic behavior of the population and impact
on identity, the specifics of which are closely linked with
the mentality of homo balkanicus.
This study was conducted on the basis of data collected by the author in the recent years in multi-ethnic Kosovo region and was illustrated by official documents.

The article dwells upon the language of Muslim
Slavs in Elbasan. The term Muslim Slavs is applied as
an umbrella term to avoid unnecessary political connotations with several national movements aiming at the Slavs

seems to have no connection to the Slavic population
known to have existed in the area from 15th century, the
latter appears to have been completely absorbed by the

dwellers of Elbasan are first or second generation migrants
from the area of Golloborda and their speech has traces of
other Slavic idioms (e.g. Standard Macedonian), but is
also deeply influenced by Albanian.

Bosnians, Bosniaks, Muslims:
The conflicT of the idenTiTies
The Muslim inhabitants of Bosnia and Herzegovina
have a special place among the Slavic peoples of Islamic
religion. They are perhaps the only population group among
all the various groups of Islamized Slavs that continues to
foster and develop its specific identity in the modern world.
This was greatly facilitated by the establishment of Bosnia
and Herzegovina as an independent state in the early 1990s.
The authors attention is focused on the transformation and
strengthening of the groups self-awareness and, specifically, on the cultural component of the process in question.
We are talking about the process of nation-building, understanding nation in the civic sense of this word (being
citizens of the same state), as well as about the groups increasing ethnic self-awareness.
The author considers it to be of great importance that
BiH has a long tradition of coexistence of people with of
different cultural and religious background in its territory.
Late in the 20th century BiH encountered problems of
fragmentation in various segments of its social life, absolutization of ethnic and religious differences, and administrative divisions. Existing circumstances make it necessary
to consider the post-conflict situation as well as the citizens

The modern design of idenTiTy on The example of the
macedonians muslims
The report content is conceptualized in three parts: 1)
the historical context for the islamization of the Macedonians; 2) the theories of ethnicity and the construction of
personal, collective, confession identity on the example of
a part of the Macedonian ethnos with the islamic religion;
3) a contemporary, present-day situation with the personal
and the collective identity of the Macedonians with the
islamic religion (Torbeshi).
The first part relies on data that are presented in the
Turkish Census Defteri, which is stored in the State Archive in Istanbul, from which with great precision we gain
information about the population and the settlements in
Macedonia, which was part of the Ottoman empire.
Through them, we receive the information about the first
islamized Macedonian families, as well as the degree of
intensity with which took place the islamization. The second part contains the theoretical convictions for ethnicity,
as well as the personal and the collective identity of the
islamized Macedonians (Torbeshi) expressed by the analysis of part of the field research for the personal feelings
of the members of this cultural community in the Republic
Macedonia.
In the third part is considered the type of institutional
connectivity, and personal/collective identification of the
islamized Macedonians (Torbeshi) through the former
Cultural-scientific meetings of the Macedonians, Muslims,
and through today's Party for european future (PEF).

The problem of the Bulgarian-speaking Muslims in
the South Rhodopes, today in the borders of the Republic
of Greece, is becoming more and more serious. Feeling

and ethnolinguistic identity of Slavic Muslims in the Sandak region of Serbia (community of Tutin). In October

of The regions of CenTral Bosnia
During the field ethno-linguistic expeditions 20112012 we studied the folk tradition of the Muslims in Central Bosnia (Bjelashnica, Treskavica, the Visoko region)
according to the special program, that has been successfully used in other regions of the Balkans. The collected data
showed that Muslims in Central Bosnia still serve archaic
cultural specificity, known by the Southern Slavs in the
various local variants, regardless of their religious affiliation. Contamination of Slavic (or Southern Slavic) and
specifically Muslim context distinguishes the different
spheres of the national tradition of Bosnian Muslims. It is
particularly obvious when family rituals (including subsections: Birth, Wedding, Death) and folk mythology are under investigation.

(Golloborde ): varianTs of EasTern Albania
This text represents the text and musical versions of
the songs that are performed by the Slavs-Muslims in the
region Golobordo (Albania), known or common also on
the territory of Bulgaria and Republic of Macedonia. Due
to its geographical position, which cause also the dialectal
features of the region, Golobordo turned back to the
West and is looking to the East.

This can be traced in the absence of connection with

Albania and the Albanian musical traditions. The presence
of "golobordo" variants of songs in the East of Albania is
observed as in strictly ritual female song repertoire, considered as the oldest layer, and (more significantly) in a festive and everyday lyrics, where are widely presented songs
of the later formation, the so-called rural-urban type.
The traditional song gives the opportunity to describe the location of the Slavic Muslims in Golobordo in
relation to their Eastern neighbors and to the West Albania, whose citizens they are.

SecularizaTion and The Re-IslamizaTion
The paper aims at commenting on the issue of different tendencies in the religiosity of Muslim Bulgarians. A
process of revival of Islam is observed among some Muslim Bulgariansgroups. It is there where religion is the basis around which identity is constructed. Having returned to
Bulgaria after their training in Arab countries, young Muslims are trying to revise some of the rules of traditional
Islam in their home villages. The Muslims in Bulgaria belonging to different regions, ethnic groups, age, education
and social status have a different view of what true Islam
is. Different interpretations often lead to mutual accusations
of deviations. The examples of such deviations that are
usually pointed out are the extremes in their two dimensions fundamentalism and secularism. In fact, the diversity of the Islam professed shows that Islam both in Bulgaria and in the world has many faces. In Bulgaria, there are

The Bulgarian muslims from Lovech region:
language and culture
The author presents the results of her ethno-linguistic
investigation (2013) of the Bulgarian Mislims, so called
lovchanski pomaci, who is located between Lovech and
Teteven. The paper examines contemporary status of the
dialect and the traditional folk culture. The special attention
is paid to the dialect terms used in rituals and customs.
The paper is based on the ethnolinguistic approach to
the dialect (micro- and macrodialect) like not only the territorial fact, but also an ethnographic and cultural studies
unit, if popular culture is isolated from the ethnographic
framework. On the example of the terminology of the spiritual culture of muslim village Galata in Bulgaria, the author shows a close interlacing of the elements and diachronically different components in the folk spiritual culture
and its reflections in the local vocabulary.
