(Turn to Personal Statements Home Page) When I look back to my personal statements at the start of semester 1, I realize that my teaching pedagogy has grown to include new ideas that I have learned throughout my time at the BEd program. Initially, my reasons for why I want to become a teacher were to promote life-long learning. Currently I would like to edit that statement by adding that I would promote life-long learning by addressing students learning needs in the classroom through differentiated instruction. Furthermore, as I self-reflect on how I have changed in the program, I have become more self-aware of both my strengths and weaknesses in teaching. In terms of my strengths and weaknesses in teaching, I find that my strengths in teaching are in my friendliness and empathy towards students and colleagues. However, I can sometimes be too nice towards others which can be a weakness as some may take advantage of my friendliness. In future, I aim to ensure that I maintain my self-awareness to ensure that I can improve upon my actions in the school environment. (Turn to Reflective Analysis) Goals for my first-year in teaching are: to get involved in the school community, building strong communication skills, and knowing my students. I think that getting involved in the school community is very important to show initiative about student success in extra-curricular activities. During my first year, I would be excited to participate in extra-curricular programs like the Me to We club, Lego League and Forest of Reading book club programs as I already have experience participating in these clubs. My second goal is to build strong communication skills by collaborating with other teachers in the department on long range plans, communicating with parents about their childs progress in the class, and communicating with students about their progress in the class. My third goal is to know my students learning needs and in turn build an inclusive learning environment. I think that my third goal would not have been present during the start of the program as I did not think that knowing your students would in turn promote an open-minded classroom. However, during my second placement, I learned that mutual respect between students and teachers makes a significant difference in how students view their classes which reduces the amount of time spent on classroom management. Overall, my vision of teaching and learning has grown to include new ideas that have shaped my teaching pedagogy and my own personality as I value mutual respect and equitable learning environments to ensure that students become critical life-long learners in society.
