LESSON OUTCOMES
Social Studies 3.1.1: Appreciate similarities and differences among people and communities:
demonstrate an awareness of an interest in the beliefs, traditions, and customs of groups and
communities other than their own.
Science 3-11.10: Demonstrate knowledge of the needs of animals studied, and demonstrate
skills for their care.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. By the end of the lesson, students will demonstrate the needs of animals by creating a visual
conservation habitat. (Creating)
2. By the end of the lesson, students will identify the specific needs of animals in national parks.
(Understanding)
3. By the end of the lesson, students will understand the beliefs, traditions, and customs of FNMI
culture in relation to conservation through prompting questions to the guest speaker.
(Understanding)

MATERIALS

Create a Habitat Template


Guest Speaker
Pencil crayons
Markers

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Have the posters from lesson #1 hung up on the walls throughout the classroom.
Template is ready to be handed out after the guest speaker.
Confirm that the guest speaker is available to be there.
Meet with the guest speaker prior to the day to discuss relevancy of presentation.
Have some written questions for a few students to ask after the guest speaker has finished.

PROCEDURE
Introduction
1. Introduce the guest speaker (Remind the students about the expectations when
listening to a guest speaker.)
2. Have all the students go to the carpeted area and put on their rabbit ears. These
are their super enhanced listening ears. It is an exercise where they put their
hands cupped behind their ears to show us that they are ready to listen.
3. Ask the students to think of any questions they may have to ask the guest
speaker after their presentation.

Thank the speaker for coming in and presenting.
Have the students return to their seats as the guest speaker
leaves.

Discussion
1. The teacher will then ask guiding questions for the students
to answer as a group and the teacher will write down the
answers on the board (This is so that the students can look
back at this information for the writing aspect of the
assignment). Questions can include: What are the First
Nations view on animal protection?, What are the First
Nations beliefs about national parks? and Why are
national parks important?.
2. Write the questions on the board and write the students
answers underneath the question.

1. Describe the assignment to the class


a. Students will be given the Create a Habitat template. The
students are to create a birds-eye-view of the habitat
required by their LESSON 1 animal.
b. They will also be required to write a justification of the
habitat requirements. The writing will be a minimum of four
sentences and they must write in complete sentences.
c. Discuss the grading rubric for the assignment.
d. The drawing should take 15 minutes to complete.
2. Markers, rulers, crayons, pencil crayons, spare
pencils and other equipment will be provided in boxes to
each desk group (desks are already arranged in islands of
four).
3. Explain to the students that they must start on the
drawing
aspect of the assignment as they will write
about the picture that they have drawn.
4. Have a 5 minute brain break after 15 minutes of
work.
Play a Just Dance youtube video (What Does the Fox Say?)
and have the students get up and dance to the song.
Allow students to go get a drink of water before returning to
their seats. (Water bottles must be returned to designated
bins)
5. Repeat instructions for the justification portion of
the assignment. Continue on the assignment. Inform
students that they have 15 more minutes to complete their
sentences.
Closure
Have students collect their poster and their sheet and hand it
in to the teacher to staple together.
Once finished let the students know that they
may go to the silent reading area until the class
is finished.
Remind the students that there will be time to
finish the assignment in tomorrows class.
