INTRODUCTION

A. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to compare the effectiveness of A

herbal ginger powder mixture as a body wrap vs commercial fat

burning/weight loss medicines or supplements. Body wraps are easy
to make and require only 2 man ingredients. The first phase of the
project involves 3 tests with 3 respondents between the researchers
product and the commercial brands.
The final phase involves the comparison of the data by t-test to
see which of the Hypotheses (Alternative and Null) should be accepted
and rejected. By identifying if the body wrap is more effective we can
provide people with an easy to make alternative to losing body fat
without worrying about side effects.. This will allow for more individual
consideration of homemade products which can give better effects
than those made in a laboratory.

B. Background of the Study

Fat is one of the basic components that make up the structure of your
body. The other components include muscle, water, bone and your organs
Page 4

the brain, liver, kidneys, spleen, stomach, pancreas, and intestines. etc.
All are necessary for normal, healthy functioning.

Body fat can be divided into two categories: Essential fat and storage
fat. As its name implies, essential fat is necessary for normal, healthy
functioning. It is stored in small amounts in your bone marrow, organs,
central nervous system and muscles. In men, essential fat is
approximately 3% of body weight

Ginger is a popular spice. It is high in gingerol, a substance with

powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Ginger contains
chemicals that may reduce nausea and inflammation. Researchers
believe the chemicals work primarily in the stomach and intestines, but
they may also work in the brain and nervous system to control nausea.

Inflammatory disorders such as gastritis, esophagitis, and hepatitis,

which are caused not only by infectious agents such as viruses, bacteria,
and parasites but also by physical and chemical agents like heat, acid,
cigarette smoke, and foreign bodies, are recognized as risk factors for
human cancer. Ginger consumption before exercise might reduce
Page 5

naturally occurring quadriceps muscle pain during moderate-intensity

cycling exercise. This effect may be due to anti-inflammatory effect of
ginger and further investigation need to prove it in human.

Besides from Gingerol. Ginger also contains chemicals such as,

Shogaol, and other structurally-related substances in ginger inhibit
prostaglandin and leukotriene biosynthesis through suppression of 5lipoxygenase or prostaglandin synthetase. Additionally, they can also
inhibit synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1, TNF-

Body lotions are designed to penetrate the skin, leaving it softer, more
hydrated, and younger looking. Lotions have the benefit of containing a
number of beneficial ingredients such as aloe vera, vitamin E, vitamin D,
shea butter, and keratin. All of these bonus ingredients replenish the skin
of its lost moisture, repair damaged skin, and can alleviate various types
of skin conditions.

Body lotion contains moisturizers that counteract any harsh chemicals

that the ginger powder may have. And it also leaves a smooth, fragrant,
blemish-free finish after you use the mixture.
Page 6

C. Statement of the Problem:

Having to burn off those extra calories needs a lot of work, often time
consuming, costly, and most of the time ineffective.
The researchers are proposing a working thesis that has been
developed. A simple, easy to do, and cost-effective. Firstly, create a
mixture out of ginger powder and body lotion. Spread the mixture across
the desired part of the body, add thick layers of the mixture as this
increases the effectiveness of it. Wrap the plastic wrapping sheet around
the body part that is covered in the mixture, take the bandage and wrap it
over the plastic wrapping sheet, tie the bandage and secure. Leave it on
for 12 hours, the researchers suggest that this be done overnight.
The researchers have conducted this experiment to help people lose
unnecessary fat in their bodies without having to buy expensive medicines
that may cause side-effects by providing a herbal alternative.
D. Objectives of the Study:
General Objective:
To make an effective body wrap that is able to reduce body fats
using ginger powder-lotion mixture
Specific Objectives:
Compare the effectiveness of the mixture against medicinal
tablets/capsules used for weight loss.
Page 7

Determine which of the following mixtures is most effective:

o 45 grams ginger powder; 45 grams body lotion
o 30 grams ginger powder; 60 grams body lotion
o 60 grams ginger powder; 30 grams body lotion
Determine if the effectiveness of the mixture and the amount of
ginger powder in the mixture is directly proportional to one

another.
E. Hypotheses:
a. Null Hypothesis: The ginger powder mixture body wrap has not
shown any significant results and has shown 0% effectiveness
b. Alternative Hypothesis: The ginger powder mixture body wrap has
proven to be effective and provides useful results
F. Significance of the Study:

This study aims to provide people with an easy to make, budgetfriendly, effective, and quick way to reduce body fat. Providing step-bystep explanations on the different procedures involved.

G. Scope and Limitation:

The study that has been conducted on August 3, 2016 to August 5,

Eating ginger speeds up your metabolism and promotes
faster weight loss. This is why I decided to try its topical application
and see whether a ginger body wrap would deliver the same
amazing effects like drinking ginger tea, for example.
Really, it is the compression and the body heat generated from the
wrap that does most of the work. So it is okay to be a little creative.
Here is what was handy.

11 Proven Benefits of Ginger
It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, and is closely related
to turmeric, cardomon and galangal. The rhizome (underground
part of the stem) is the part commonly used as a spice. It is often
called ginger root, or simply ginger. Ginger has a very long history
of use in various forms of traditional/alternative medicine. It has
been used to help digestion, reduce nausea and help fight the flu
and common cold, to name a few.

B. Related Studies:
What is a Body Wrap? Proven Effective?
When body wraps were first offered decades ago, linen
sheets were used, says Susie Ellis, president of SpaFinder, Inc., an
industry group based in New York. The wraps were then mostly
called herbal wraps. "'Body wraps' is a term that came to mean
more than herbal wraps," she says, adding that they became
popular in the 1980s and '90s. Eventually, plastic or thermal
blankets replaced the linen sheets.

Do-It-Yourself Body Wrap, It Works!

Lets get into the theory of body wraps and the purpose they
serve. First and foremost, these wraps are temporary and in no way
should be substituted for a healthy diet and exercise. They are a
great (and temporary) quick fix if you need to quickly lose inches to
slip into that little black dress or need to look your best in a bathing
suit. I had a family wedding to attend, and I had been meaning to
test out if they really worked or not.

METHODOLOGY

A. Materials/Equipment
1 piece clean plastic container A container for mixing the

ingredients to not generate a mess.

1 piece clean cloth To dip into the hot water and to place on your

stomach before applying the mixture.

1 piece stirring rod Used to properly stir the ingredients together

to create a smooth texture.

400 grams of Ginger Powder Used as the main ingredient in the

mixture for the body wrap.

400 grams of Body Lotion Is the base of the mixture and what

gives it the cream-like texture.

450 ml warm water Applied on the stomach before mixture.
4 meters of Plastic Food Wrap Used to wrap around the body

region in which the mixture was applied

4 meters of Cotton Bandages Wrapped around the Plastic
Wrapping Sheet to tighten and secure the body wrap.

B. General Procedure
1. First, gather all the materials needed.
Page 14

Creating the mixture:

2. Second, from the 400g of Body Lotion pour 45g of it into the plastic
bowl.
3. From the 400g of Ginger Powder add 45g (roughly 3 - 3
tablespoons ) of Ginger Powder to the Body Lotion.
4. With the stirring rod stir the Body Lotion and Ginger Powder for
exactly 5 mins. It should have a very smooth consistency, that
almost looks like peanut butter.
5. You have created a mixture good for 4-5 applications. Store in a
cool area when not in use.
Applying the Mixture:
6. Firstly, boil 450ml of water in a small kettle or container until it
reaches 70C Celsius, let it cool down a bit.
7. Second, grab a clean towel and insert it into the kettle, apply the
warm towel to the body part you want apply the mixture to.
8. Using a spoon, get a large amount of the mixture and apply it to the
desired body part (ex. belly, arms, and thighs), make sure to add a
thick layer as this increases the effectiveness.
9. Get the 4 meter plastic food wrap and wrap it around the area/body
part in which you applied the mixture.
10. Lastly, wrap the 4 meter cotton bandage around the plastic wrap,
tie and secure it to avoid it from loosening.
11. Wait for 12 hours before removing the body wrap.
12. Wash the plastic wrap and reuse in the next application.
13. Repeat steps 6 to 12.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

A. Findings

The mixture was put to 3 trials with 3 participants, each with different
body structure to achieve a general result. The researchers took into
account the waistline of each of the participant before and after the
application of the mixture and the body wrap (for 12 hours).

The researchers also added three configurations of a balanced

mixture, a heavily concentrated ginger powder mixture, and a heavily

Page 16

concentrated body lotion mixture to see which mixture proves the most
effective:

a. First mixture: 45g Ginger Powder ; 45g Body Lotion

b. Second Mixture: 60g Ginger Powder; 30g Body Lotion

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

A. Conclusions

The researchers have come to the conclusion that the proposed

product has given satisfying results and has even surpassed commercial
brand medicines/supplements that help in losing weight. The researchers
conclude to accept the Alternative Hypothesis and reject the Null
Hypothesis.
Page 23

B. Recommendations

For environmental safety, the researchers recommend that the plastic

wrapping sheet can be recycled from a used plastic food wrap, just wash it
and let it dry and it can be used again. This is also applicable when you
have finished applying it and remove it, you can wash the plastic sheet
and reuse it the next time you apply the body wrap to minimize the
pollution in the earth.
