ThisIndianStandard(FirstRevision)wasadoptedbytheIndianStandardsInstitutionon30
November1983,afterthedraftfinalizedbytheWaterSupplyandSanitationSectionalCommitteehadbeen
approvedbytheCivilEngineeringDivisionCouncil.

Allaspectsofdesign,layoutconstructionandmaintenanceofdrainsforcarriageofwastesandsewage
togetherwithallancilliaryworkslikemanholes,inspectionchambers,etc,havebeengenerallydealtwithin
IS:17421983*.However,acodeofpracticespeciallydealingwiththedesignandlayoutofsoilandwaste
pipesofbuildingswasfeltnecessarytogivedetailedguidanceforthispartofwork.

Thecodecoversthetraditionaltwopipesystemofplumbingandthemodernmethodsofplumbing,
namely,theonepipeandthesinglestacksystem.Inthisrevisionguidanceforthechoiceofplumbingsystem
andsafeguardsforsinglestacksystemhavebeencoveredindetail.Therequirementsforsoilpipe,wastepipe
andventilatingpipehavealsobeenincluded.

Thiscoderepresentsastandardofgoodpracticesand,therefore,takestheformofrecommendations.

Forthepurposeofdecidingwhetheraparticularrequirementofthisstandardiscompliedwith,the
finalvalue,observedorcalculated,expressingtheresultofatestoranalysis,shallberoundedoffin
accordancewithIS:21960.Thenumberofsignificantplacesretainedintheroundedoffvalueshouldbe
thesameasthatofthespecifiedvalueinthisstandard.

Thiscodedealswiththedesign,installationofsoil,wasteandventilatingpipeswheretheyoccurabove
groundbothinsideandoutsidethebuilding.

Rainwaterpipesarenotcoveredbythiscode.
2.TERMINOLOGY

Forthepurposeofthisstandard,thefollowingdefinitionsshallapply.

BackPressureAirorwastewaterfrompipesbeingforcedupthroughtraps,
2.2
BranchVentilatingPipe(B.V.P.)Apipe,oneendofwhichisconnectedtothesystemadjacent
tothetrapofanapplianceandtheothertoamainventilatingpipeoradrainventilatingpipe.Itisfittedto
preventlossofwatersealfromatrapowingtopartialvacuumbackpressure,orsurgingcausedbyair
movementwithinthepipesystem.Italsoprovidesventilationforthebranchwastepipe.

BranchSoilPipe(B.S.P.)Apipeconnectingoneormoresoilappliancestothemainsoilpipe.

BranchWastePipe(B.W.P)Apipeconnectingoneormorewasteappliancestothemainwaste
pipe.

BranchSoilWastePipe(B.S.W.P.)Apipeconnectingoneormoresoiland/orwaste

andwashbasinsandthesoilpipebranchesareallcollectedintoonemainpipewhichisconnected
directlytothedrainagesystem.Gullytrapsandwastepipesarecompletelydispensedwithbutallthe
trapsofwaterclosets,basin,etc,arecompletelyventilatedtopreservewaterseal.
c.SingleStackSystem(seeFig.4Aand4B)Onepipesystemwithouttrapventilationpipework.

FixtureUnitAquantityintermsofwhichtheloadproducingeffectsontheplumbingsystemof
differentkindofplumbingfixturesareexpressedonsomearbitrarilychosenscale.
3.PRELIMINARYDATAFORDESIGN
3.1
Inordertodesignasoilandwastepipessystemaboveground,informationonthefollowingitems
shouldbecollected:
a.NewWorkIntheinitialstages,thereshouldbeconsultationbetweenthelocalauthority,owner,
architectandengineerconcerningthefollowingmatters:
1.Number,positionandtypesofappliancestobeinstalled
2.Positionandsizeofsewersandanyprecautionsnecessarytoensuresatisfactoryworkingofthe
drainagesystemandtoavoidfloodingofthepremisesand
3.Requirementsoflocalauthority.
b.ExistingWorkAnyreportonexistingworkshouldincludethefollowing:
1.Resultsoftests,
2.Detailsofappliancesconnectedtothedrainagesystem,
3.Descriptionoftheconditionofthepipeworkandfittings,and
4.Particularsoftheventilationofthedrainagesystem.
c.InformationRequiredbyLocalAuthorities
1.Notificationontheappropriateformsandparticularsofthepropossdwork,and
2.Drawings.
d.InformationRequiredbythePlumbingContractor
1.DrawingsThearchitectorengineershouldadvisetheplumbingcontractoroftheacceptance
oftheproposalbythelocalauthorityandprovideanexactcopyoftheapproveddrawings.These
drawingsshouldshowanyspecialannotationsmadebythelocalauthority,alsonotesastoany
preparatoryconstructionalworkwhichmayberequiredtoaccommodatethepipework.The
plumbingcontractorshouldbeprovidedwithsufficientcopiesofthelargescaleworking
drawingsoftheinstallationcontainingnotesofanyspecialrequirementsandgivingallnecessary
dimensions.
2.SpecificationTheplumbingcontractorwillrequirecopiesoftherelevantclausesofthemain
specificationwhichshouldincludethefollowing:
1.Generaldescriptionofthework,
2.Informationastostatutoryauthoritiesrequirements,ifany,
3.Descriptionofmaterialsrequired,
4.Methodsoffixingandjointing,and
5.Anyspecialrequirements.

Theworkshallbecarriedoutbyaplumberdulylicensedbylocalauthoritiesinconformitywiththe
ruleslaiddownforthepurpose.
4.TIMESCHEDULE
4.1
Atimeschedulefortheinstallationofthesoilandwastepipeworkshouldbepreparedandco
ordinatedwiththeprogrammeofthemainbuildingwork,particularlywiththatpartofitdealingwiththe
undergrounddrainagesystem.Thisschedulemayrequireadjustmentfromtimetotimetoaccordwiththe
progressofthejob.Thefollowingareimportantpointstobeconsideredinthepreparationofatime
schedule:
a.Dateswhendrawingsarerequired,
b.Datesforthesupplyanddeliveryofmaterials,and
c.Datesforthestartandcompletionofindividualsectionofthework.
5.MATERIAL
5.1
Materialsandcomponentsofthematerialsusedintheconstructionworkdescribedinthecodeshall
conformtotherequirementslaiddownintherelevantIndianStandards.However,wherenoIndian
Standardexistsontheparticularitem,materialsusedshallbeofsatisfactoryqualityandworkmanship
acceptabletotheowner.
5.2
ChoiceofMaterialsforPipesandFittingsThefollowingmaterialmaybeusedforasanitary
pipeworksystem:
a.Asbestoscement[conformingtoIS:1626(Part1)1980*]
b.Castiron(conformingtoIS:15361976),IS:15371976,IS:15381976,IS:17291979,andIS:
39891970)
c.Saltglazedstonewarepipes(conformingtoIS:65119802**)
d.Galvanizedsteelandwroughtiron[conformingtoIS:1239(Part1)1979]and
e.Anyothermaterialasapprovedbythelocalauthority.
*Specificationforasbestoscementbuildingpipesandpipefittings,guttersandgutterfittingsand
roofingfittings:Part1Pipeandpipefittings(firstrevision).
Specificationforcentrifugallycast(spun)ironpressurepipesforwater,gasandsewage(second
revision).
Specificationforverticallycastironpressurepipesforwater,gasandsewage(firstrevision).

5.2.1
Careshouldbetakentoselectmaterialsresistanttocorrosioncausedbytheliquidcarried,by
atmosphericconditions,orbyelectrolysis.
6.DESIGNCONSIDERATIONS
6.1
PipeSystemsThedesigntobeadoptedwilldependonthetypeandplanningofthebuildingsto
whichitistobeinstalledandwillbeoneofthefollowing:
a.Thetwopipesystem(seeFig.2),
b.Theonepipesystem(seeFig.3),or
c.Thesinglestacksystem(seeFig.4Aand4B)
6.1.1
ChoiceofPlumbingSystemWherethesullagefrombathsandkitchenscanbedealtwithseparately
foruseingardeningoranyothersuchpurposes,thetwopipesystemisadvantageous.Obviously,theone
pipesystemismoreeconomicalandhasapplicationwherealltypesofwastewatersaretakeninacommon
sewerlinetotheplaceofdisposalortreatment.Boththesesystemsarefullyventilatedbyasystemof
ventilatingpipe.However,thesedaysthesinglestacksystemwithoutanyventpipesystem,wherethestack
itselfismadetoservetheventrequirementsalsobyrestrictingtheflowinthestack,isbeingused.This
systemisrecommendedwith100mmdiameterstackforupto5storeybuildings.Notmorethantwotoilet
unitscandischargetothesinglestackateachfloorlevel.Foranydifferentcase,thepermissionofthelocal
authorityshallbeobtained.Inhighrisebuildings,apartiallyventilatedonepipesystemisbeingusedwhere
theventstackisconnectedtothedrainagestackortheWCsateachoralternatefloors.Thesafeguardsfor
thesinglestacksystemarestipulatedin6.9.2.Thefullyventilatedsystemdoesnotdemandanyspecial
safeguards.
6.2
PipeCapacitiesPipediametershouldbecalculatedaccordingto4.5.1ofIS:17421983*.
6.2.1
BranchesandstackswhichreceivedischargesfromWCpansshouldnotbelessthan100mm,except
wheretheoutletfromthesiphonicwaterclosetis80mminwhichcaseabranchpipeof80mmmaybe
usedforoutletoffloortraps75mmdiameterpipesmaybeused.
6.2.2
Thegradientofahorizontalbranchshouldnotbeflatterthan1in50andnotsteeperthan1in10.
6.3
LayoutofPipesPipeworkandappliancesshouldbesoarrangedastoallowclosegroupingof
connectionspreferablywithawaterclosetneartothemainsoilpipe.Thelevelofthetrapoutletofan

Pipesshouldbeplaced,fixedandjointedsoastoavoidriskofdamagethroughvariationsin
temperature.Unlesssuitableprecautionsaretaken,thejointingofpipesexposedtoundulyhightemperatures
maybecomeunsatisfactory.Smallwastepipesareparticularlyliabletodamagecausedbythefreezingof
waterfromaleakingtapinplaceswherefreezingnormallyoccours.
6.3.2
Thepipeworkinbranchconnectionsshouldalwaysbearrangedtoallowfreedrainageofthesystem.
Connectionstomainorbranchpipesshouldbesoarrangedastopreventcrossflowfromoneapplianceto
another.Connectionsshouldbemadewithaneasysweepinthedirectionofflowparticularlyinconnection
inthesinglestacksystem(seeFig.4).

Whenthepipesareconcealed,inaccessibleorlaidexposedalongwiththeinternalfaceofthewalls,
theyshouldpreferablybeofcastiron.Inthegroundfloorallthepipes,includingthoselaidontheexternal
faceofthewalls,shouldbeofcastiron.
6.3.2.2
Alljointsinpipeworkandofpipeworktoapplianceshouldbemadeinsuchamannerastobeairtight
andwatertightandtoremainsoduringuse.Careshouldbetakentoensurethatnojointingmaterialprojects
insidetheboreofthepipe.Someflexibilityisdesirablywherethereispossibilityofmovementbetweenthe
pipesorbetweenthepipesandtheappliances.
6.3.2.3
Thejointshallbemadeofneatcementpastewellcaulkedlikelead(withwatercontentnotexceeding
30percent)preferablywithasbestosorhempfibrecementjointsshouldbeavoidedwherethejointsare
likelytobeexposedtodirectsunlightorheat.Whererubberringsareusedforthejointingofexternalpipes,
theannularspaceinthesocketaboveringshouldbefilledwithasuitablemasticcompound.
6.3.3
Bendsshouldbeoflongradiuswherepracticable.Inthecaseofbendsinthebottommostpipesthey
shouldnecessarilybeoflongradiusandshouldpreferablybemadeof135(1/8)bends.
6.3.4
Ampleprovisionshouldbemadeforaccesstoallpipeworkandtheembeddingofjointsinwallsshould
beavoidedasfaraspossible.
6.3.5
Allpipeworkadjacenttolivingorsleepingquartersshouldbeinsulatedagainstsoundtransmissionand

Soilpipesshallpreferablybeofcastiron.Asbestoscementbuildingpipesmayalsobeusedassoilpipes

Thesoilpipeshallbeprovidedwithheelrestbendwhichshallrestonsoundfooting.Itshallbefixed

Everypipeinabuildingforearringoffthewasteoroverflowwaterfromeverybath,washbasinorsink
toadrainshallbeof32to50mmdiameter,andshallbetrappedimmediatelybeneathsuchwashbasinor
sinkbyanefficientsiphontrapwithadequatemeansforinpectionandcleaning.Suchtrapsshallbe
ventilatedintotheexternalairwheneversuchventilationisnecessarytopreservethesealofthetrap.Waste
pipes,traps,etc,shallbeconstructedofiron,head,brass,stoneware,asbestoscementorotherapproved
material.Theoverflowpipefromwashbasins,sinks,etc,shallbeconnectedwiththewastepipeimmediately
abovethetrap.Verticalpipescarryingoffwastewatershallhaveaminimumdiameterof75mm.
NoteWhereverwashbasinsandsinkshaveinbuiltoverflowarrangements,thereisno
needtoprovideoverflowpipesinsuchcases.
6.7.2
Everypipeinabuildingforcarryingoffwastewatertoadrainshallbetakenthroughanexternalwall
ofthebuildingbytheshortestpracticableline,andshalldischargebelowthegratingorsurfaceboxofthe
chamberbutabovethegratingofaproperlytrappedgully.Thewastepipeshallbecontinuedupwards
withoutanydiminutioninitsdiameterand(exceptwhenunavoidable)withoutanybendorangleto

separatepipe,oritmayjointtheMSPand/orMWPabovethefloorlevelofthehighestappliance.Itslower

applianceswhichmayoccurinpractice,withoutthedischargefromoneappliancebeingforcedupinto
another,andeverytrapshouldretainatleast25mmofitssealundertheseconditions.Thetestsshouldbe
designedtomakefullallowanceforthemaximumsuctionandpressureeffectswhichmayoccurasgiven
below:
a.Insmallinstallationswhenalltheappliancesaredischargingtogether,and
b.Inlargeinstallationswhensufficientappliancesaresimultaneouslydischargedtosimulatepeak
