Marketing & Promotions Paid Internship

Signature Editions and University of Manitoba Press are looking for an


enthusiastic, book-loving marketing and promotions assistant. This is a full-
time equivalent, six-month term position split equally between the two
workplaces, i.e. 20 hours at each publishing house per week.

Signature Editions is a literary press with an eclectic list of quality fiction,


non-fiction, poetry and drama. University of Manitoba Press is a scholarly
book publisher specializing in Native studies, Canadian history, ethnic
studies, and literary criticism. As the Marketing and Promotions Intern, the
candidate will gain well-rounded experience in both scholarly and trade book
publishing.

The ideal candidate should have strong written communication and


presentation skills. The applicant should be comfortable in a Mac computer
environment and have a working knowledge of programs such as MS Word,
Excel, InDesign, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Filemaker, e-mail and fax
software. Completion of a formal training program in a related discipline from
a recognized institution plus one year of experience in public relations or
promotions is required. Knowledge of standard promotion and/or public
relations techniques is essential. An acceptable equivalent combination of
education and experience may be considered. Must be able to work as a key
part of a team that considers all aspects of publishing in order to reach the
Press's editorial and financial goals. Demonstrated experience in writing and
preparing print materials for marketing and/or promotion is required.

Representative Duties at Signature Editions:

In conjunction with the publisher, the marketing assistant will be responsible


for planning and delivering the marketing and publicity activities of Signature
Editions, including:
assist in preparing Signatures annual marketing and promotion plan and
budget
organize Signatures participation in sales conferences and make title
presentations to national sales reps
take part in sales conferences, trade fairs and other events to promote
Signature titles
create various sales and advertising materials, including: promotional
copy for all books; creative and dynamic press kits; informative sales rep kits;
catalogues and flyers; print advertisements; and website updates
plan, organize and oversee special events including book launches, tours
and other promotional activities
develop and maintain good relationships with accounts
maintain regular contact with and pitch story ideas to the book media
submit Signature titles to all appropriate media outlets and awards
programs and prepare special mailings
Representative Duties at University of Manitoba Press:

Under the direction of the Sales and Marketing Supervisor, the Promotions
Assistant will:
write and prepare press releases for selected books
prepare other brief promotional materials, such as invitations to book
launches
assist with the organizing of events such as book launches and book
displays, and attend selected book displays on behalf of the Press
update the Press's website as required
distribute review copies and other materials to media
maintain the Press's database of customers
Assist with shipping, filing and photocopying
Perform other related duties as assigned or required

N.B. Some evening or weekend work may be required.

Remuneration:

Signature Editions: $12.50/hr to start


University of Manitoba Press: $17.00/hr
