A Note From The Pastor

One of my favorite hymns for this season is Now Thank We All
Our God. These are the words of the first stanza:
Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done, in Whom this world rejoices;
Who from our mothers arms has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

While you may be familiar with the hymn, you may not know
its history. The words were written by Martin Rinkart, a Lutheran minister, who served in Eilenburg,
Saxony, during the Thirty Years War. The walled city of Eilenburg saw a steady stream of refugees
pour through its gates. The Swedish army surrounded the city, and famine and plague were rampant.
Eight hundred homes were destroyed, and the people began to perish. There was a tremendous strain
on the pastors who had to conduct dozens of funerals daily. Finally, many of the pastors died and
Rinkart was the only one leftdoing 50 funerals a day. When the Thirty Years War ended, and
Rinkart wrote this hymn as a testament to his faith that, after such difficult times, he was able to write a
hymn of abiding trust and gratitude toward God.
My prayer is that you will find much to be thankful for this holiday season, I know that I do. There is
lots going on from now through Christmas!
Peace,

OCTOBER 2017JOURNEYS OF PAUL CRUISE

One of my favorite scriptures comes from Pauls letter to
the Ephesians, chapter 4: Therefore, as a prisoner for
the Lord, I encourage you to live as people worthy of
the call you received from God. Conduct yourselves
with all humility, gentleness, and patience. Accept
each other with love, and make an effort to preserve
the unity of the Spirit with the peace that ties you together. You are one body and one spirit, just as God
also called you in one hope. There is one Lord, one
faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all, who
is over all, through all, and in all.
Have you ever wondered what it must have been like to
have heard that letter read aloud in the church at Ephesus?
Lenee and I want to invite you to join us in October of 2017 for the Journeys of Paul Cruise
aboard Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas. Sail roundtrip from Rome, Italy and stop in Sicily, Mykonos, Ephesus, Santorini, Athens and Corinth, Naples and Pompeii, and Ancient Rome. Guest
speaker on the cruise is Rev. Adam Hamilton, author of The Call: The Life and Message of the
Apostle Paul. There will be an informational meeting in the near future where you can get all the details on this amazing journey.
Peace ~ Jeff

Thanksgiving meals are also delivered each year to those who are homebound and to poor families in the Nacogdoches area. In order to provide the necessary amount of food, we need six volunteers who will agree to cook a
turkey and deliver it to the gym at Sacred Heart by noon on November 21, 2016. We also need volunteers who will
help deliver the meals in the afternoon (2 4 pm) on Monday, November 21. Everyone is invited to join the Community Choir which will rehearse on Sunday, November 20 at 3:00 pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. If
you would like to participate in this mission of sharing during the Thanksgiving season, please email sharon.b@fumcnac.org or call Sharon Bright in the Church Office (936) 564-8308.

UPDATE FROM SPRC

The Staff Pastor-Parrish Relations committee met in September to build a profile for the associate pastor's position vacated by Trent. The SPRC does not interview or hire pastors, but we are able to share with our District Superintendent,
Dr. Tony Vinson, some of the expectations and qualities we think would be important to support and meet the needs of
the FUMC family.
Dr. McDonald has shared this profile with Dr. Vinson who is working to fill this position and also satisfy our requests.
SPRC, with Dr. McDonald's help, identified expectations for the new associate to be able to lead and help our congregation in the areas of Missions, Discipleship, and Adult Ministries. We are looking for someone who has some experience
and maturity in these areas and who has a deep spirituality that can be shared with our church family.
We are more concerned with filling this position with the right person and realize we may have to wait to find just the right
person. Please join the SPRC in asking God to bless our church family with a perfect fit; a person who will help us fulfill
God's vision for this congregation.
Blessings,
Carolyn, SPRC Chair
