RESPONSE AND ASSESSMENT TOOLS

Name: Charis Hanson

Grade Level: 3rd
Content Area: Math
Standards Addressed: MGSE3.OA.3 Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve
word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities,
e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent
the problem.12 See Glossary: Multiplication and Division Within 100.

Technology that students will use to respond to questions/prompts:

Computer
Hand-held student response system (such as iRespond)
Tablet (such as iPad

Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)

Describe the instructional activities that will occur prior to the SRS activity and how you will
introduce the SRS activity: I will introduce multiplication word problems within 100 digits to my students
and have them become familiar with using different multiplying strategies. Some of the strategies include
the partition strategy and the number line strategy. Before using the SRS activity, I will explain to my
students how to use the hand-held clicker devices and the importance of being responsible with these
devices. Then, I will give my students an example question where they can answer the multiple-choice
questions I have created for the SRS activity.
Describe the purpose of the SRS activity (check all that apply):

Additional explanation of purpose (optional):

Type of session:

Teacher-Paced

Student-Paced

Identification of students:
Students will log-in so their individual scores will be available to you after the session
SRS activity will be anonymous
Briefly describe what will happen during the SRS activity:
The students will be given a formative assessment through the technology, iRespond. The
students will be tested on multiplication word problems and will use clickers to answer multiplechoice questions as a class on an Interactive Board. The SRS activity will assess the students prior
knowledge of multiplication as well as give them an entertaining way to learn more in-depth about
the topic. The students are given a multiple-choice question one at a time and will input their
answers, (either A, B, C, or D), into the system. I will receive the feedback from the assessment data
and make corrections to instruction or assist students one-on-one to better their understanding of
multiplication.

Provide samples of questions/prompts to be given to students:

1. Ms. Hanson has 5 shelves on her bookshelf. If there are 11 books on each shelf, how many books
does she have in total?
a. 44
b. 30
c. 50
d. 55
Right/Wrong Answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
Mixed (Some will have correct answers, others will not.)

Yes

No

Immediate corrective feedback:

Will you pre-select correct answers to some or all of the questions and display correct response to the class
after the SRS activity?
Yes
No
Why or why not? I will display the correct answers because it will assist students in learning from their
mistakes and motivating them to perform more effectively on similar problems in the future.
Use of data: The data collected from the iRespond activity will be used as a formative assessment grade in
order to monitor individual student progress and assist them in similar multiplication word problems in
future activities. The students will be shown as anonymous to one another, but I will know whom the
students are that are achieving or struggling so that I can make instructional adjustments.
Describe what will occur after the SRS activity: The students will put their iRespond clickers back in
their appropriate boxes, and I will analyze the assessment data. I will use the data to adjust curriculum
based on student performance.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. (For example: What are you trying that you have
not tried before? What do you hope to learn from this activity? How do you hope it will help students learn?
You must design something that will help you learn something new. Honor system!) : I am learning ways
in which I can use technology and fun activities to assess my students knowledge in all subject areas. I am
hoping that using the iRespond system will motivate the children to learn and also give me the opportunity
to educate my students as an entire group through technology.
