Persuasive Oral Presentation


Title of Presentation
1. Justify your topic by describing the problem that you have identified.
Topic of my persuasive presentation is Why Engineering Student Should Register with
Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). The problem is there are a lot of engineering
students and also engineers did not registered in IEM which unable them to practice
engineering in Malaysia. Therefore, after my presentation, my audience will be provided
with useful information about IEM, thus solves the problem.

Audience
1. How did you determine the knowledge level / stand/ viewpoint of your

audience?
To determine the knowledge of my audience, I did an online survey and spread it to my
audience to Facebook and Google Mail. Besides that, I also seek testimonial from the
Ex-President of IEM UTP SS, Mr.Nasrullah and also from President of YES Perak
Engr.Chow Kok Sun.

2. How did this information influence your presentation?


This information developed my presentation. Helped me in organizing my presentation
and developed my ideas and body points.

3. How do you plan to gain the audiences attention?


In order to sustain audiences attention, I will keep a constant eye contact with all of them
and ask them questions like Are you okay?, or Do you understand? every now and
then.

4. In relation to your topic, what are some ethical issues that you took into
consideration? Explain
I took into ethical issues like trustworthy and honesty in my consideration. These ethics
are vital in reporting the responses of survey, testimonial and etc.

1. Introduction

What is the purpose and importance of choosing this topic?


The purpose of this topic is to create awareness about IEM among the audience as
most of my audiences are engineering student. The importance of this topic is to
spread the benefits of IEM to the audience.

How is the topic relevant to the audience?


Some my audiences are engineering students who have to practice engineering in
Malaysia. Therefore, they have to be registered in IEM to practice engineering in
Malaysia. That is how it relates.

What is your thesis statement?


My thesis statement is corporate members who register in IEM is known as
professional engineers because they had been exposed to wider engineering network,
attending seminars and granted ENGR. Title.

How are you establishing credibility?


I am creditable to presents this topic because I am the one of the Director in IEM
UTP Student Section and I am also a student member of IEM Malaysia.

2. Body

Which organizational pattern are you using? Justify your choice


I am using the Monroes Motivated Sequence. This is because I am doing a
membership drive which needs an immediate action. This organizational pattern will
allows the audience to clearly see how the solution satisfies their needs. Once the
audience sees a clearer picture, they will share the same passion towards my solution,
which will lead to application of the desired action. In my case, the audience will
sign up for becoming a member of IEM.

2nd main point: Objective
Nowadays student or fresh graduates stuck in a life where they couldnt find a
proper job.
Some of them might turn up into a wrong path and work there for the rest of
their life.
3rd main point: Students & fresh graduates basic need
Need a good organizational support and guidance so that people can improve
their life much better without stuck in a same place.
During their life journey, people should improve their personal skills basically
their personal development in order other to look up upon and can be a good
person among the society.
As an employee, throughout their working life, they must get some world class
experience in order to improve themselves or to the company.
4th main point: Benefits of IEM.
Gain recognition for engineering experience and professional accomplishments.
Get assessed on proficiency to qualify for registration as a Professional Engineer.
Access to a wide network of fellow engineers in the private and public sectors in
Malaysia as well as regional and international engineering bodies.
Advance professional development by attending regularly organized in-house
talks, external conference and site visits. Keep abreast with engineering
development via readership of IEM Journals and Bulletins.
IEM is the organisation which protects and looks after the rights and welfare of
engineers.

engineer in their respective field. Furthermore it enables students to build
network around engineers in industry and future engineers from other
universities. As a conclusion, joining IEM is encourages for students to
improve technical and communication skills as a future engineer

He mentioned that IEM is a wonderful organization. From what I know, IEM
protects the rights and welfare of engineers. IEM host lots of technical talks
and site visit events which could enhance the knowledge and technical skills
of fellow engineers. Besides that, IEM is a professional body which allows
young engineers to develop their potential ability into success and provides
assistance in achieving professional engineer status.
6th main point: Registration
To register under, candidate should fill up the form and hand it over to IEM
personally or they can go through IEM-UTP-Student Section.
The registration fee is RM20 for a year or RM50 for 5 years.

How do you ensure that there is coherent transition from one main point to
the next main point?
I will use transitional phrases in my presentation to ensure that there is coherent
transition from one point to another point. Phrases such as first of all,
accordingly, furthermore, for example, by the way, in other words and in
conclusion will help my audiences to keep track on my points during the
presentation. Then, they can relate the points easily.

Describe how do you are going to summarise each main point.


After explaining each main point, I will restate or recap the main message I want to
deliver to the audiences on that point.

3. Conclusion
How do you plan to effectively conclude your persuasive presentation?
I will summarize the presentation by restating all the main points accordingly, step by
step, excluding all the elaboration to not confuse my audience. Besides that, I also
plan to display some testimonials I got from IEM member.

Appeal to senses: Statement, phrase


Call for action. Distribution of IEM brochure, name card, membership form and IEM
journal.

I will summarize my entire presentation by restating the main points, so that my
audience can get a rough idea about the presentation

Describe how you are going to reiterate the purpose and importance of the
whole presentation to relate it to your audience.
I will restate the aim of this presentation, then recap the main points in simple words,
give summary of sub topics and reiterate the importance of this topic. This is in line
with the 3 golden rule which is:
a) Tell them what are you going to tell them
b) Tell them
c) Tell them what you have told them

What is the use of Engr. title?
Why ICT cannot join IEM since we are labeled as Software Engineers?
Where is the IEM library?

Practice Session
1. How did you practice for your presentation?
To be honest, I practiced in an empty room in my dorm. Three days before my
presentation with a blank white wall. I did practice a lot of times till I did not keep
count.
2. Which area of your presentation needed improvement?
I needed more improvement on the delivery. I need to go in a steady pace and not too
fast so that the audiences can cope up with my points during the presentation. I had
some long pauses during the last group presentation. And I need to be more dynamic in
terms of answering questions from the audiences. Besides that, I also need to control my
nervousness and work on my intonation and emotion.

Yes, I have stayed within the time limit.
