    NewDelhi,Feb.3:
    IndianRailways,thecountryssinglelargesthighspeeddieselguzzler,hasinitiatedarelookatitsenergymixinthe
    backdropoftherecenthikeofoverRs10alitreindieselpriceforbulkusers.
    Overall,in201213,thedieselcostwentupbyoverRs15alitre,reflectinganincreaseofover33percent.

    COSTVSPRODUCTIVITY
    Followingthehike,twothirdsoftheRailwaysannualfuelbillwillgotowardspayingforhighspeeddiesel(HSD),with
    theremainingforelectricity.
    However,intermsofproductivity,thelargershareofworkisdonebyelectriclocomotives.Closeto65percentof
    freightand50percentofpassengertrafficiscarriedusingsuchlocomotives.

    Infiscal201314,theRailwaysannualfuelbillissettotouchRs24,000crore.Atthecurrentfuelprice,nextyear,
    aboutRs16,000crorewillaccruetowardspayingfordieselconsumption,saidasource.Theannualelectricitybillfor
    theentireRailwaynetworkisexpectedtobearoundRs7,500crore.Thisisinsharpcontrasttoabouttwoyearsago,
    whendieselandelectricityaccountedforhalfthefuelbilleach.

    ANALYSIS
    AteamintheBoardisworkingoutafreshcostandproductivityanalysisfordieselandelectrictraction.Apartfroma
    possibleincreaseintransportationcharges,theRailwaysisworkingoutmultiplestrategiestotideoverthesudden
    spurtindieselprice.
    Tostartwith,thereislikelytobea25percentincreaseinelectrificationworksnextyearsomethingthatmayfinda
    mentionintheforthcomingRailwayBudget.About31percentofentireRailwaysnetworkiselectrified.
    Weexpecttoclosethecurrentfiscalwithelectrificationof1,200routekm.Nextyear,wewouldliketoundertake
    electrificationof1,500routekm,saidanothersource.
    TheRailwayspaysaboutRs5.4aunitofelectricity.Moreover,inaboutayear,whentheNabinagarcaptivepowerplant
    inBiharbecomesoperational,theRailwaysexpectstoprocureelectricityatRs3.5aunit.
    However,itwillalsohavetoworkoutaparallelstrategytoincreaseavailabilityofelectriclocomotivesintheshortrun
    byprocuringmore.TheMadhepuralocomotiveplantinBihar,proposedaboutfiveyearsago,wouldhavesignificantly
    enhancedthelocoavailability,thoughthathasnowbeendelayed.
