Finding a job in Norway, studying, getting a residence permitif you have any of those dreams, you will have to
prove that your Norwegian is sucient, i.e. you will have to pass a Norwegian language exam.
Notallexamswillbeacceptedthesamepurpose.Pickingthewrongexamwillcostyoualotoftime,energy,and
moneysohereisanoverviewoverwhichexamyoushouldtakeaccordingtoyoursituation.
Whymoredifficultisbetter
Ageneralrulefirst:youshouldtaketheexamwiththehighestpossiblelevel(dependingonhowgoodyouareat
speakingNorwegian)becauseitwillopenmoredoors.Forexample:itissufficienttotakeNorskprveA2ifyou
needaresidencepermit,butyouwillalsogetaresidencepermitifyouhavepassedthe(waymoredifficult)
NorskprveB2orBergenstest.ButwithNorskprveB2orBergenstestyoucanalsostudyataNorwegian
university,whichyoucannotdoifyouhaveonlypassedNorskprveA2.
WhentotaketheNorskprve
YoumightstillhearNorskprve2andNorskprve3somewhere,buttheseexamsdonotexistanylonger.They
havebeenreplacedby
NorskprveA1/A2
NorskprveA2/B1
NorskprveB1/B2
Letmedealwiththefirsttworightaway:youshouldonlytakethemif
youhavetobecauseitisyourobligationtoattendofficialNorwegiancoursesor

IhesitaterecommendingNorskprveatanA1/A2orA2/B1levelifyoujustwanttoimproveyourchancesonthe
jobmarket.Letsfaceit:whoisimpressedbysomebasicknowledgeofNorwegian?Ifyouwanttochallenge
yourselforifyourpotentialemployerdemandsit,thentaketheexam.Butjusttakingitsothatyoucanputiton
yourCVisprobablyawasteoftime.IfyouwantagoodjobwhereNorwegianlanguagematters,youwillneedto
proveB1orB2level.
ThegoodthingabouttheNorskprveexamsisthatthereisnopass/failanylonger.Theresultoftheexamwillbe
thelevelofyourNorwegian.Forexample,ifyouregisterfortheA2/B1examandyouscorerelativelylow,youwill
getacertificatethatyourNorwegianisatlevelA2.Ifyouscorehigh,itwillsaylevelB1.
WhatdoestheNorskprvelooklike?
Thefirstpartoftheexamisdigitalized.Youwillsitinfrontofacomputerandsolvetasks.Ifyouaregood,the
computerwillpresentmoreandmoredifficulttaskstomeasureyourlevelmoreaccurately.Sothispartofthe
examisthesameforalllevels.Inthesecondpartyouwillhavetowriteatext,andinthethirdpartyouwillhaveto
talkaloneandwithanothercandidateinfrontofa(human)examiner.Forthispartyouwillhavetofindoutby
yourselfforwhichlevelyoushouldregister.Ifyouhaveateacher,askher/himforadvice.
TheNorskprveisheldtwiceayear,usuallyinJuneandDecember.

IfyourNorwegianisgood:takeNorskprveB1/B2orBergenstest?
IbelievethateverybodywhohasachievedB2levelinNorwegianshouldtaketheBergenstest.Hereiswhy:
Itistheexamwiththehighestreputationonthejobmarket(apartfromTrinn3eksamen,whichyoucanonly
takeifyouareaNorwegianuniversitystudent).MaybeNorskprvewithaB2resultwilloncegetthesame
reputation,butrightnow(November2015)BergenstestisstillthekingofNorwegianlanguageexams.
IfyouhavepassedBergenstest,youwillalsohavesufficientdocumentationforstudyingataNorwegian
university.Ifyouareapplyingforuniversitystudieswithlimitedadmission,Bergenstestencangiveyoumore
pointsandthereforeincreaseyourchancesofgettingin.Norskprvenwillalwaysgiveyoutwopoints,
whereasBergenstestencangiveyouuptosixpointsifyouscorehigh.Moreover,inconnectionwith
universitystudies,thewrittenBergenstestwilldo,whereasyouhavetopassboththewrittenandtheoral
Norskprve(Idontunderstandthelogicbehindthis,butthatsthecurrentsituation).
SoherewehaveoneofthekeydifferencesbetweenNorskprveandBergenstesten:whileNorskprveisan
integratedexam,Bergenstestenisdividedintoawrittenandanoralexamwhichyoucantakeindependentlyof
eachother.
Thereare,however,afewdisadvantageswithBergenstestenthatyoushouldtakeintoaccount:
ThewrittenBergenstestseemstobemoreacademicallychallengingyouhavethegrammarpartwhichdoes
notexistinthesameforminNorskprven(howevergoodknowledgeofgrammarisrequiredthereaswell),

andyouhavethereferat(summary)whichdoesnotexistinNorskprveneither.Theotherparts(written
production,readingcomprehension,listeningcomprehension)arefairlycomparable.
YoucantakeNorskprvenalmosteverywhereinthecountry,andinafewmunicipalitiesitischeaperthan
Bergenstesten.

Hi,
This is a very useful information, thank you.
I have passed Norskprve 3, writing and speaking in 2013. What I know about Bergenstest is that it is required
in order to study at an university and for some jobs (teachers, healthcare professionals).
I am a marketing professional and I am looking for a job in Norway. In your opinion, should I take Bergenstest
as well?
