The House on Mango Street Essay
How have you ever wondered what it would be like to be poor and living a house to be
embarrassed to call your own? In the story, The House on Mango street tells us Esperanza and
her family living through a income struggle which forces them to live in a poor house. The story
is made up of vignettes and revolves around Esperanza, her family, and her neighborhood.
Throughout the story, Esperanza tries to forget who she was, but cannot. This gives us the central
theme remember who you.
In Esperanzas life she had to move many times and eventually they had a real house to
live in. For example, In the story, Sandra Cisneros writes, We didnt always live on Mango
Street. Before that we lived on Loomis on the third floor, and before that we lived on Keeler.
Before Keeler it was Paulina, and before that I cant remember. (3) This quote tells us that by
remembering who she was back then she is able to never forgot who she was. This matters
because we can see Esperanza never forgetting about her past even if its not important.
Esperanza finds three sisters that will tell her the fate of her future. The three sisters say,
You will always be Esperanza. You will always be Mango Street. (105) This quote shows that
Esperanza will always be apart of Mango Street, even if she is not there. This evidence shows
that; Esperanza will never be able to forget about Mango Street. Generally speaking, we
wouldnt be able to imagine what Esperanzas memories would be like.

Liang 2
Additionally, Esperanza had left the others at Mango Street for her own selfishness and
plans to come back to them. In the story, Sandra Cisneros writes, They will not know I have
gone away to come back. For the ones I left behind. For the ones who cannot out. (110) This
quote shows that Esperanza will eventually reunite with her family in order to save them from
Mango Street. This matters Esperanza deeply cares about her family, even if they didnt treat her
well. By Esperanza showing resilience to help out her family we can see that her family is very
important factor to her life.
Esperanza will have to remember who she was on Mango Street. Before she went to
Mango Street, she even remembered who she was even though she didnt have to. After being
told by three sisters that she we have a house of her own, Esperanza is told that she will always
be apart of Mango Street. Even though, Esperanza has the right selfish she still feels guilt so, she
decides that she will eventually come back to Mango Street. I think, The House on Mango Street
theme can relate to the readers own life because by remembering who you are brings you back
to your most important memories. In conclusion, I recommend everyone to read The House on
Mango Street because by writing this essay it has made me learn to respect myself more.
