World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 June in more

than 100 countries. World Environment Day (WED) was established by
the United Nations General Assembly in 1972.WED is hosted every year
by a different city and commemorated with an international exposition
through the week of June 5. The United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP), also created in 1972, uses WED to stimulate
awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public
action.

How we can Celebrate the Day

World Environment Day is a peoples event with colorful activities such
as street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essays and poster
competitions in schools, tree planting as well as recycling and clean-up
campaigns.
World Environment Day is also a multi-media event, which inspires
thousands of journalists to write and report enthusiastically and critically
on the environment. It is a visual event for those who organize and
participate in seminars, roundtable meetings and symposia.
On this day, individuals, non-governmental organizations, community
and youth groups, business, industry and the media organize activities to
renew their commitments to protect and develop the environment. They
organize activities such as clean-up campaigns, tree planting, colorful
street rallies, green concerts, essay and photo competitions in schools,
and recycling efforts.

What is climate change

Climate change is any long-term change in the patterns of average
weather of a specific region or the Earth as a whole. Climate change
reflects abnormal variations to the Earth's climate and subsequent effects
on other parts of the Earth

Easy things to combat climate change

Travel light. Walk or bike instead of driving a car. Cars and trucks run
on fossil fuels, which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In the
United States, automobiles produce over 20 percent of total carbon
emissions. Walk or bike and you?ll save one pound of carbon for every
mile you travel.

Teleconference instead of flying. For office meetings, if you can

telephone or videoconference, you will save time, money, and carbon
emissions. Airplanes pump carbon emissions high into the atmosphere,
producing 12 percent of transportation sector emissions.

See the light. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. These energyefficient bulbs help fight climate change because they reduce the amount
of fossil fuels that utilities burn. You will save 100 pounds of carbon for
each incandescent bulb that you replace with a compact fluorescent, over
the life of the bulb.

Recycle and use recycled products. Products made from recycled

paper, glass, metal and plastic reduce carbon emissions because they use
less energy to manufacture than products made from completely new
materials. For instance, you'll save two pounds of carbon for every 20
glass bottles that you recycle. Recycling paper also saves trees and lets
them continue to reduce climate change naturally as they remain in the
forest, where they remove carbon from the atmosphere.

Plant native trees. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and use it
as their energy source, producing oxygen for us to breathe. A tree in the
temperate zone ? found between the tropics and the polar circles? can
remove and store 700 to 7,000 pounds of carbon over its lifetime. A tree
that shades a house can reduce the energy required to run the air
conditioner and save an additional 200 to 2,000 pounds of carbon over
its lifetime.

Turn down the heat. Heating and air conditioning draw more than half
of the energy that a home uses in the United States. Turn down the heat
or air conditioning when you leave the house or go to bed. You can
easily install a programmable thermostat that can save up money and
carbon.

Buy renewable energy. Electricity generation produces 40 percent of

carbon emissions from the United States. A growing number of utilities
generate electricity from renewable energy sources with solar panels,
windmills and other technologies. If your utility offers renewable energy,
buy it. If not, send them a message asking for clean energy.

Jainism
The origins of Jainism can be traced back to the Indus River valley civilization of
3000 B.C. Jains believe that there were 24 great teachers the last of whom was
Lord Mahavira who lived during 6th century B.C. These twenty-four teachers are
called Tirthankaras-people who had attained all knowledge while living (Moksha)
and preached it to the people. Thus, there is not one all-powerful supreme being
that controls all.
Jains believe in reincarnation. Their souls, which are believed to be a unique
substance in the universe, take different living forms in the cycle of birth, death,
and rebirth. This cycle has been going on forever, the universe has no beginning or
end, it has always been and always will be. The ultimate goal is to get rid of one's
karma on their soul so that they may end this cycle. Once this goal is reached their
soul has attained all knowledge and it rests in the heavens forever (Nirvana).
Karma theory is about actions and the results they bring to the soul's path. It is the
simply the law of cause and effect with respect to the soul.
E.G. One's actions for today will effect what will happen to them in this or their
future lives.
The way to get rid of one's karma is to follow certain rules of doing good
somewhat similar to the ten commandments. These include the principles of:
Ahimsa - To protect all life (non-violence)
Satya - To speak truth
Asteya - To not steal
Brahmacharya - To not commit adultery
Aparigraha - To limit one's possessions
Jains uphold these principles by practicing vegetarianism, non-violence in thought,
deed, and action.Jains perform their sacred rituals at the temple or Derasar. Some
of these rituals are:
Puja - Concentrating on one's soul through intense prayer sometimes in the
presence of sculptures of the teachers to serve as an example of how to attain
Moksha.
Samayik - Forty-eight minute ritual that asks for forgiveness for one's sins
Namokar Mantra - A short prayer that can be said at any time that shows obeisance
to the perfect souls that have achieved Nirvana.
The biggest event in the Jain calendar is the holy week (8-10 days) of Paryushan
where Jains reflect upon their actions throughout the past year. The week takes
place in August or September and is concluded by a three hour prayer called
Pratikraman.

About Terapanth
Terapanth is a religious sect of vtmbara Jainism. It was founded by Muni
Bhikhan(Bhikshu Swami), who later became Acharya Bhikshu. Bhikshu was
originally a member of the Sthnakavs order and was initiated by Acharya
Raghunatha. But he had differences with his guru on several aspects of religious
practices of the Sthanakvasi order and left it. On Vikram Samvat 1817 (28 June
1760) at Kelwa, a small town in Udaipur district of Rajasthan state, he founded the
new vtmbara Terapanthi order.
The Terapanthi order is strongly aniconic and has lakhs of followers in many parts
of the world.[1][2][3][4]
Bhikshu stressed 13 religious principles, namely, (i) five Mahavratas (great vows),
(ii) five samitis (regulations) and (iii) three Guptis (controls or restraints). His
order was therefore known as the Terapantha or "thirteen-panthan". He wrote his
Letter of Conduct in Rajasthani and it remains the central organising doctrine of
the Terapanthi. Bhikshu did tapasya in family house of Maniklalji Somavath in his
last breath at Siriyari Rajasthan. Somavatha family retains the place even today.
The practice of one leader regulating the entire order is a unique feature Terapanthi
Jainism. The current leader is the eleventh, Acharya Mahasharman.
The Terapantha regularly observes a festival known as Maryada
Mahotasava "Festival of Conduct". This distinctive festival is celebrated every
year on the 7th day of the bright half of the month
of Magha by ascetics and rvakas (layfolk).

About Acharyashri Bhikshu

Acharya Bhikshu (17261803) was the founder and first spiritual head of
the Svetambar Terapanth sect of Jainism.
He was a disciple of Mahavira. In the initial phase of his spiritual revolution, he
moved out from the group ofSthanakvasi Acharya Raghunath. That time he had 13
saints, 13 followers and 13 the basic rules. This coincidence results in the name of
"Terapanth" (Thirteen Path).
The various beliefs and teachings of the religious orders of those times greatly
influenced his thinking. He studied and analysed the various disciplines of the Jain
religion and on this basis he compiled his own ideologies and principles of the Jain
way of life. Based on the doctrines propagated, Acharya Bhikshu rigorously
followed the principles. It was this way of life that was demonstrated by Acharya
Bhikshu which became the foundation principle of Terapanth. The Letter of
Conduct was written by him is still followed in the same manner with due respect
with slight changes as per the time & situation. The original copy of letter written
in Rajasthani language is still available. His followers piously referred to this monk
as 'Swamiji'.
Acharya Bhikshu visualised a systematic, well established and orderly religious
sect and saw it taking shape through Terapanth. To organise and stabilise this
religious order he propagated the ideology of one guru and brought to an end the
concept of self discipleship. In this way his ideology of one Acharya, one principle,
one thought and similar thinking became the ideal for other religious sects.
Acharya Bhikshu said the common man should understand and practise true
religion which would take him to the path of salvation.
