ExxonMobil Well Control Workbook

Version 2.2 -- October, 2010

Background:
This workbook is designed to assist the rig supervisor or drilling engineer in the preparation for and
handling of a well control event. The intent is for the user to routinely update well-specific data such
as IDs, ODs and lengths when things are calm. This helps the user to deal with the well control
event when it happens instead of wasting time typing into a computer.
Instructions:
Fill in and maintain the DATA sheet. This sheet holds information concerning the well and
the rig. This tab should be updated frequently.

Data input cells are in yellow:

General Instructions:
Click on the spreadsheet tab labeled DATA. This tab is for inputting the basic drill well
information.
Well Name: Fill in the well name.
BOP Options: For surface mounted BOP stacks, click the "Surface" option button. For subsea
mounted BOP stacks, click the "Subsea" option button. Clicking these option buttons activates
(and/or de-activates) sections of the Data page that are relevant to the Surface or Subsea well
control operations (such as the riser and choke line data). This task also sets the starting depth for
the 1st line in the Casing & Hole table. Surface wells start at "0". Subsea wells start at the Choke
Line Length (i.e. the BOP stack depth).
Number of Kickoff Points or Start of Drops: Click the corresponding option button for the
appropriate number of kickoff points (KOP) and/or start of drops. This operation activates the
required KOP / EOB (end-of-build) boxes in the Deviation Data section. This operation also
determines which CALCS tab to display (which is automatic). For vertical wells, choose "0". For
standard build and hold profiles, choose "1". For standard S-turn or double build profiles, choose
"2". For multiple build and drop profiles, choose "3". Horizontal wells may use "1", "2" or "3"
depending on the number of build / drop sections.
Reset: To clear the entire spreadsheet, click on the "Reset" command button. This button resets
(clears) all input boxes (which automatically clears all calculated cells). Use this button to start a
new kill sheet from scratch.
Change Units: To change the units, click on the "Change Units" command button. Click on each
type of unit's (e.g., length, density, pressure) drop-down arrow to open the drop-down menu. Click
on the appropriate unit. Continue same process for all unit types. Then click the "OK" button. You
may mix and match any combination of units. When you change units, all values in the program
will convert automatically to the corresponding value for the new unit.
Drilling Fluid Data: Fill in the "Original Mud Weight" (OMW) box. This is the mud weight in the
hole at the time of the kick.
Formation Strength Data: Fill in the "Casing Shoe FIT Equivalent MW" box. This is the casing
shoe pressure integrity test equivalent mud weight. The "Initial Maximum Allowable Casing
Pressure" box is locked and is automatically calculated. This is the maximum allowable casing
pressure (MACP) based on the original mud weight.
Deviation Data: For each active "KOP# (kickoff point or start of drop)" box and each active
"EOB# (end of build or end of drop)" box, fill in the corresponding "MD" and "TVD". Grayed out
boxes are "not" active. If the actual well path has more than three KOPs / EOBs, then you will have
input the MD / TVD numbers that best describe the well profile in a "3" KOP system.

Mud Pump Pressure Data: Fill in the "Strokes per Minute" boxes with the appropriate SPM
values. The SPM boxes are adjacent to SPM options buttons and they are "not" locked. Fill in the
"bbl/stk" (i.e., volume/stk) box for each pump. For each pump, fill in the measured slow pump
pressures for the corresponding SPMs. If you only want to input data for one pump, then this is
OK. Click on the "Strokes per Minute" option button to choose the SPM for the pumping
operations.
Note:

Note:

Choose a pump: Click on the "Pump # running" option button for the pump that you will use.
The other two pump's slow pump pressure data will gray out.
Choose a line: Click on the "Choke" or "Choke & Kill" option button for the lines that you will use.
The other line's slow pump pressure data will gray out. For Surface wells these boxes de-activate.

Note:

Hole TD Data: Fill in the "MD", "TVD" and "Inclination" boxes for the actual well depth. The
inclination is required to calculate a true vertical height of the kick.
Drill String Data: Fill in the "MD" and "TVD" boxes for the actual depth of the drill string.
Casing Shoe Data: Fill in the "MD" and "TVD" boxes for the last casing / liner shoe depth.
Subsea Data: For Subsea wells, fill in the "Riser ID", the "Riser Length", the "Choke & Kill Line ID"
and the "Choke & Kill Line Length" boxes. For Surface wells these boxes de-activate.
Note:

Drill String (start with top item): Fill in the drill string data, working top down from the surface.
To input an item (e.g., drill pipe, HWDP or drill collar), first click on a box under "Item" and then
click on the drop-down arrow to open the "Item" menu. Choose between drill pipe, HWDP and drill
collar. It is not critical to describe the item any better than the choices listed. Proceed to fill in the
"Length", "ID" and "OD" boxes. The "Capacity", "Volume", "Strokes" and "Time" boxes are locked
and are automatically calculated.
Note:

Note:

Casing & Hole (start at top / start at BOPs): Fill in the casing and hole data (i.e.,
casing/liner/open hole top and bottom depths and ID), working top down from the BOP stack. Do
not include the riser or choke line in this table. To input an item (e.g., casing, liner or open hole),
first click on a box under "Item" and then click on the drop-down arrow to open the "Item" menu.
Choose between casing, liner and open hole. It is not critical to describe the item any better than
the choices listed. Proceed to fill in the "Top", "Bottom" depths and "ID" boxes.

Note:

Note:

This completes the DATA tab inputs.

Proceed forward through the spreadsheet by then clicking on the VOLUMES tab.
The VOLUMES tab displays the drill string and annulus volume calculations. There is no input data
required on the VOLUMES tab. All calculations are automatic.

Note:

Proceed forward through the spreadsheet by then clicking on the CALCS tab.
The CALCS tab will have a number (e.g., 0, 1, 2 or 3) and KOP next to it in parenthesis. This
information corresponds to the option button chosen in the "Number of Kickoff Points" or "Start of
Drops" section on the DATA tab.
The CALCS tab is for inputting the well kick information (i.e., SIDPP, SICP, pit gain and mud weight
being pumped). All other values and the graph are automatically calculated.
Kick Data: Fill in the "Shut-in Drill Pipe Pressure", the "Shut-in Casing Pressure" and the "Pit Gain"
boxes.
Calculated Data: All values in this section are automatically calculated except for the "Mud
Weight being Pumped (MWP)". Fill in the "Mud Weight being Pumped" box.
Note:

Maximum Allowable Casing Pressure: This value is automatically copied from the "Initial
Maximum Allowable Casing Pressure" box on the DATA tab.
This completes the CALCS tab inputs.
Proceed forward through the spreadsheet by then clicking on the MISC CALCS tab.
The MISC CALCS tab displays various calculations for items like formation pressure, kick gradient,
stripping forces, etc. Most calculations in this tab do not require any additional input.
Note:

Hydrostatic Pressure: Calculates the hydrostatic pressure based on the "Original Mud Weight" at
Hole TD.

Formation Pressure: Calculates the formation pressure based on the "Hydrostatic Pressure" plus
the "Shut-in Drill Pipe Pressure".
Balance Mud Weight: Calculates the balance mud weight based on the "Formation Pressure".
Mud to Bleed for 100 psi SICP increase (Stairstep Method): Calculates the mud volume of
"Original Mud Weight" to be bled that is equivalent to 100 psi of hydrostatic pressure at the top of
the annulus. For Subsea wells, the annulus capacity is assumed to be the choke line capacity.

Heavy Mud to Pump for 100 psi SICP decrease (Lubricate & Bleed Method): Calculates
the mud volume of "Mud Weight being Pumped" to lubricate into the hole that is equivalent to 100
psi of hydrostatic pressure at the top of the annulus. For Subsea wells, the annulus capacity is
assumed to be the choke line capacity.
Note:

Barite Required for Weight-up: Calculates the sacks of barite per unit volume (e.g., bbl)
required to weight-up from the "Original Mud Weight" to the "Mud Weight being Pumped". User
can input the actual weight of a sack of barite that they are using in the "Barite Sack Weight" box.
The spreadsheet will automatically adjust all barite sack/volume calculations for the sack weight
entered.
Note:
Sks Barite Required: Calculates the sacks of barite required to weight-up the entire mud
system. User can input the surface volume in the "Surface Volume" box. The drill string and
annulus volumes are automatically included. The open hole volume (i.e., below drill string) and
the riser volume (Subsea wells only) are not included in mud system volume calculations. You
must do these independently.
Mud Volume Increase Due to Weight-up: Calculates the mud system volume increase due to
weighting up from "Original Mud Weight" to "Mud Weight being Pumped".
Height of Influx: Calculates the annular height of the influx assuming the influx occurs at Hole
TD (i.e., on-bottom). If the drill string is at a shallower depth than the influx volume height, then
this calculated height represents the influx height in open hole.
Gradient of Mud: Calculates the gradient of the "Original Mud Weight" mud that was in the hole
at the time of the kick.
Gradient of Influx: Calculates the gradient of the influx. This calculation uses the Inclination
input in the DATA tab "Hole TD Data" to convert the "Height of Influx" into a true vertical height for
calculating the influx gradient. When the Inclination is equal to (or greater than) 90, the
"Gradient of Influx" goes to "0" since there is no height when horizontal.

Note:

Note:

Note:

Height of Gain from Stripping into Influx: Calculates the influx height increase from stripping
the drill string back to the Hole TD (i.e., continuing through and/or into the influx and back to
bottom). Assumes the drill string starts at the measured depth entered on the DATA tab in the
"Drill String Data" and is stripped back to TD. This calculated height increase is the net height
increase from stripping back to bottom.
Casing Pressure Gain from Stripping into Influx: Calculates the casing pressure increase that
occurs from stripping the drill string back to bottom as described in the above "Height of Gain from
Stripping into Influx" calculation. The height of gain used in this calculation is corrected to a true
vertical height using the inclination value input in the DATA tab Hole TD. This casing pressure gain
calculation has the same issues as the above "Gradient of Influx" calculation with regards to the
90 hole inclination and to SICP approximately equal to SIDPP (see above notes in Gradient of
Influx).
Buoyancy Factor: Calculates the buoyancy factor of the "Original Mud Weight".
NOTE: All calculations listed below this note are "rough" estimates at best. Do not assume they
are accurate as they make some assumptions that may or may not apply to your influx situation.

Annular Wellbore Force: Calculates the force (weight of drill string) required to strip into the
hole under pressure through the annular based on the "Shut-in Casing Pressure" value. User must
input the tool joint OD in the "Tool Joint OD" box and the frictional force required to strip through
the annular in the "Friction Force" box. This friction force value is a "force"; therefore, in the
English units system, lbf is pounds-force.

Ram-to-Ram Wellbore Force: Calculates the force (weight of drill string) required to strip into
the hole under pressure through the rams based on the "Shut-in Casing Pressure" value. User
must input the drill string component OD in the "Tubing OD" box and the frictional force required to
strip through the rams in the "Friction Force" box. This friction force value is a "force"; therefore, in
the English units system, lbf is pounds-force.
Air Weight of Drill String: User must input the air weight of the drilling string in this section.
This value is a "mass"; therefore, in the English units system, lbm is pounds-mass.
Buoyed Weight of Drill String (same as total effective weight): Calculates the buoyed
weight of the drill string from the "Air Weight of Drill String" based on the "Original Mud Weight".

Length of Drill Pipe to Strip into Hole Ram-to-Ram before Annular Stripping can be
Performed: Calculates the amount of drill pipe that must be stripped into the hole via ram-to-ram
before annular stripping can be performed. Calculation assumes a constant size / weight of drill
pipe. It does not include any weight for drill collars or HWDP. User must input the adjusted weight
(nominal plus tool joint) of the drill pipe being stripped into the hole in the "Adjusted
Weight/Length" box. Calculation is based on the above calculated "Annular Wellbore Force".

Length of Drill Pipe to Strip out of hole Ram-to-Ram before Snubbing Unit is Required:
Calculates the amount of pipe that can be stripped out of the hole ram-to-ram before a snubbing
unit will be required. Calculation is based on the "Air Weight of Drill String" value and assumes a
constant size / weight of drill pipe. User must input the adjusted weight (nominal plus tool joint) of
the drill pipe being stripped out of the hole in the "Adjusted Weight/Length" box.

This completes all calculations.

For Subsea wells, the above slow pump pressure values are for the
pressures measured while circulating up the riser, not the choke nor the
choke & kill line.
For Subsea wells, fill in the "Choke Line Friction Pressure" and/or the "Both
Choke & Kill" boxes for the corresponding SPM. The CLFP is the net choke
line friction pressure (i.e., the slow pump pressure to circulate up the
choke line minus the slow pump pressure to circulate up the riser)
measured prior to drilling out the casing shoe. The "Both Choke & Kill"
boxes are for using a combined choke and kill line operation when
circulating up both C&K lines. If the CLFP/C&K LFP are (by chance)
obtained in open hole, then you can use the open hole measured CLFP.
Also fill in the "Mud Weight used to obtain CLFP" box. This is needed for
calculating an adjusted CLFP/C&K LFP at the time of the kick. For Surface
wells these boxes de-activate.

You must use the 1st (top) row in the Drill String table. The "Length" for
the drill string component in this row is locked and is automatically
calculated by subtracting all other lengths in the table from the "MD"
input in the Drill String Data box.
You can leave blank rows in the Drill String table (except the 1st row) and
you can also input "0" lengths for an item. This gives you some flexibility
with the table. However, if you want to blank out a row, then you must
delete all inputs in that row, including the "Item". Just click on the box
and hit your delete key. If you use a "0" length for an item, then the
"Item", "ID" and "OD" boxes must remain filled-in.

the choke line only is being used and will display "Choke and Kill Line
Combined" if both the choke and kill lines are being used, as per the
"Choose a line" option buttons on the DATA tab. The volumes' calculations
for the "Choke and Kill Line Combined" option assumes that the choke and
kill lines are of identical ID and length such that the calculated "Choke &
Kill Line Combined" volumes are just double the values of the "Choke
Line" only option.

When "Mud Weight being Pumped" exceeds the "Calculated Balance Mud
Weight", the Drillpipe Pressure Stepdown Calculations use the "Calculated
Balance Mud Weight" as the mud weight being pumped. This is done to
ensure the drill pipe maintains a positive pressure while circulating out the
kick. Otherwise, there is potential for the drill pipe pressure values to go
"negative" (i.e., on vacuum).

The Equation's column is setup for "English Units" equations. It was very
difficult to make the information in this column change when the units
change. Therefore, we locked this column in the "English Units" system.
However, the calculated values in the "Value" column will automatically
convert to the correct value for the corresponding unit.

d height represents the influx height in open hole.

Mud: Calculates the gradient of the "Original Mud Weight" mud that was in the hole

Influx: Calculates the gradient of the influx. This calculation uses the Inclination
DATA tab "Hole TD Data" to convert the "Height of Influx" into a true vertical height for
he influx gradient. When the Inclination is equal to (or greater than) 90, the
nflux" goes to "0" since there is no height when horizontal.

Place the cursor over the hidden Comments note in the "Gradient of
Influx" cell to see gradients of typical fluids such as gas, oil and water.
If the SICP is approximately the same as the SIDPP, then this gradient of
influx equation may miscalculate the actual influx gradient. Gradient
values can go negative in this situation. If this is the case, then it may be
better to use only the SIDPP to calculate the influx gradient. The new
equation would be "Gr mud - (SIDPP / (Height of Influx * Cos
(inclination)))". An example situation where this may apply is if the entire
influx volume is contained in the open hole section below the end of the
drill string. In this case, the SIDPP should equal the SICP.

If the Hole TD is at or near horizontal (i.e. 90), then a similar SICP

approximately equal to SIDPP problem occurs with this gradient of influx
calculation. As the inclination approaches 90, the Cosine (inclination)
value approaches "0". This means that the (SICP - SIDPP) / (Height of
Influx * Cos (Inc)) term approaches infinity. If this is the case, then you
can not accurately calculate the gradient of the influx since the influx is in
the horizontal section.

ain from Stripping into Influx: Calculates the influx height increase from stripping
