Analyzing Art

How to look at and Critique a piece of Artwork or a Photograph

These questions are only a guide to help you to learn to look at art in a critical way, there are
many different ways to look at artwork and form opinions.

1.

Description (Look, Identify, Describe)


What do you see in the artwork?
What is it? (painting, photo, sculpture etc)
What is happening in this artwork?
What materials were used? (technique, painting, film photography etc)
What is the genre? (Still life, portrait, landscape etc)

2. Analyze: Formal Elements


What is the focal point of the image?
Describe the Elements and Principles of Design you see and how they were used.
(Movement, line, color, unity etc)
What colors did the artist use?
What lines, shapes or marks does the artist use?
Does this work move the viewers eye through the piece?
3. Interpretation (Figuring out meaning)
What do you think the artist is saying through this work?
How do you know that? what specific clues provide evidence?
What is the most important part of this artwork? Why?
How does this work make you feel?
What is the message of this work? how do you know?
4. Evaluation (Forming a judgement)
Is this piece of art a quality work? Why?
How does it compare to other works you may have seen?
Is this artist successful? Why?
Do you like this piece? Why or why not?
What do you dislike about this work? Why?
