Visible Light Communication (VLC)

To put it in the most simple manner, LiFi technology uses an actual LED
light bulb to establish a data communication, From your LED lighting
device, you will be able to: send data, listen music, look at videos and
ultimately to connect to Internet. It is possible to encode data in the light
by varying the rate at which the LEDs flicker on an off to give different
strings of 1s and 0s. The modulation is so fast that the human eye doesnt
notice. Please keep in mind not to get confused when one tells that light
communication, then photons do not store any sort of data, the photons
themselves do not store/carry the information inside them, but
the variations in the number of photons (flux, intensity), or
the variation in the frequency of photons can carry information. Data
from my perspective is just 0s and 1s, and these two states are most
commonly represented by voltage levels. These voltage levels can be
converted into varying light intensity or varying frequency by various
devices (the most widespread are LEDs and lasers). So, this was the way
in which the data gets encoded, now let us look at the decoding half.
There are electronic devices which convert varying light's intensity or
frequency back to varying voltage levels (the most common are
photodiodes and photovoltaic cells). Once your information is represented
by voltage levels, you're back in the usual electronics design. The quest is
to build a device that can convert the digital signals that are given out by
the USB port of a laptop or generally speaking digital signals to LIGHT.
The basic idea is to communication through light. The most beautiful
thing in this concept is that light becomes data. As a student, I must also
be curious about the way how Xender app transfers data at such a high
speed, first we had Bluetooth, which was way slower than anything. But
now the technology has evolved so much that one doesnt need to wait
for so long for a file to be transferred.
Learning straight from the paper of Harald Hass, Synergies are harnessed
as luminaries become LiFi attocells resulting in enhanced wireless
capacity providing the necessary connectivity to realise the Internet-ofThings. Now let us break this down, Synergy means the interaction or
cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to
produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects.
Harness means a set of straps and fittings by which a horse or other
draught animal is fastened to a cart, plough, etc. and is controlled by its
driver. Attocell is a femtocell for the iPhone and more. Basically, the
femtocell is a way to give you a better mobile phone signal indoors and to
allow you to route phone calls over your broadband connection rather
than the mobile network. Femtocell refers to a very small mobile phone

base station which is connected to the phone network via the Internet,
typically used in areas where the mobile signal is weak and considered to
be smaller than a picocell. LiFi could be classified as nm-wave
communication. LiFi uses light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed
wireless communication, and speeds of over 3 Gbps from a single microLED have been demonstrated using optimised direct current optical
orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) modulation.
