REVIEWS Conducting
The Local Hero Awards were presented, and the first recipient was Kathleen McGuire, serving ten years as conductor of the SF Gay Mens Chorus and raising at her podium $430,000 for Northern California charities. She has directed choruses at venues such as the Kennedy Center in Carnegie Hall, and since 2005, she has also led the Oakland based Community Womens Orchestra. She co-founded the GLAM Youth Choir and co-founded Ladies Go Biking with Dr. Betty Sullivan. She said it was great to be in the home of the annual SFGMC holiday shows. I am immensely proud of the wonderful organizations with which I work SFGMC and CWO, said McGuire. We are the pebbles that send ripples out, magnified many times to provide hope to those who do not live as freely as many of us do, she spoke regarding the Chorus activism outside of the Bay Area. San Francisco Bay Times, July 2010 The San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus rocked Davies Symphony Hall last night in a special performance that included the Mission High School Chorus joining the group on stage for a couple songs and a pair of proclamations honoring SFGMC Artistic Director Kathleen McGuire for 10 years leading the venerable singing ensemble. One proclamation, from the California Legislature, was delivered by Sen. Mark Leno, who praised both McGuires inspirational musical leadership and her amazing ability to somehow handle the 200 divas that make up SFGMC. The other proclamation, delivered by Sup. Bevan Dufty, came from Mayor Gavin Newsom and proclaimed April 22 Kathleen McGuire Day in San Francisco. Steven T. Jonas, San Francisco Bay Guardian, April 2010 The SFGMC has been cooking up a pretty sweet assortment of goodies these days. On Dec. 8, they received Outmusic's Outstanding New Choral Song award in New York City for the high-spirited song, "We Looked to the Future." The opening track on SFGMC's double-CD set Creating Harmony (featuring highlights from the Chorus' 30th Anniversary Season, 2008), it features soloist Edward "Moose" Maravilla and the Community Women's Orchestra, plus an orchestral arrangement by McGuire. This is the second Outmusic Award for SFGMC. The first, in 2005, was for their most recent holiday CD, aptly titled Home for the Holidays. In January, the chorus will follow the Courage Campaign into California's spiritually torn heartland. Their California Freedom Tour, designed to raise money for local LGBT organizations, will take them to Chico, Redding, Fresno, Bakersfield and Tracy. "Maybe we'll change some hearts and minds in the process," said McGuire. Jason Victor Serinus, Bay Area Reporter, December 17, 2009 For conductor Kathleen McGuire, conducting a work for two choirs in eight parts was simply another experience conducting orchestras. While such a serious work may not prove a favorite to ears unfamiliar with pentatonic scales, many of the chorus' other songs have a more traditional feel and, in some cases, a dash of frivolity. Jim Provenzano, Bay Area Reporter, May 15, 2008 Stunning! Stupendous! Magnificent! Triumphant! For 25 years it's been building up to this shining moment, the spectacular concert last Monday night in weather-perfect San Francisco at glittering, glowing Davies Symphony Hall, when Dr. Kathleen McGuire, deftly leading both the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and the Community Women's Orchestra, joined with Karol Vieker, conducting special Swedish guests, the Stockholms Gaykr, in "Thnk Y for the Music," a night of surpassingly gorgeous music and snappy, savvy showmanship No longer can anyone dismiss our hometown heroes as provincial. Monday's concert showcased an exciting, world-class production comprised of thousands of intricate elements all put together with finesse, spotlighting artists of the highest caliber singing, playing instruments, dancing and at times camping it up at the top of their form. Far from being a camp-fest, the concert was flush with seriousness of intent and artful execution Not only did the concert provide a glorious union of voices from different countries and cultures, it underpinned them with brass, strings, timpani, glockenspiel, woodwinds and the whole orchestral array mastered by women musicians who performed flawlessly and expressively. Mark Mardon, Bay Area Reporter, April 20, 2006
Kathleen McGuire, Page Sixteen Reviews: Conducting continued [The CD] Home for the Holidays brings together the best of the chorus' concerts from 2000-04The difference between this chorus and others is the quality of the singing and repertoire. Directed by Dr. Kathleen McGuire, whose solid conducting distinguishes every track on this joyous CD, the tracks include the obligatory Jewish and African cuts, a guest stint by the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco, some beautiful classical music by John Rutter and others, and lots of laughter. Far better than Dial-a-Prayer. Jason Victor Serinus, August 11, 2006 Then with great bravado, the men became profane monks of olde singing the praises of drinking and gambling in In taberna quando sumus from Carmina Burana, utilizing staccato, crescendo and decrescendo, and pianissimo and forte to its fullest. It was all utterly brilliant under the baton of the incomparable Kathleen McGuire. Dennis Macmillan, San Francisco Bay Times, November 20, 2004 The chorus rich, intuitive musicality is in no small measure a tribute to the skills of its artistic director, Dr. Kathleen McGuire. Four years after taking the helm, she has arrived at the point of knowing precisely how to elicit the sound shes looking for with the smallest glance or baton movement. Eric Barnes, Castro Star, May 2004 Under the beautifully balanced baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Dr. Kathleen McGuire, [the chorus] sings soaring hosannas to the heavens with grace, dignity, and exquisite harmonies the Chorus and orchestra lifted the spirits of a hugely appreciative audience and proved they are indeed a world-class musical entity My personal favorite of the night was the powerful singing on Carl Orffs medieval poem In taberna quando sumus. The piece ably demonstrated the groups consummate musicianship. Mark Mardon, Bay Area Reporter, November 26, 2003 Two outstanding choral groups have come to define the holidays for many San Franciscans: Chanticleer and the San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus both left audiences cheering in December concerts Led by musical director Dr. Kathleen McGuire, the SFGMC confers raw vocal power and musical precision in everything it performs. And the groups killer tenor section puts other choruses to shame This group knows how to work an audience. Eric Barnes, San Francisco Observer, January 2003 The seven-piece orchestra sounded full and organic under the baton of Kathleen McGuire Until the SFO starts playing casuals, Ill be getting mine at Goat Hall [Cabaret Opera]. Thomas Goss, San Francisco Classical Voice, 2002 Jerome Begin's original score [The Tempest] was played with great life by The Empyrean Ensemble under Kathleen McGuire. William Glackin, The Sacramento Bee, October 26, 2002 No Queen tribute concert would be complete without Freddie Mercurys stunning if not altogether strange operatic piece, Bohemian Rhapsody. The chorus pulls it off brilliantly, with some very nice solo work and a gorgeous string backup Thanks to Artistic Director and Conductor Kathleen McGuire, the phrasing is utterly delicious, precise, and crisp throughout. Crescendo and decrescendo is handled masterfully, offering a tapestry ranging from sweet pianissimo to raging fortissimo. Dennis Macmillan, San Francisco Bay Times, June 2002 The sound of the chorus [under McGuire] is that of one gentle, soaring voice that rolls over and embraces the listener as it touches the heart with unity, dignity, and beauty. As you listen to these many voices that join as one, all else that is insignificant fades away. Adam Sandel, Bay Area Reporter, San Francisco, December 20, 2001 Led by Dr. Kathleen McGuire, the San Franciscans achieved sublime, lovely, spine-tingling moments Jonathan Padget, Washington Metro Weekly, June 21, 2001 The guest singers [San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus conducted by McGuire] had a richer, more varied sound [than the host chorus] as they performed bittersweet love songs, as well as rhythmic and forceful selections from Orffs Carmina Burana. Alan Greenblatt, The Washington Post, June 18, 2001 McGuire is a conductor with sterling credentials, impeccable taste, and flawless musicianship. Wes Blomster, Classical Music Critic, Boulder Daily Camera, 2000

TESTIMONIALS
Conducting I want to thank you for ALL you have done in San Francisco and beyond with the San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus. Your presence in this city has been remarkable, concerts inspiring, and your fundraising efforts, unparalleled. - conductor colleague, December 2010 I have had the esteemed privilege of singing with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus under Kathleen's artistic direction and leadership. She is an amazing conductor, very intelligent and personable. She is a great teacher and mentor! She is a true philanthropist and humanitarian and I would love to work with her in the future. I truly recommend Kathleen due to her outstanding qualities both personally and professionally. - choir member, August 2010 Thank you for everything you've done over the past 10 years, and more personally, for the last seven plus years I have been in the chorus. I made friends who have become the best friends I've ever had. I believe a large reason why this has happened is because of your leadership in creating a welcoming and friendly choral environment. When I first joined, I barely knew how to read music. Over the years, I have learned so much from you musically. Thank you. I truly love to sing and I owe most of my music education to you. I have also learned how to be a better teacher from you. The way you interact with us at rehearsals is amazing. You're prepared, strict, funny, engaging, clear, and respectful. Everything a great teacher should be. Many times I have used your techniques of teaching us a song when I teach my students some concept. Your influence in my life is something I will forever cherish. I wish you the absolute best, as you deserve nothing less. - choir member, December 2010 I want you to know what a positive impact you have had on my life. Becoming a part of San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus in 2005 and working under your direction has been a truly life-changing experience. - choir member, December 2010 Kathleen, I finished reading the BAR article and my eyes welled with tears. I am so very proud of you and couldn't begin to tell you how wonderful that you are going to SOS. You truly are an inspiration and I could not think of a more talented and giving individual to head up this incredible task. I have a feeling a lot of these unfortunate people have incredible voices and we know how healing singing can be to the heart and the soul! - former choir member, December 2010 It was because of the ongoing rehearsals and vocal training that came out of my time with you that I have had some very successful roles here in the Midwest with musical theatre. I wanted to thank you because you gave the me the opportunity by auditioning me and welcoming me into the Chorus. And I always respected you as a leader. You impacted my life more than you could know. - former choir member, December 2010 I am so grateful to have had the chance to sing under Dr. Kathleen McGuire's baton for two years. Incredibly talented, deeply passionate, and just plain fun to be around. Congrats Kathleen! - former choir member, December 2010 Kathleen, I meant to come and find you after rehearsal. I had such a GREAT time last night! You're truly an inspiration. Thank you for the fun, the joy, and the amazing music-making you have brought into my life. - choir member, September 2010
