Objective

Students will learn about illustration, energy conservation, and recycling by creating a book and poster.
Students are exposed to tools and processes used in a functional art profession i.e. illustrator
Students are exposed to the reasons for recycling and energy conservation.

New Vocabulary:
Illustration: provide a book with images
Illustrator: a person that draws images for books
Energy Conservation: refers to reducing energy consumption through using less of an energy service.

Lesson 1:
1. Do Now: Illustrate the Title Page Use words and images to create a design for the cover
of your book. (Students: Drawing; Video on Illustrator; Careers in Art)
2. State the Objective
3. Think Pair Share: Why is it important to recycle? Chart Group Answers
4. Survey: If there was a trash can/recycling bin on the playground, would the
community use it instead of throwing trash on the ground?
5. Watch Video
6. Survey: How many would change their answer? Why?
7. Thumbnail Sketch of Posters: Words and Images Chart
8. Start Poster Making: Next Class
9. Exit Ticket: Complete the sentence.
Guided Practice: Students will create a list of words and images that can be used on their 3Rs
Poster. Teacher will demonstrate how to create a thumbnail sketch.
STUDIO TIME (8 min): At the end of demonstration students are dismissed for studio time.
Students will work individually at this time to begin their thumbnail sketches of a 3Rs Poster. (3Rs
Video)
CLEAN UP (2 min): At the sound of the Bell, students begin clean up. They are responsible for
putting away materials in the appropriate areas, making sure their station is clean (floor, table,
counters) and returning to the carpet.
Writing TIME (5 min): Teacher will read exit ticket question and sentence. Students will work
independently to complete exit ticket question:
