APPENDIX 2 FORM FOR ASSIGNMENT 2 (RESEARCH METHODOLOGY)

RESEARCH TITLE
FELTE students satisfaction level when studying at ULIS
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
1. What is the satisfaction level of FELTE, ULIS students toward the quality of
education of the university on average?
2. What aspects of education condition in ULIS are recommended to make
improvements as perceived by FELTE students?
RESEARCH DESIGN

In this study, the survey method will be applied firstly because it is easy to administer
and takes less time to be developed as compared to other data-collection methods.
Besides, using this method allows researchers to gather data from a large number of
respondents, being appropriate to use for the population size stated later. Also, a broad
range of information (opinions, feelings, beliefs, etc) can be conveniently collected and
analyzed.

RESEARCH SUBJECTS/PARTICIPANTS
o
o

Research participants: FELTE students of ULIS, VNU

o Subjects: Students experience and evaluation of the Faculty of English
Language Education, ULIS, VNU
o Population size: 2000
o Some basic features of the population: The population is 2000 FELTE
students from year 1 to year 4 studying at ULIS, VNU at the moment.
Experiencing university life as well as going through almost equal facultyrelated opportunities and difficulties, they are expected to provide their own
thoughts and evaluation upon their study experience at ULIS.
1

SAMPLING METHODS

200 samples out of the whole population size will be selected for these reasons:

The population of the study is 2000 students; thus, the choice of 200 out of 2000

(10%) can be considered reaching the standard.

o Cluster sampling is applied. The sample is selected randomly and each cluster is
considered to be a small population which bears the characteristics of the big
population (2000 students).
o The strategies and detail the sampling selection procedure: There are 20 classes
of FELTE students each year and each class is comprised of 25 students. The
sample is taken randomly by choosing randomly 2 classes of each university
year, so there are 8 classes chosen in total. In the survey, all these students do a
questionnaire so as to express their attitude towards ULIS.
DATA COLLECTION METHODS

o What methods will you use? Please check all that apply
Survey
Interview
Observation
Other(s)
Please specify
o Why do you choose them? How are they relevant and appropriate to your
research aims and the context of study?
As our research is on the satisfaction of FELTE students toward education
condition when studying at ULIS, we need to study a large number of students
in the department to infer a result as accurate as possible. Therefore, survey are
useful in describing the characteristics of a large population. Interview and
observation in this case seems impossible. No other research method can
provide this broad capability, which ensures a more accurate sample to gather
targeted results in which to draw conclusions and make important decisions.
o What instruments will you use? What research question(s) does each of the
instruments help collect data to answer? Please check all that apply and indicate
-

the corresponding RQ(s).

Face-to-face questionnaire

- RQ(s): 1,2

o Why do you choose to use these instruments? How will they help you to achieve
the research aims?
We use offline survey merely for our research as it is the most appropriate and
objective

method to collect data when our sample is 200 students from different

classes. Unlike online questionnaire, face to face questionnaire may certainly gain
higher response rate as well as ensure the equal rate of different attributes. It will
reduce the risk of too few people doing survey which may lead to unwanted result.
Therefore, we may have a deeper exploration in the field chosen.
o What is your fully developed instrument? Describe its features and how it was
constructed?
3

DATA ANALYSIS METHOD

o What methods will you use? Please check the method that applies and indicate
(1) the instrument(s) through which the corresponding types of data are
collected.

Quantitative Analysis Strategies Instrument: Face-to-face questionnaire

o Why do you choose to use this/these method(s)? What are the purposes?
Quantitative Analysis Strategies is chosen by the researcher to find out the satisfaction
level of FELTE students when studying in ULIS. Since the research instrument is
questionnaire and a 5-scale likert is utilized, analyzing data in quantitative strategies is
suitable to deal with numeric data and with a large number of responses.
DATA ANALYSIS PROCEDURE
o What steps will you follow to analyze data for your study?
Data from instrument 1 the face-to-face questionnaire
-

Step 1: Identify the level of measurement associated with the quantitative data:

Interval data: Data measured by a Likert scale (scale 1-5)

Nominal data: Class, Schoolyear
Step 2: Summarize gathered data into table

For example:
1
Very dissatisfied

Undecided

5
Very satisfied

Total sample: n =

1
OVERALL SATISFACTION

Count
Ratio (%)

Step 3: Caculate and record three descriptive statistics: the mean, the mode and
the median
4

Step 4: Caculate the standard deviation

Step 5: Data will be presented in graphs for comparison across different
categories and generalization.
