to determine the central ideas of the text; the key
ideas and details will allow for the students to
summarize the information in the article.
Students will be able to read and deconstruct an
informational article independently and proficiently.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.CCRA.R.10
Read and comprehend complex literary and

Timeframe: Approximately 25 minutes

2
Materials:
Weather: Air Patterns article
Highlighter
Pencil

Include book citation

Procedure:
1. Introduce lesson, explain objective

Questioning and Teaching Strategies:

1. Once I have ensured that all students have
cleared their math materials off of their desk
I will ask students to take out a highlighter
and a pencil
2. Then, with the help of my CT, we will pass
out the reading article to each student
3. I will then introduce the article to the
students, telling them we will be learning
about the different air patterns of weather
4. I will ask the students what they already
know about the weather and call on a
couple of volunteers to share their thoughts
(one student related the article to something
they had previously been learning about in
the week before)
5. I will then ask the students to follow along as
I begin to read the article - using their
highlighters and pencils to mark up the text
and search for key details and ideas

2. Demonstrate objective; reference book as needed,

provide examples of objective

6. I will then begin to read the article stopping

after each section to ensure that all students
have caught up
7. I will also ensure that I point out some of the
key details I found important during this brief
pause

3
3. Ask questions, stimulate discussion where students
also ask questions and talk about the book

4. Evaluate student understanding of the objective. Be

prepared to share your completed activity with the
whole class.

8. After I have finished reading, I will explain to

the students that we will be using
accountable talk to answer the first seven
multiple choice questions found after the
article.
9. In the students table groups of 4 I will
assign each student a number which will
designate what their intended task is for
each question; students who are number 1
will be asked to read the question aloud to
their group, student 2 will be asked to
answer the question, student 3 will be asked
to kindly agree or disagree with the answer
and explain their reasoning and student 4
will be asked to provide textual evidence for
each answer.
10.I will judge how much time to allow for the
students to complete the questions, based
on how fast each group has completed their
questions.
11.After all groups have finished answering the
seven multiple choice questions, I will read
the questions aloud and have students from
different groups share their answers with the
class and provide reasoning as to how they
came to that conclusion.
12.Once we have reviewed all seven multiple
choice questions, students will be asked to
individually answer the last 3 free response
questions.
13.The first two questions requiring a brief
answer, while the last question requires that
students provide a RAPS response.
