[OPERATION AND MAINTAINANCE MANUAL]

1. Operation
A Recommended Strategy for Operation and Control
For normal operation all power components such as ACBs, MCCBs, ELCBs and
MCBs status should be ON.
An Outline of the General Operating Mode
The operations of the complete low voltage switchboards are similar except the
controls logic (i.e.) the circuit breakers / power contactors should be ON / closed to
ensure the power supply is being fed to the downstream switchboards / equipment.
In case of motor control centers the closing / opening operation of the starters is
dependent on the BMS command if auto mode is selected.
Control Data
All starter of the MCCs can be tripped from a remote point in the Auto mode, and a
manual remote stop is also possible by means of emergency stop push button
located near the equipment.
Precautions Necessary to Overcome Known Hazards
-

Operations / maintenance works should be carried out by Authorised /

qualified personnel
Access to the switchboards should be restricted to only authorised
personnel.
Doors of the switchboards should be kept closed except during the
maintenance works.
Cable glands to be properly sealed to avoid entry of dust and vermins.
All cables should be protected by special housing, conduits and trunking
where necessary.

The Means by which any Potentially Hazardous Plant may be Made Safe
-

Caution labels to be provided to identify the hazardous areas.

Warning instructions giving clear description of the dangers involved in the
hazardous areas are to be provided.
Name of distribution boxes and cabling services should be clearly labeled.

AIR CIRCUIT BREAKERS

ACB main contacts are encased in a re-inforced polyester casing and offer double
insulation from the operators on the breaker front face.
ACBs are manual/motor operated . The operating mechanism is O-C-O stored
energy spring type. Manual spring charging handle provided on the escutcheon of
the breaker.
Status of the ACBs can be made available through the mechanical indicators.
The Breaker is to be operated through ON and OFF push buttons (built-in)
provided on the escutcheon of the breaker.
Drawout mechanism of the breaker is indicated by three different positions.
1) Connected position - All auxiliary and main circuits are engaged.
2) Test position - Auxiliary circuit is engaged & main circuit is disconnected.
3) Isolated position - All circuits are disconnected

MECHANICAL INDICATORS :
Mechanical indication on the front of the ACB is provided to indicate the following:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Main contacts closed - (ON)

Main contacts open - (OFF)
Spring charged.
Spring discharged.
Circuit breaker in Connected position
Circuit breaker in Test position
Circuit breaker in Disconnected position

TRIP UNIT :
The trip unit is solid state type , Self powered, energised by
internally mounted current transformers. It is not required any external power supply
to operate the tripping mechanism.
The trip unit has the following prime settings.
1. Short time protection ( Im):- Adjustable.
2. Instantaneous protection (I) : Adjustable.
3. Earth fault protection : Adjustable.
For other protection & settings refer the attached relevant catalogue copies.
All adjustments of protection settings are made from the front.
FAULT INDICATION :
Indicator/reset button :
Indicates that a fault trip has occurred. This will prevents re-closure of the breaker
until fault reset.
All ACBs are equipped with safety shutters in the drawout position to prevent
accidental contact with live supply. Safety shutters will be closed automatically when
the breakers are in drawout position.
MAINTANANCE :
After each break on short circuit , condition of arc chutes must be checked. Arc
chutes are removable at site to check the conditions of the arc chutes.

All connection must be tightened at least once in a year.

MOULDED CASE CIRCUIT BREAKERS

Compact MCCBs are manual operated. Operations through the operating handle
provided on the front of the panels wherever applicable. MCCBs are featured with
thermal -magnetic (Tm ) units upto 250A. Wherever for above 250A rating
Electronic trip unit provided.
MCCBs have 3 position toggles:
1. ON position ( breaker closed)
2. Tripped position, indicating that the breaker has tripped by an overload, short
circuit. In tripped condition the toggle will be in between ON and OFF position.
3. OFF position indicating, as for the tripped, that the CB is open ( Main contacts
open).
Before reclosing from tripped position, the CB must first be reset by pushing the
toggle.
Push to trip:
The push to trip button ( built-in ) allow the breaker to trip from its front face which is
accessible after opening the front door. Status of the MCCBs can be observed from
the rotary handle.
The isolation and return to service of systems and equipment
-

The isolation of the power supply is possible by switching off the circuit breaker
at the switchboard level or by the switching off the local isolator or by means of
emergency push-button located near the equipment.

Resumption of power supply to the equipment / loads can be achieved by

switching ON the above mentioned devices, as applicable.

Proper measures to be taken prior to the isolation of the circuit breakers, which
are feeding various essential loads.
The Exchange of components assembly

Exchange of components possible

MCCBs / ACBs within the same frame size/rating.
Starter modules within the same module size/rating.

Dealing with hazards which may arise during maintenance

-

WARNING: Trouble shooting of components requires opening of the control gear

compartments with the power connected to the devices. Take full care when
working on the live switchboards.
CAUTION: In order to avoid the improper termination of control wires, the control
wires to be properly labeled. Switchboard to be checked for its original operation
after the maintenance works.
The Nature of deterioration and the defects to be looked for

Deterioration of electrical contacts and connections can be observed as a result

of deposition of foreign particles and / or break down / oxidation of metallic parts.

Deterioration of electrical system wiring can be observed as a result of damages

on wires, break down of the wire insulation and melting of wires.
