Unit Title: Introduction to Statistics

Name: Thuy Tran

Content Area: Mathematics

Grade Level: 10, 11,12

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

11.0 Students compute the variance and the standard deviation of a distribution of data.
14.0 Students organize and describe distributions of data by using a number of different methods, including frequency
tables, histograms, standard line graphs and bar graphs, stem-and-leaf displays, scatterplots, and box-and-whisker
plots.
16.0 Students know basic facts concerning the relation between the mean and the standard deviation of a sampling
distribution and the mean and the standard deviation of the population distribution.
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

How to make a histogram and what to calculate if a data is given?

How many types of correlation and how they are identified?

How the population and the sample standard deviation designation matters?

Unit Summary:

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the subject of statistics as a science of data. There is data abound in this information age; how
to extract useful knowledge and gain a sound understanding in complex data sets has been more of a challenge. In this course, students will focus on
the fundamentals of statistics, which may be broadly described as the techniques to collect, clarify, summarize, organize, analyze, and interpret
numerical information.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:

brainstorming how to interpret a

data with box plot?

Formative:

Quiz: properties of distributions

from boxplots.

Flashcard: elements to create a

boxplot

matching: extract information

about the spread of data from the
boxplot

questioning: analyzation from a

graph.

Summative:

infographic: the strengths and

weaknesses of the box plot and dot
plot.
exam: how much do you understand
from the lecture?
presentation: how to move the fewest
points in the box plot to create an
outlier.
