PURPOSE: To inform
SPECIFIC PURPOSE: To inform my audience about how the most popular softdrink in the world
once had cocaine as it's main ingridient
Thesis: Coca-cola, the world-famous soft drink, originally containing cocaine.
I. Introduction.
GREETINGS
Hey, how's it going? My name's Isaias Banawa and this is my partner
John Cris Alejo.
ATTENTION GETTER
Coca-cola. It's tasty, it's refreshing. It gives you that sugary rush. But did you
know that the aptly named coke used to deliver an even bigger kick? Until
1903 the world-famous soft drink contained a significant dose of cocaine.
REASON TO LISTEN
Coca-Cola is known world-wide and has been, and still is, popular of its
refreshing taste. How this drink once had cocaine or if it still have until today
is what we're going to discuss to you about.
CREDIBILITY STATEMENT
We have searched many sites like google, wikipedia, and all other sites for
the credibility that Coca-cola did in fact contain cocain originally.
PREVIEW OF MAIN POINTS
First, we will discuss about what coca-cola is.
Second, we will discuss about what cocaine is.
Third, we will discuss about how cocaine became coca-cola's original
ingridient.
Finally, we will discuss how they removed cocaine as an ingridient.
II BODY
A.Coca-Cola is a carbonated soft drink produced by The Coca-Cola Company
1.It is a world-wide known beverage dating back at a time of war.
a.It was first created in 1886 by Atlanta pharmacist Dr. John Pemberton.

b.Originally, it was intended as a patent medicine.

c.Coca-Cola was bought out by businessman Asa Griggs Candler, whose
marketing tactics led Coke to its dominance of the world soft-drink market
throughout the 20th century.
TRANSITION
Now that we've discussed what Coca-cola is, we will now discuss what
cocaine is.
A.Cocaine is an addictive drug derived from coca or prepared synthetically,
used as an illegal stimulant and sometimes medicinally as a local anesthetic.
1.Cocaine was first isolated (extracted from coca leaves) in 1859 by German
chemist Albert Niemann.
a.It was not until the 1880s that it started to be popularized in the medical
community.
b.Cocaine was not made illegal in the Unites States until 1914, and until
then, the substance had a variety of medical uses.
2.Cocaine, also known as coke, is a strong stimulant mostly used as a
recreational drug.
a.Cocaine tonics, powders and pills were popularly believed to cure a variety
of ailments, from headache and fatigue to constipation, nausea, asthma and
impotence.
b.It is commonly snorted, inhaled, or injected into the veins.
TRANSITION
Now that we have discussed what cocaine is, we will now discuss about how
it became an ingridient.
A.Dr. John Pemberton modeled his beverage after a then-popular French
refreshment, coca wine.
1.Coca wine is made by mixing coca-leaf extract(the raw material for the
manufacture of the drug cocaine) and bordeaux wine.
b.To avoid liquor regulations, Pemberton chose to mix his coca-leaf extract
with sugar syrup instead of wine.
c.He also added kola-nut extract, lending Coca-cola the second name of its
name, as well as an extra jolt of caffeine.
TRANSITION

That my friends is how cocaine became an ingridient to coca-cola, and now

we'll talk about how they removed it.
A.By 1903, the tide of public opinion had turned against the widely used and
abused narcotic.
1.This leads the Coca-Cola company's then then-manager, Asa Griggs
Candler, to remove nearly
all cocaine from the company's beverages.
a.But coke wouldn't become completely cocaine-free until 1929, When
scientists perfected the
process of removing all psychoactive elements from coca-leaf extract.
2.While the modern-day recipe for Coca-Cola is a highly prized company
secret, there is reason
to believe that the beverage still contains the same non-narcotic coca-leaf
extract that it did in
1929.
a.According to The New York Times, the Coca-Cola Company was continuing
to import coca
leaves from Peru and Bolivia until at least the late 1980s.
III CONCLUSION
A.Review of main points:
1.Today we first discussed what coca-cola is.
2.Second, we discussed what cocaine is.
3.Third, we discussed how cocaine became coca-cola's original ingredient.
4.Finally, we discussed how they removed cocaine as an ingredient.
B.Restate Thesis
Coca-cola, the world-famous soft drink, originally contained cocaine.
C.Closure
In conclusion, we now know that it did contain contain cocaine originally and
that they have perfectedly removed all psychoactive elements from coca-leaf
extract. But does Coca-Cola still use cocaine as an ingridient? There is reason
to believe, yes, but until further evidences are found we may yet to know if
they are still using cocaine.
