Small Group Activity in Biochemistry

BGD on WATER- STUDENTS GUIDE
Name:__________________________________
DATE:__________________________
Section______
A. Learning Objectives:
At the end of the sessions the medical student should be able to
1. Compare and differentiate the water content of all the affected individuals according to sex, weight and age
2. Differentiate the body compartments according to the cations involved.
3. Predict and explain the movement of water using the different replacements given to different individuals
in the case.
4. Compute for the total body water, ECF and ICF Compartments and the osmolality of the different
individuals
B.

ACTIVITY: SMALL GROUP DISCUSSIONS

1.
2.
3.
4.

Divide the class into Small Groups- will be posted in the biochem bulletin board
Cases will be provided 1 week before the activity ( check bulletin board/ e portals for the cases)
To answer all the tasks assigned for each group
To participate in the SGD

C. TASKS
1. Differentiate the water content of the individuals in the case
2. Give the 2 main compartments of the body and compare and contrast the cations involved and their role in
the body
3. Explain the movement of water after the intake of the different type of fluids.
4. Compute the total body water, ICF and ICF
5. Solve for the serum osmolality

CASE 1 SECTION A
A family went to a party and when they reached home all of them had several episodes of vomiting followed by
diarrhea. The father drank distilled water. The mother drank ORS and the child was hooked to IVF and still
vigorously drank ORS. It was only the mother who recovered.
Guide Questions:
1. Differentiate the water content of all the affected individuals according to sex, weight and age?
2. Differentiate the different compartments according to the cations involved.
3. Explain the movement of water as the different replacements were given to 3 individuals in the case. A) the
father b) mother c) child
4. Compute for the total body water, ECF and ICF Compartments and the osmolality of the different
individuals: with the ff. data POST INTAKE of different fluids.

Na: 155 meq/l
K: 3.6
GLU: 103 mg/dl
BUN: 8 MG/DL

CASE 2 : SECTION B
A group of youngsters went to a rave concert at MOA, due to the sweltering heat and the vigorous dancing, the
3 youngsters drank the following:
Youngster 1: Gino, male athlete, 25 y/o lean male 45 kg : drank distilled absolute water
Youngster 2: Stella, obese female, 18 y/o,female: 80 kg , drank : ORS
Youngster 3: Chino , male, thin, 20 y /o male : 30 k: drank sugary ice Tea
GINO

Na: 135meq/l
K: 3.5
Glu104 mg/dl
BUN: 4 mg/dl

Chino
30kg
Na: 155 meq/l
K: 3.6
GLU: 103 mg/dl
BUN: 8 MG/DL

Guide Questions:
1. Differentiate the water content of all the affected individuals according to sex, weight and age?
2. Differentiate the different compartments according to the cations involved.
3. Explain the movement of water as the different replacements were given to 3 individuals in the case.
A)GINO b) STELLA c) CHINO
4. Compute for the total body water, ECF and ICF Compartments and the osmolality of the different
individuals: with the ff. data POST INTAKE of different fluids.

CASE 3: SECTION C
A family went on swimming at Puerto Galera. The father went swimming at the beach and nearly drowned. His
kid went to the swimming pool and nearly drowned too.
FATHER
50 kg
Na 155
K: 3.6
Glu 103
BUN :8 mg/dl

SON

BUN: 10 mg/dl

Guide Questions:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Differentiate the water content of all the affected individuals according to sex, weight and age?
Differentiate the different compartments according to the cations involved.
Explain the movement of water in this 2 situations of near drowning in sea water and in fresh water
Compute for the total body water, ECF and ICF Compartments and the osmolality of the different
individuals: with the ff. data POST INTAKE of different fluids.
