Running for RefugeesFamily Event and Race to Benefit Local and International Refugees
Draper, Utah, August 2, 2016 Local charity event, Running4Refugees, will take place on Friday,
September 9, 2016, at the Draper City Park (12500 South 1300 East) in Draper, Utah.
According to United Nations, over 43 million people worldwide are now forcibly displaced as a result of
conflict and persecution . . . More than 15 million of the uprooted are refugees who fled their home
countries, while another 27 million are people who remain displaced by conflict within their own
homelandsso-called internally displaced people. Statistically, about 50 percent of the worlds refugees
are women, and about 41 percent are children.
Here in Utah, the number of refugees working to build new lives and integrate into their communities is up
around 60,000, according to Gerald Brown, Director of the Refugee Services Office at Utahs Department
of Workforce Services. Running4Refugees will raise funds dedicated to assisting both international and
local refugees.
This family-friendly event begins at 5:00 P.M. with food vendors, a silent auction, and a marketplace where
local refugees will be selling their goods. 5K and 1K races will begin at 6:30PM and 7:30PM, respectively.
Proceeds from the silent auction and race registration will go to the AMAR International Charitable
Foundationa 501(c)(3) non-for-profit organization. AMARs role is to create sustainable systems that
help rebuild the lives of underserved populations and internally displaced refugees in the Middle East by
delivering services like public health and education to those populations. Proceeds from the food vendors
and marketplace will directly benefit refugees here in Utah.
Donations for local refugees will also be accepted at any Towne Storage location or at the event itself.
Particularly needed items include bicycles and winter coats, hats, etc. Representatives from local refugee
centersincluding Utah Refugee Center, International Rescue Committee, Refugee Action Network, and
Spice Kitchen Incubatorwill be available at the event in order to share more information and direct
interested parties towards further volunteering and involvement opportunities.
