WCMS Proposed Budget 2016-2018

Ware County Middle School (WCMS) has a school population of approximately 850
students every year. The state allotted funds for WCMS Media Center for the 2016-2017 school
year is $11,068.13. This budget may fluctuate slightly depending upon the Full-Time Equivalent
(FTE) data based on the schools population. Mrs. Sheri Wendell, Ware County Middle School
Media Specialist, says this budget has been fairly consistent for the last five years. All of the
allotted funds for the Media Center are used for the Media Center and not applied to anything
else within the school. All media center purchases are assigned a budgetary code that help
organize purchases and inventory Mrs. Windell uses money from fines and fundraisers to
support reading celebrations held at the end of the year. Monies from Education- Special
Options Local Sales Tax,(E-SPLOST) cover the cost of computers and other technology related
materials used in the Media Center. Mrs. Windell has very little input on purchasing or planning
of computers, Ipad Carts, and ChromeBook Carts used or stored in the Media Center.
The media committee, which consists of Mrs. Windell, School Principal Dr. Darlene
Tanner, and Instructional Coach, Zena Lloyd, decide how to allocate the Media Centers budget.
Teacher requests and English Language Art Common Core Standard requirements determine
which books and materials are purchased every year. The Accelerated Reader (AR) program and
increasing Lexile levels of all students is mandatory in Ware County, the WCSD pays for the
Accelerated Reading program and provides sets of books based on Lexile levels for the Media
Center that are not part of the WCMS Media Center budget. Title 1 funds pay for Study Island, a
web-based, data driven assessment program that is managed by the Mrs. Wendell. Teachers are

encouraged to use Study Island in the computer lab located in the Media Center. Wendell also
manages the AR program and encourages students to read within their Lexile Levels.
