Connecting to the Internet via Modem for Windows ME

To access the Internet with a modem, you must use


PPP. PPP stands for Point-to-Point Protocol. It is a
means of providing Internet connectivity, including
access to E-mail, FTP, Telnet, and the World Wide
Web, via modem connections.

What You Will Need


An IBM-compatible PC running Windows ME
and a 14.4Kbps or faster modem.
The Windows ME CD-ROM that came with your
computer installed in your computer.
A USC computer account on a host whose
accounts are managed by ISD (e.g. scf, rcf, hsc,
and select departmental machines). More
information on computer accounts can be found
online (http://www.usc.edu/isd/services/accounts).

Click on the Networking tab.


Verify that Enable software compression and
TCP/IP are checked.
Click on the TCP/IP Settings... button.
Verify that Server assigned IP address and
Server assigned name server addresses are
selected.
Verify that Use IP header compression and Use
default gateway on remote network are checked.
Click on OK to close the TCP/IP Settings
window.
Click on OK to close the USC PPP window.

Disabling Call Waiting


If you have call waiting and wish to disable it:

Double-click on the USC PPP icon in the Dial-Up


Networking window.

To use the PPP software that is included with


Windows ME, you must first create a connection.

Click on the Dial Properties... button.

Click on the Start Menu, select Settings, and


click on Control Panel.
Double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
If this is your first time setting up Dial-Up
Networking, the Location Information window
will appear. Enter your area code and click on the
Close button.
Double-click on Make New Connection.
You will be asked to Type a name for the
computer are you dialing. Enter USC PPP, and
click on Next.
In the Area code field, enter 213.
In the Telephone number field, enter 743-2222.

Click on Next.
Click on Finish to return to the Dial-Up
Networking window.
Right-click on the USC PPP icon and select
Properties.

Check the option labelled To disable call waiting,


dial: and enter the appropriate prefix. If you have
Pacific Bell service, enter *40. If you are oncampus, enter *70. Otherwise, enter the prefix
given by your telephone service.
Click on OK to close the Dialing Properties
window.

Connecting to USC
Follow the steps below to make a connection to USC.
In the Dial-Up Networking window, double-click
on the USC PPP icon. The Connect To window
will appear.
Enter your USC username in the User name field,
and enter your password in the Password field.
Click on the Connect button.
Windows ME will complete the connection and
display an icon in the System Tray. You are now ready
to run any Internet applications, such as Internet
Explorer or Outlook Express, that are installed on
your computer.

Disconnecting from USC


When you are finished, remember to disconnect the
PPP connection.
In the Dial-Up Networking window, double-click
on USC PPP.
Click on the Disconnect button.
Note:

The system will automatically disconnect your


connection if it is idle for 15 minutes.
