Instructions:
Write an Exploration Proposal
An exploration proposal is at least two typed pages in length, explaining exactly what you intend to explore
during Unit 3.

The exploration proposal may be presented as en extended statement, short paragraphs, dot points and may
include illustrations or diagrams as a means of clarification. It must however, be prepared prior to the
commencement of the design process. The design process is how you plan, experiment and create your artwork
directions.

Prepare a personal and creative exploration proposal that plans the content (theme) and parameters of the design
process, it will explain how you plan to create your folio of work. You must also include a fifteen week timeline
that includes the next mid-term holidays. Be realistic in your expectations and in your timeframe. Define your
areas of exploration and your theme in enough detail to allow for substantial experimentation in both media and
technique to make possible the development of a range of potential solutions for Unit 4s major artworks.

A potential solution is a sustained experiment that you are happy with, but isnt refined, finished or to the correct
scale. In your visual diary you are expected to document all of your experiments, research a range of techniques in
your media, explore ideas is as many directions as you can. From both your visual diary and your artwork
directions, it is expected that you will select at least six well developed pieces of work that have the potential to be
further developed in Unit 4 and resolved as finished artworks.

The Studio Arts Exploration Proposal is the basis of your entire Unit 3 Folio assessment. You may not begin any art
making until it is complete. The assessment of each key criteria of your folio is based on whether you have
followed your intentions as written in your proposal. It is an important document and will require a minimum of
four drafts if you seek to achieve Very High 9-10 (A+).

The Exploration Proposal should include:
- An introduction discuss the focus of your folio. The chosen theme and the subject matter need to be
written about in detail. Explain the ideas you want to explore. Explain the personal significance of your
focus (it needs to mean something to you passion & authentic).
- A discussion on the conceptual possibilities (you should have more than one)
- A timeline for your design process. Unit 3 is expected to take 15 weeks.
- A discussion of the sources of inspiration to be investigated. There should be a minimum of THREE artists.
The aim is to have professional artists who work in the media you wish to work in or pursue similar theme
that interest you.
- An explanation of the aesthetic qualities you wish to achieve. What kind of mood do you wish to convey
and how will you explore the formal qualities of the work to convey this? (Discuss the Elements and the
Principles here.)
- An explanation of the techniques to be developed. If you are going to be exploring photography you need
to consider whether you will explore analogue, digital imaging, photo-manipulation, collage,
photomontage...) You will need to research to see what other artists are doing to explore their media.

Assessment Criteria
The extent to which the Exploration Proposal demonstrates:

Very High 9-10 (A+)
A personal and comprehensively defined, highly detailed and articulate exploration proposal and plan that demonstrates how the individual design process
will be developed. The focus and subject matter to be explored are clearly defined and detailed and provide insight into the sources of motivation and
inspiration to be investigated. Perceptive and thoughtful discussion of conceptual possibilities relevant to the subject matter and art forms and a range of
related ideas to be investigated. Highly sophisticated use of art language and comprehensive explanation of the aesthetic qualities to be explored and
developed in relation to the ideas. Demonstrates thorough, detailed documentation and visual material. Comprehensive description of the art form(s),
materials, techniques and skills to be explored and developed in reference to ideas.
