Data Collection Methodology Template

I. Data Collection Plan [Chart]
Here, you will include each source of data that you plan to collect and indicate a
timeline for data collection. You will identify why you have selected this particular
source of data to collect. This table as well as descriptions of each data source will
be added to your Weebly site after peer-editing. In addition to the professional
literature as data source, you may also be collecting the following forms of data:
observations, surveys/questionnaires, interviews, focus group interviews, student
work samples or other artifacts [lesson plans, etc], audio or video observations, a
researchers journal, or other. You will have a minimum of three sources of data in
addition to your professional literature.

Data Collection Plan

Intended Learning/Purpose

Ongoing search for

and use of
professional literature
to inform my work
throughout the
semester.

Ongoing

Through the literature, I

intend to gather more
information about reading
as perceived by parents
and teachers. I plan to
learn from other
researchers approaches to
data collection and to see
how their findings may be
similar to or different than
the findings from my
study.
I intend to learn from each
school district website how
reading is encouraged
keeping in mind e reading.
What are schools currently
providing children to
develop healthy reading
habits? Is e reader being
provided?

Adaptations/Changes
made during Data
Collection Period

Parent
Surveys

Due date 9/30/2016

The purpose of the survey

is to collect
information from
parents, teachers, and
students preferred
method of reading
print or screen. Via this
survey I would also like
to find out the amount
of time a family
spends on reading and
what is the mode of
reading. Influence of
family factors on
reading habits and
interest

Did not do

I would also like to

handout a common one
page story to a target
audience on paper and
electronically and test the
comprehension ability of
students. This will give me
an insight into their
reading and
comprehending the story

Did not do

For a week I intend to find

out how much time the
family spends on reading
including the parents. Via
this family log I also intend
to find out the mode of
reading, whether the
adults spend time e
reading or paper reading.
I will be conducting an
interview with the local
school librarian to see
what her views are on the

I will I will be conducting a
conversational interview with a
group of weekend school
students and hear their
thoughts on the different
methods of reading and what
they think their inclination is

I. Data Source Descriptions [Narrative]

Description of Data Sources
In addition to the data collection plan in chart form, you will write a brief 2-4
sentence description of each source of data, when you plan to collect these data
and what you hope to learn from each data source. The sources of data in the list
below should reflect your decisions about data collection and be represented in the
chart above as well as in the narrative below. This list will be posted to Weebly
after peer-editing.
Professional Literature: Throughout the semester, I will continue to search for
articles relating to my action research topic. I plan to learn from other researchers
approaches to data collection and to see how their findings may be similar to or
different than the findings from other sources of data that I collect.

District Websites: Via District website I intend to find out how schools are
encouraging reading.
Are the schools also adapting to the changing
technologies and encouraging e reading. Are they allowing students to take home e
readers? What are the other ways through which reading is encouraged among
middle school children?
Surveys: Through the surveys, I intend to learn the teachers, parents, and
students perceptions and attitudes towards reading for leisure and learning. Each
participant will receive a paper copy and e copy of the survey to be completed by
9/30/16.
Comprehension Test: As part of the research I would handout a comprehension
passage or a short story 2 page long. I would have two groups of children Group A
and Group B. Group A will receive the story on paper and Group B will receive the
same story electronically. They will have to read the same story and answer
questions accordingly. I will compare the two groups on their comprehension and
learning. By doing this I may know who have understood the story better.

Family Log: I would request the parents and students to maintain a family log on
how much time they spent on reading and the device they used to do this. This will
help me understand the family dynamics and influence of adults on reading habits
of children.
Interview with the Local school librarian: I will be conducting an interview with
the local school librarian to see what her views are on the changing trends of
reading.
Interview with the school students: I will be conducting a conversational
interview with a group of weekend school students and hear their thoughts on the
different methods of reading and what they think their inclination is
