Unit Title: Derivative Applications

Name: Luis Ortiz

Content Area: Math / Calculus

Grade Level: 9 - 12

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

8.0 Students know and can apply Rolles Theorem, the Mean Value Theorem.
9.0 Students use differentiation to sketch, by hand, graphs of functions. They can identify maxima, minima, inflection points, and
intervals in which the function is increasing and decreasing.
11.0 Students use differentiation to solve optimization (maximum-minimum problems) in a variety of pure and applied contexts.
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Learn when to use Rolles Theorem or the Mean Value Theorem.

Learn how to use the first derivative to find the critical points of a function on the given interval.
Learn how to find the intervals where the function is increasing or decreasing and the relative or absolute extrema of a
function.
Learn how to use the second derivative to find the intervals where the function is concave up or down and how to find
inflection points.
Learn how to sketch the graph of a function.

Unit Summary:
In this unit, students will learn when to use Rolles Theorem and the Mean Value Theorem. They will discover that Rolles
Theorem is a special case of the Mean Value Theorem. The main focus of this unit will be curve sketching, which requires the use
of the derivative. In order to sketch the graph of a function student will be using their prior knowledge on finding the first and
second derivative of a function. By finding the first derivative (first derivative test) of a function, students will find the intervals
where the function is increasing/decreasing and the critical points which can be potential relative or absolute extrema. Students
will use the second derivative (Second derivative test) to find the intervals where a function is concave down or up and the
inflection points. Using the information obtain from the first and second derivative student will sketch the graph of a function.
Also, students will be able to use the derivative to solve real life problems, optimization problems. In order to achieve the goals,
students will take notes, participate in different activities during class and complete homework and assignments that will be
posted on the class website.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:

Brainstorm What is a derivative?

How many different differentiation
rules do we have?

Formative:

Flashcards - Matching graphs of

derivatives on the smart board.

Graphic Organizer Flow chart on

curve sketching.

Quiz - 10-minute quiz on

optimization.

Discussion Students will discuss

(3-5 minutes) in groups the
requirements needed to use
Rolles Theorem and the Mean
Value Theorem, and what makes
Rolles Theorem different from the
Mean Value Theorem.

Webercise - Students will

complete the webercise on Rolles
Theorem and the Mean Value
Theorem.

Summative:

Project Optimization project,

finding the maximum volume of a
box.

Test Unit test.

Lesson 1
Student Learning
Objective(s):
Learn how to use the
second derivative to
find the intervals
where the function is
concave up or down
and how to find
inflection points.

Lesson 2

Acceptable Evidence
(Assessments):
Students will be given
guided notes

Lesson Activities:

Students will use the guided notes to takes notes while we go over the
presentation on the second derivative test. In this presentation students will
know what the second derivative is and will learn how to use it through
examples on the presentation. Other terms that the students will learn are
inflection points which are the points where the function changes its concavity
and concavity.

Student Learning
Objective:
Learn how to use the
first derivative to find
the critical points of a
function on the given
interval.
Learn how to find the
intervals where the
function is increasing
or decreasing and the
relative or absolute
extrema of a function
Learn how to sketch
the graph of a
function.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will use their
prior knowledge on
derivatives to find the
first and second
derivative and use
them to fill out the
graphic organizer. In
this graphic organizer,
students will have to
sketch the graph of a
function. Which will
require them to use
the first and second
derivative to find
critical points,
inflection points,
intervals of
increasing/decreasing
and the functions
concavity.

Lesson Activities:
Students will take notes on first derivative test, which is used to find the critical
points, the intervals where the function is increasing or decreasing and the relative
or absolute extrema of the function. Also, the students will use what they learned
about second derivative test to find the functions concavity and inflection points.
There will be a think aloud on a challenging function to help the students do the
graphic organizer. Students will work in groups for 10 15 minutes on the graphic
organizer during class and it will have to be turn in the following day. Also, after
turning in the graphic organizer, students will quiz each other using the provided
flashcards.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students will
complete a webercise
in which they will
have to test if the
given functions meet
the requirements to
use Rolles Theorem
and the Mean Value
Theorem.

Lesson Activities:
There will be a short lecture on Rolles Theorem and the Mean Value Theorem.
Students will use there notes and work in groups to complete the webercise. By
doing he webercise, students will have to test if they use Rolles or the Mean Value
theorem. By doing this activity, students will note how similar Rolles theorem and
the Mean Value Theorem are.

Lesson 3
Student Learning
Objective: Learn when
to use Rolles
Theorem or the Mean
Value Theorem.
