UNIT 1
HOME AND FAMILY

Theres no place like home

~ Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz ~

Task 1.1 - Ideal houses

Three people are describing their ideal houses. Read the descriptions then share what
your ideal house looks like with your partner.
My ideal home would be a bungalow on a private island in a
tropical location such as Hawaii. I would have 3-4 bedrooms
and 2 bathrooms. I would use one room for the main
bedroom, one for a guest room, one for a work-out room,
and one for a TV/theater room. My backyard would consist
of tropical plants such as palm trees and have a space for
my helicopter to land. (In an ideal world I would have a
helicopter to fly to town for food.) The cost of this home
would be insanely high as it would be a private island.

Jim Karmic, 23
Sandra Hall, 28
I like the layout of the craftsman
cottages in my area. I think a big
lot isn't as important as a
functional house with a nice
garden in a nice neighborhood. I
definitely don't like subdivisions
and planned communities.

Andrea Simpson, 80

Country living. I prefer to live somewhere in Vermont or

New Hampshire. My ideal house would be a newly
constructed log home overlooking a valley with a huge
wrap-around porch and skylights.
It should have hardwood floors with a stone fireplace, 3
basic type bedrooms with 2 baths, and maybe one large
lower living room for a home theater. And whats more?
A hot tub outside, down a stone walkway.
The cost of my ideal land would be the downfall, as log
homes are very overpriced.

Task 1.2 - Parental influence

A Chinese-American girl writes about how her parents (especially her father)
influenced her decisions for life. Read her weblog, and then in group of 3-4 students,
discuss her questions: How influential have your parents been concerning your
education and career?

Sunday, 11 October 2009

HOW DID YOUR PARENTS INFLUENCE YOU?
When I was young, I wanted to be an astronaut, teacher, ballet dancer, violinist,
fashion designer, writer, actress, and/or model. Of course, my parents encouraged
me and said, "You can be anything you want to be!" (Except for fashion designer,
that's always been a huge no-no.)
When I started high school, I decided I wanted to be a writer, or, more lucratively
and to the delight of my parents, a plastic surgeon. (I love anatomy and physiology
and cutting things up.) By the time college application season rolled around, I had
scrapped that idea and decided that I wanted to do something in China. My father
was thrilled, BUT he said that I had to have my college education in America. ("I
came to America so that my children could have a better education than me. And
now you want to go THERE?") Doing what exactly, I had no idea, but I just wanted
to travel. Eventually I tossed that aside as well.
The one thing that hasn't change, however, is my passion for writing. Even though
my father has never said NO, he has said: " You're going to be poor and living on
the streets. I'll have to support you forever."
Encouraging? Not quite, but I'm going to go through with it. My father has wanted
me to go into business ("Well, good thing you didn't because of this recession!") and
political science. All right, essentially, he wanted me to go into things that were
going to have a "stable" and green outcome. I've felt like I've been disappointing
him multiple times, but in the end, I know my own abilities and wants. It's taken
me years to finally be able to independently choose my own path without my
father's opinion.
What about you? How influential have your parents been concerning your
education or career?

Task 1.3 Family ties

Listen to a New Zealander, an American, and an Indian (born in

England) discussing what they will do with their parents when they
get old.
Some questions to help you stay focus on their topic:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

How old are the first speakers parents?

Does he want to have his parents living with him? Why (not)?
In India where do grandparents live?
Why are old peoples homes so terrible?
What is the best solution?

In small groups, discuss to

what extend do you agree
with their best solution.

Task 1.4 Arranged marriage vs. love marriage

Which lasts longer: arranged marriage or love marriage? Such seemingly old
fashioned question still attracts the interest of many people in the world.

&
Arranged marriages built on strong solid
foundations have a greater chance for success
because commitments are based on a
combination of thought and emotion.
[] An arranged marriage isn't seeking a soul
mate or Prince Charming but partnership and
compatibility. For example, a mother seeks a
husband for her daughter; she will seek a
man who will be acceptable to her daughter
and their family. She knows her daughter's
preferences, expectations and desires. Her
maturity and wisdom will help to ensure her
daughter's emotional and practical success in
marriage.
[] In many love-marriages, the "love feeling"
ends sooner rather than later - and is often
exacerbated
by
ill-thoughts
about
compatibility choices. However, in the
arranged marriage the "love feeling" often
grows as the "love commitment" is outworked.
The marriage that the parties entered into at
the start continues for many years - getting
better and better by the year. Divorces are not
needed because compatibility was high, and
importantly, expectations of marriage were
that it would require work, commitment and
was not about personal pleasure.

A marriage is built on a very strong

foundation consisting of trust, care, and
honesty. This foundation is built when two
people have given up their love and
entrusted it in each other. Being in love
does not necessarily mean that it will
eventually result in marriage; however
when two people who are in love get
married, the marriage will last long.
Love enables a person to be completely
stripped of everything. There is no faade,
no false version of oneself. No matter what
baggage one may have the other
automatically accepts it. The beauty of love
is that all imperfections disappear. An
arranged marriage, on the other hand,
involves two people who have never met
before; who have no clue of the each others
goals, aspirations or values; and who might
not have any attraction towards each
other. They begin their lives on no
foundation.

Men make houses, women make homes.

UNIT 2
PEOPLE AND
PLACES
You can fall in love at first sight
with a place as with a person.
~Alec Waugh~

11

Task 2.1 Beauty

Beauty is in the eyes of the

beholder

People say: beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. But I think this is wrong. I
think that beauty is not in the eye of the beholder; beauty is in the standards
given by society and media for us as individuals to perceive that someone is
beautiful or not. Even though 'beauty is only skin deep,' we live in a culture
that seems to reinforce the idea that appearance is all that matters. Society
and media change our perspectives, outlooks and morals. We're told that in
order to be beautiful we need to wear the clothes, makeup and hair products
that the celebrities wear. However, we shouldn't kill ourselves to look
beautiful. We already have beauty inside us. Inner beauty can only grow
stronger if we worry more about our heart and goodness, not how our clothes,
hair or makeup looks.

By Pallavi Sinha
Discuss with your partner whether you think this proverb is true or whether there
are certain norms of beauty.

12

Task 2.2 Appearance

Interesting Opinions
University professors often give good-looking girls

better marks in exams; male students tend to

underestimate the intellectual qualities of pretty
female students.
In court cases attractive people get lighter

sentences, unless they made conscious use of their

beauty to get their own ends, in which case they
might be more severely punished.
Attractive people are seen by others

as having a better personality, higher

status, more likelihood of getting
married, and being happier.
Short men are less likely to get jobs

than tall men and they receive lower

starting salaries. In US presidential
elections, the taller candidate nearly
always wins.
(Discussion A-Z Intermediate, p9)
Personally, do you think those fun ideas from around the world are also true in
Vietnam? In small groups of 3-4 students, discuss the extent to which you agree
(disagree) with the following statements:
If youre good-looking, youre more likely to:
a. have a pleasant personality and have more friends
b. be treated more leniently if youre in the wrong
c. get a job with higher status
d. find a partner & get married

13

Task 2.3 Honesty

Work in groups of 3-4 students. Study the following situations (put a check () on the
appropriate level) and discuss the answers with members of your group.

Task 3.1 In a restaurant

Work with your partner to decide what you might say about your food or drink in a
restaurant if:
1. your food is not hot enough.
2. your vegetable is overcooked.
3. your food is not salty enough.
4. your steak is too tough.
5. your steak is undercooked.
6. your food is too spicy.
7. your coffee has too much sugar.
8. your chips have too much oil/ fat on
them.
9. your piece of meat is perfectly cooked.
10. your dish seems to have no flavors at all.

Task 3.2 - Table manners

Read the following opinions about table manners and then discuss with your
partners what is the table manner in your country/ other countries which you know
well/ in your family.

20

People should feel comfortable and relaxed when

eating - I often entertain in the kitchen and loved
eating with my fingers when I was in India.
However, it's important to teach children table
manners so that they
won't feel intimidated
when they're in certain
social situations; they do
hold cutlery in all sorts of
strange ways and elbows
are often on tables and, I
suppose, if I was being
uptight, I would say that
this shows a disrespect for
food.
Rose Elliot, vegetarian chef
I run classes on table manners for children but
parents should teach their children manners. I've
got five children so I know how difficult this can
be, but it can be done. My
children, who are now in their
20s, like going to a restaurant
and not being embarrassed
about which cutlery to use.
You can see people who don't
know
and
you
feel
embarrassed for them.

Sean Davoren, head butler at the

Lanesborough hotel and author of Manners
from Heaven

There is a difference between class-based

etiquette, which isn't so important - I don't mind
if people don't know which knife to use in a
restaurant - and courtesy, which is. I don't think
people should blow their noses in their napkins,
and talking with your
mouth full is very
unattractive,
but
common sense should
tell you that. Don't
leave the table until
everyone
else
is
finished - it's like
saying: "I'm bored
now."
Peter York,
social commentator
I'm not concerned with table manners but I do
think if you don't eat "knees under" meals with
your children, you should not be surprised if
they grow up alienated and uncivilized.
Civilization is
about
talking
and
eating
together - not
about whether
you eat peas
with your knife,
or whatever.
Prue Leith, cookery writer

Victoria Mather, social commentator

Table manners are not arcane, they are a courtesy. Eating is not an attractive
function - manners make this essential process seem a little more attractive. The
American habit of stabbing food, cutting around it, then shoveling it into your
mouth is just too ghastly for words. I definitely don't think you should speak with
your mouth full. I'm afraid to say I do sometimes put my elbows on the table but
this is fine if you're having supper with a friend and you're having a good
conversation. I wouldn't do it at Buckingham Palace.

Task 3.4 - Drinks

Use the information in the reading text below and your own knowledge to answer
the question What kind of drink do you prefer? Why?

22

you know what is the most popular and needed drink in the world? The answer is water, an essential
Doelement
needed for our existence. Over the centuries, water has been symbolized as an entity required
by all of us to stay alive and healthy. "Water is life's mater and matrix, mother and medium. There is no
life without water." Given below are some of the popular drinks enjoyed by the masses:

Mixed Drinks
Mixed drinks are usually a mixture of several drinks. You can mix fruit juice
of different flavors or blend alcoholic beverages and fruit juices. If you want to
be a bit of tipsy, then go for Blakjack. The Blakjack is a cocktail made of Jack
Daniel's and coca cola Blak. It is a blend of 1 part of Coca-Cola BlaK and 1
part of Jack Daniel's. It is served chilled in glass or over ice. An alternative
mix can be made with Coke, chilled coffee and Jack Daniel's. In Latin
American countries, this cocktail is sometimes known as Whiscola and does
not
specifically
contain
Jack
Daniel's
whiskey.

Soft Drinks
Soft Drinks usually do not contain alcohol. In general, Soft Drinks signify only
cold beverages. The term Soft Drink originally referred to carbonated drinks. Soft
drinks are manufactured by injecting carbon dioxide into the fluids at a high
pressure. Carbon dioxide mixes easily at normal atmospheric pressure, particularly
in cold beverages, but the whole process is carried out at high pressure. When the
high pressure is released the carbon dioxide comes out of solution forming
numerous bubbles and begins releasing the carbon dioxide back into the
atmosphere.
The
whole
process
is
known
as
carbonation.

Healthy Drinks
Healthy drinks are easy ways of healthy drinking.
These Healthy Drinks are actually fruit drinks loaded
with vitamins and minerals. Healthy Drinks are rich
in vitamin C and E; they elevate resistance and fight
infection. Healthy Drinks are great for snacking and
also help one stay strong and fit.

Task 5.4 - Sports and health

Read the text below and use the information in the text work in group to discuss the
relationship between sports and health. You can add some more information of your
own to make your viewpoint clear.

Why Are Sports Good for Your Health?

By Nicole Long, eHow Contributor

Making strides towards fitness by swimming.

Participation

in sports can set the groundwork for a healthy and active lifestyle.
Providing a potent motivator---competition---sports fuel your inner athlete and help
you achieve group and individual goals. Sports can impact not only your physical,
but also your mental, well-being.

Self-Esteem
1. Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD/LD, reports on MedicineNet.com that exercise
benefits and increases self-esteem. Participation in sports, which encourages
regular exercise, helps increase endorphins and boosts mood.

41

Mental Effects
2. Mental effects of exercise include reduced anxiety, stress and depression,
according to Zelman. Sports and physical activity can reduce the occurrence and
severity of these conditions.

Heart Benefits
3. Your heart depends on regular activity and participation in sports and exercise
programs to remain strong and healthy. Zelman says such exercise can lower
blood pressure and reduce your risk of stroke or heart attack.

Disease Reduction
4. Besides protecting your heart and mind, exercise can
also fight off disease. Regular participation in sports
and physical activity throughout your life reduces
your risk of more than 40 chronic conditions, such as
diabetes and osteoporosis, according to the American
College of Sports Medicine.

Reduced Weight
5. Exercise helps encourage maintenance of a healthy
weight. Daily activity through sports and fitness
programs help your body burn calories and fat.

Dance sport is not only good for physical health but also good for
spiritual health. (Anonymous)

UNIT 6
LOVE
If you would be loved, love and be lovable.
~ Benjamin Franklin ~

45

Task 6.1 What is Love?

Write whether you agree with this definition of love or not. Why or why not? Then
turn to your partner and discuss: what is love?

LOVE
Love is patient and kind. It does not envy or boast and is
not proud. It is not rude, self-seeking or easily angered; it
keeps no record of wrongs. It always protects, trusts, hopes
and perseveres. Love never fails.
1 Corinthians 13

Task 6.2 - Ideal partner

Six people are talking about the qualities they look for in an ideal partner. Which
person is most/least like you?
I like a man who
can look after me.
My ideal man has to
be athletic,
hardworking, downto-earth, reliable
and romantic.

I couldnt live with

a miserable,
narrow-minded
person. The person I
share my life with
has to be cheerful,
broad-minded and
optimistic.

Well, Im quite shy

and sensitive. So Im
usually attracted to
women who are
outgoing and selfassured.

Im looking for a
good-looking, kind,
faithful partner who
can cook really well.

I think the most

important thing is a
good sense of humor
and a kind heart.
My ideal partner is
witty, generous and
thoughtful.

My ex-partner was
big-headed,
demanding and
self-centered. So
next time Id like
someone modest,
easygoing and
considerate.

46

What qualities do you look for in your ideal partner? List the six most
important qualities. Find someone else in the class who has chosen the
same qualities.

Task 6.3 First dates

Read about these first dates. In your opinion, which relationship has the best chance
of success? Why? Tell your partner.
Twenty-first Century Dating
Joel
It was love at the first sight for Lisa and me, which was lucky because we met for the first
time on our wedding day! A radio station was running a competition called Two strangers
and a wedding, and I won the title of Most Eligible
Bachelor. Lisa was one of 300 single women who
offered to marry me! The first time we spoke to one
another was when I proposed to her on the radio
with 50,000 people listening. It wasnt exactly
intimate, but she said yes anyway. My mother was
not amused in fact, she told a newspaper that she
was shocked and appalled. But we knew we were
doing the right thing.

Kathy
Ive finally found the man of my dreams. We have so much in common. We laugh at the same
things and we talk for hours. Theres only one problem.
Weve never met. Tom lives in Canada and I live in
Scotland. We got in touch through an online dating site. In
the first week, I had about twenty-five responses, but
nobody I was particularly interested in. then, two months
ago, I received an email from this guy in Canada. He
sounded interesting, so I decided to write back. Soon I found
myself rushing back home after work to check my mails.
Tom made me laugh. He challenged my opinions. We talked
about everything, and I just knew this one was different.
Im really excited, because weve decided to meet!

47

Listen to the interviews about the relationships one year later.

Which relationship didnt work out? Why? Tell a partner about a
couple that you know well.
Choose from the list below things you want to talk about.
-

Who are they?

How do you know them?
When, where and how did they meet each other?
Did they start going out together straight away or were they just friends to
begin with?
Why do you think they were attracted to one another?
What personal qualities make them compatible?
Did their parents approve of their choice of partner?
What are they doing now?
When was the last time you saw them?

In small groups, discuss what do you think are the secrets of a successful
relationship?

48

Task 6.3 - Anything for love

Read the text (fictional). How do you feel about the man in the text?

Some people,
it seems,
would do just

anything for their loved one

Roberto Filippi, a 27-year-old Italian man, became obsessed by a girl he saw on the Milan metro.
Every day as he took the 8.23 train to the Duomon; Roberto watched his loved one from a
distance, until one day he found the courage to present her with some flowers on the return train
back to the suburbs.
She appreciated the gesture and they were soon going out together. It wasnt long before she,
Lorella, moved down, and of course Roberto had to give up his job to follow her. Then it was
election time, and Lorella managed to persuade Roberto, a lifelong communist, to vote against his
instincts, for a neo-Fascist party. Soon after that, Lorella was arrested for a suspected racial attack,
but she got Roberto to swear in court that she had in fact been with him on the night in question.
A few months later, to escape another prosecution, Lorella left for the United States, and
naturally, like a faithful dog, Roberto followed her. In American, Lorella quickly became involved
in a satanic cult. When Lorellla asked Roberto if hed be prepared to act as a human sacrifice, for
the first time in their relationship he managed to say no.

What would you do for your loved one? Would you:

-

change your religion?

give up your career?
emigrate?
tell a lie to the police to protect him/her?
give up your friends?
break ties with your family?
?

money?

56

Task 7.3 Dealing with money

Three people are talking about what they would do if they won the lottery.
If I won the lottery, the first thing that I would do is donate 10% to charity.
Obviously, I will split the 10% as many ways as I could to make a difference and
giving it to a range of different charities. I don't believe in donating to one charity
so if I had, say, 10000 to donate, I would give 1000 to 10 different charities to
make a difference to a range of people's lives.

Wow, good question! hehehe. I think I would like to know how to invest
half of the money first (Stock market perhaps?). The other half would
be to travel. Then, if I still have some money left, I would just save it for
the future. You never know what could happen, and that would

give me more time to think how to use the money wisely.

If I won the lottery (which isn't likely since

I never play) I would first pay off all my
parents debt, all my debt. I would help
my friends and all my family. After that I
would invest enough money to sustain
me for a life time, keep a savings and
spending money account. Then I would
help people that had nothing. Maybe I
would start a center for homeless people
to live in, but they would have to go
57
through a program to get back on their
feet in order to live there.

What would you do if you won the lottery? Make a list of what you
would do first, second, third, and so on.

Go on outdoor adventures and

backpacking trips

Go on a vacation overseas

Buy a house

Buy a car

Buy a yacht

Give up my studies/job

Put the money in the bank

Buy presents for my friends

Eat healthy with a

cook/dietician

Learn to produce music on the

computer

Learn photography

and family

Make a donation to charity

Get in shape via a personal

trainer

In small groups, compare your lists and discuss these questions.

- What do the lists tell you each others attitude toward money?
- Can money buy happiness? Why or why not?

58

Task 7.4 Getting fun with money

Read the newspaper stories about how people got money or lose it in unusual
ways. Discuss to write in the ending to each story.
A Swiss man was amazed to see an extra 100,000 in his bank account one day. He
started spending the money immediately, organizing expensive parties for his friends
and buying things hed never been able to afford before. When the bank noticed its mistake
the money actually belonged to a much richer man with the same name he had already
spent85,000.

As he arrived at the restaurant where he planned to give his girlfriend a wonderful

surprise, Eric Culbertson checked in his pocket and realized that he had left the
$10,000 engagement ring he had just bought in a taxi! He had saved up for a year to buy the
ring.
.
The American comedian Jack Benny was famous for being mean. One day he had been
to the bank and he was on his way home, when a robber appeared and pointed a gun at
him Your money or your life, hissed the robber.
There was a long silence.
Whats the matter with you? said the robber. I said your money or your life.
.
Someone asked a millionaire how he had become so rich. As a young man, I was very
poor, he said. I spent my last $100 on an old second-hand car. I spent the next week
cleaning it and repairing it. Then I sold the car for $200. With the $200, I bought two secondhand cars. I spent the next two weeks cleaning and repairing them. Then I sold them for
$400. It wasnt much, but I had made a profit of $200.
What then?

Compare your endings and the original endings. Which do you

think is the best ending?
59

Choose one of the following sayings and develop your view of

this saying into a two-minute talk with clear structures
(introduction, body with at least two main ideas and some

"Money cant buy happiness."

The love of money is the root of all evil.

What are causes of increasing unemployment rate in our today world?

Task 8.4 Ideal jobs

Three people are describing their ideal jobs; different people may have different
ideas towards the ideal jobs. Read these descriptions and discuss to make
description of your ideal job.

66

My ideal job is to work in a very big and

famous company with a very healthy
environment. There are some reasons
why I would like to have this job. First, I
would have a good reputation. The
second reason is that I would have a
very high salary.

In my opinion, my ideal job must fully utilize my intelligence and

knowledge because I have been studying for so many years; the
main purpose is to prepare myself for my future job. If most of
my knowledge cannot be used, no doubt it is a great waste. I am
not afraid of a demanding and challenging job, for it is the best
opportunity to examine my capability. At the same time,
however, I attach much importance to the personal relationships
at work. A relaxed, harmonious relationship among the
companions is ideal, for it is bound to improve the efficiency of
work. At last, I wish my job will help people directly, thus sense
of achievement will make me work harder.

I guess its a job where you can dress up

nicely and go meet people with a similar
mind set, be respected, give time to family
and children, and dont come back
exhausted. I always set my priorities right
and look for a job that gives you job
satisfaction and helps set a balanced
routine. Different people have different
requirements; it may be money, position,
family or just passing time.

67

What are important qualities of a good employee?

Task 9.4 Tree lovers

An American girl writes about her love for trees. Read her composition and pay
special attention to the underlined words in the composition.

74

I love trees because they are an important commodity to the environment. They
make life possible on this planet, along with other plants. I also love the trees'
glorious display of colors in the fall.
I love trees because they have many different shades of green, so many that it's
almost impossible to count. When I paint a picture of a tree I use many shades of
green and many more shades of brown. My favorite thing about trees is that they
always seem to have a glow around them.
I love trees because they always smell so fresh and clean. I like to go to the nursery
because I love the smell of trees, it's so refreshing. It's a glass of cool water on a hot
day, or a damp cloth on a hot forehead.
I love to plant trees. I love to dig through the
soil to make a hole in which the tree will rest. I
love to place the tree in the ground, making
sure not to disturb the roots which will be the
tree's support. I love to water the trees. I love
to pour the water on the trees knowing that it
will grow.
One of my favorite things about trees is that
they are fun to climb. I started climbing trees
when I was very little. My dad taught me how
to climb, along with some useful tips. I
especially like to climb my grandpa's apple
tree. I love to wind through the branches, and climb to a board that has been placed
there. Once up, I like to think and relax, or bring a book up with me. It is fun to let
my imagination run away with me while munching apples.
I love trees in the autumn when they display their beautiful colors. In the autumn
time, splashes of red, yellow, orange, and green decorate the mountainside. The
maples go red, the oak and aspen go yellow while the evergreens maintain their
beautiful shade of green.
Trees make life possible because they use the carbon dioxide and release oxygen
which makes it so that we can breathe. If we exterminate trees, the effects could be
fatal. There may be global warming, lack of oxygen, and we would definitely not
have any lumber or paper. Trees are very important to the environment. The beauty

Task 10.3 A Christmas Story

We'd like to share with you a remarkable Christmas story:
one of courage, life, and love. Read the following story and
pay special attention to the underlined words in the story.

83

Twenty-five years ago, Ray Anderson, a single parent with a oneyear-old son, was returning home after running a few errands
Christmas Eve when he witnessed a horrendous accident which
took place when the driver of a truck ran a red light and collided
with the car of Sandra Jenkins. The impact of the collision killed
Sandra instantly, but her three-month-old daughter was left
trapped upside down in the burning wreckage seemingly doomed
to a fiery tomb. While others looked on in horror, Anderson
jumped out of his vehicle and crawled into the car through the shattered rear window to
try to free the infant. Seconds later, the car was totally
engulfed in flames, but Anderson was miraculously able to pull
the baby to safety. While the child came out of the accident
virtually unscathed, Anderson suffered third degree burns over
80 percent of his body. Two days later, Anderson died, but his
heroic act was published widely in the media. Anderson's son
was soon adopted by relative, and the family moved to the East
Coast.
The most remarkable part of this story unfolded only
last week. Karen and her fiancee, Aaron, were looking through some old boxes in the
attic of Karen's home when they came across some old newspapers clippings. "This is me
when I was a newborn baby. I was rescued from a burning car, but my mother died in
the accident," explained Karen. Although Aaron knew Karen's mother had died years
earlier, he never fully understood the circumstances until he started to skim over the
newspaper article. Karen continued to sort through some old books when saw Aaron
absorbed in the details of the accident. Then she noticed, to her much surprise, tears
swelling up in his eyes, and he began to cry uncontrollably. Then, in between sobs, he
went on to reveal that the man that pulled her from the flames was his own father he
never knew. The two embraced and shed many tears that afternoon, recounting stories
told to them about their parents.
What really drew their attention were some other details unknown to both of
them until that moment. According to the article, Aaron's father was on a mission of love
that fateful Christmas Eve in the process of distributing care packages to needy families
in the area. That was a yearly tradition that he performed unbeknownst to everyone
except two close friends. This he did because of his firm conviction that the best

84

Christmas gifts came not from the gift received, but from those given, and that those
acts of charity should remain anonymous. As it turns out, Karen's mother was also
involved in similar volunteer work throughout the community.
In honor of their parents and the desire to share the gift of Christmas, Aaron and
Karen have committed to carry on similar acts of kindness.
While hardship, grief, and tragedy plague our lives, the gift
of the love seems to transcend all material obstacles and
brings greater hope for those downtrodden and low in spirit.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

Put suitable underlined words in the composition in the gaps of the following
sentences
1. We keep our presents in the ______________until Christmas Eve so the kids
won't find them.
2. Over twenty people lost their lives in the ______________ accident.
3. The boat _____________with another ship in the dense fog.
4. The smoke from the fire ______________ the entire house.
5. We should show acts of _______________ to those less fortunate throughout the
year.
6. The _____________of the unknown soldier is buried on the hill over there.
7. The poor and the _______________ people will stand up to fight for their fates
8. The true facts of the case were _________after extensive interviews with
witnesses.
9. My father used to _______________ his Christmas memories when I was a child.
10. ________________ to her, they had organized a surprise party.

Task 11.3 Internet vs. Relationships

Read an extract from a periodical report of CMC
Magazine
about
the
Internets
effects
on
Relationships. Do you agree with the arguments
provided in this report and what are the Internets
effects on your own life?
"The Internet's Effects on Relationships: Detrimental or Beneficial?"
- CMC Magazine During the latter half of the 1990s, the Internet has been thrust into the
limelight because of its ability to allow information transmission to anywhere
where there's a computer and a phone line. The Internet, now a household
buzzword for a network of computers providing theoretically worldwide access
to information, has taken root in the cultures and habits of those who use it,
and past speculation of the Internet's influence as a virtual reality has
become, well, a reality. However, the popularity and instant appeal of the
Internet has caused concern that individuals will become addicted to the
Internet ("Net"), withdraw from family relationships, experience increases in
loneliness, and overall just find it impossible to reach deeper levels of intimacy
in relationships. Psychologists are increasing the intensity of their studies
regarding the Internet, finding this to be the case, while others disagree
completely. But is this truly the answer? []
It is conceded any online methods of finding information can be used purely
for constructive and healthy ends, socially, for people may find many large
circles of others who identify with them and strengthen their own confidence
in people. A journal entitled Universal Access to E-mail: Feasibility and

94

Societal Implications mentions that the Internet, e-mail in particular, allows

networks to "support interpersonal relationships and facilitate the social
integration of otherwise marginalized groups" and "facilitate citizen
participation in the political process.
However, as a study entitled "Internet Paradox: A Social Technology That
Reduces Social Involvement and Psychological Well-Being?" stated, "These
applications [e-mail, IRC chat, etc.] disproportionately reduce the costs of
communication with geographically distant acquaintances and strangers; as a
result, a smaller proportion of people's total social contacts might be with
family and close friends." []
Internet addiction has been a hot topic. The replacement of humans by
computers as interactive beings is the main concern for individuals' health.
What feeds 'Net addiction is the fact that the 'Net removes all of the social and
physical barriers to satisfying desires. For example, pornography is readily
available online, and for younger children and people with low esteem, what
had previously kept them from buying pornographic videos and magazines, or
watching pornographic movies, was embarrassment. However, while online,
anyone, any age, can download as much pornography as they wish without
fear of being identified by other people.
Nevertheless, the point is made that the 'Net loosens the restrictive nature of
society, a nature which has traditionally protected societal morality and
manners. By making any information available in the comfort of one's own
room, any pleasure or indulgence is perfectly acceptable and comfortable,
regardless of the taboo it has outside of that room.
Complementing the alluring addictive aspect of the 'Net is the decline of
communication amongst social circles in general as democratic
oversimplification gradually nullifies the credibility and usefulness of religion
and faith, and the growing suspicion towards other humans as violent crimes
and cases of mistrust in close relationships such as friend-to-friend and loverto-lover increase. [] So what is going on is that some psychologists see a link
between the disinterest in public participation in local and national affairs
and the increase of instances of Internet addiction. []

Task 12.4 Oxford Street crime

Though Oxford Street has a reputation for
pickpockets it is very unlikely that a tourist
would become a victim of crime. Here are some
common scams and tips to avoid becoming a
victim yourself.
Londoners robbed
Most people think that the majority of victims of
crime in Central London are tourists. In fact, this
is not the case. In official police crime profile
reports of incidents in Oxford Street, of 3404 victims of pickpockets, only 128 were
visitors to London.
The secret to a successful robbery
By far the biggest crime is pickpocketing; the criminals are now very professional in their
approach. The key to being a successful pickpocket, it would seem, is to distract the
victim away from what he or she is doing in order to allow the pickpocket to steal without
anyone realising a theft has taken place.
Look over here!
One pickpockets tactic was to have a woman fasten her stockings and suspenders in the
middle of a shop; this obviously attracts a lot of attention, thus allowing the thief to go
about his business. Another diversion tactic was to squirt sauce on peoples clothes, the
thief then starts to try to help while his accomplice moves in and steals the victims bag
or wallet.
The changing room
If you are trying something on in a clothes shop, be careful. One scam involved a woman
apparently buying a jacket for her husband. She asked a man to try on a jacket, saying
that he was approximately the same size as her husband, while he was doing that; her
accomplice stole the mans jacket. Customers in shoe shops often leave their bags
unattended while they go and look in the nearby mirror, a perfect opportunity for a thief.
Transport danger
If you are getting on a bus, watch out for someone who gets on the bus, then looks as if he
has changed his mind. In the confusion that follows, pushing against the people getting
onto the bus, he has the perfect opportunity to get someones bag and run away with it.

104

It leaves a bad smell

Finally, beware men with suitcases selling designer perfume for 10 a bottle. You can be
sure its cheap, nasty and short lasting. These conmen usually get the stuff for 3 a bottle
then sell it to unsuspecting passers-by.
Not as bad as it seems
Sounds like you shouldnt go out, you should stay at home and keep a hold of your wallet.
Remember there are literally thousands of shoppers on Oxford Street everyday, and only
a tiny percentage of people are victims of crime. It would be wrong to paint Londons
West End as riddled with crime but as with all major cities, just that little bit of extra
care can make all the difference.

Read the passage, then work in pairs to find out and

discuss common tactics used by pickpockets on Oxford
Street that are mentioned in the text. Have you ever
been a victim of picpokets, or ever seen such a case? Tell
it to your friend.
Alternatively, you should also be prepared to deliver a 35 minute talk to answer the questions above.

Choose one of the following sayings and develop your view of

this saying into a three-minute talk with clear structures
(introduction, body with at least two main ideas and some
supporting details, and conclusion)

Surfing From Space

No doubt these advances will give rise to new extreme
sports and new stunts for daredevils to try.
By 2050 a daredevil (or a celebrity that wants to give
her career a boost) will attempt to ride a surfboard from
space, through the atmosphere, and then fly past a
beach in California before landing on the ocean and then
surfing back to the beach. The surfboard will be made
extra-large, so the top can be climate controlled when it is high, and so as it
comes in for a landing, it can actually glide through the air.

The Nano Car From India

This July, India unveiled a prototype of a touchscreen tablet computer which
will cost only $35.00, and they hope to produce it by 2011. India also is
developing the compact $2127.00 Nano car. They will sell a car that is
customized to the customer's unique needs. So
you will buy your car piece by piece. What's the
point of buying a top if you don't need one?
Why buy sides to your car if you want a good
view? If you always drive alone, what's the
point of buying four seats? The solution is to
buy only what you need: pay a dollar for each
wheel, a dollar for the engine, a dollar for the
floor, a dollar for a seat, and away you go.
When it looks like rain, run back and buy a roof.

110

The Robotic Surgical Machine

By 2050 they will cut down on both healthcare costs
and human errors by creating robotic surgeons. The
robotic surgeon will work on demand, using perfect
information, do a perfect job, and have a perfect record.
Operations will cost far less because they will no
longer need tests, labs, or an actual surgeon. Plus,
operations will be faster because the robotic surgeon
will work with eight hands instead of two. It will be amazing. Crowds will
gather to see the show. It will be quick. Instant operations will fit well into our
busy lifestyle.

fast food restaurants, and junk food.
Our preferred activity has become sitting:
sitting in front of the TV or computer. Even
children prefer to sit rather than to play. It is not surprising that obesity and its
complications have become a major problem. As we spend more time sitting and
eating, some of us will become not much more than a blob.

In small groups, discuss what do you think are the advantages and
drawbacks of the advanced world?
In your opinion, what will our world be in 2050? Give examples and
details in your description.

Task 13.3 Are you anxious or fearful about 2012?

Read the following article about 2012 end of
the world warnings. To what extend do you
agree with the article? Why? Tell your partner.

Never

in history has there been a day been so

compelling to such large numbers of cultures,

religions, and scientists.
The Mayan calendar ends in December 21, 2012
and at the same time predicted the end of the
world. The Native Americans, Egyptians, and the I
Ching predicted the same date and year to be the end of the world. The uncanny
part of this? All of these civilizations had no contact with each other. All of them
predicted the same day and the same year that 2012 would mark the end of the
world.
The Mayans predicts that a galactic alignment which will trigger all sorts of
doomsday cataclysmic events such as pole shifts, which leads to super volcanoes
and inevitably massive earthquakes that will spawn monstrous tsunamis.
Meanwhile, the Sun is expected to shoot out enormous solar flares . In the book of
revelations, this is known as 7 days of darkness, where the entire planets power
grid is completely wiped off.
Recent and Upcoming 2012 Signs
- Economic Disasters
- Increasing Earthquakes
- USAs War on Terror
- Nuclear Threats
- Global Warming
The warnings have been presented through the sacred texts of many big and
small religions, prophecies, as well as scientific, historical and geological evidence
in the world. So even if you believe in a different religion, scientific evidence, the
fact of the matter is, 2012 is real. It is not a myth. It is based on facts, evidence,
and years of research by scientists, geologists, astronomers, etc.

As far as we know, there are a lot of threats the human civilization is facing today
such as dangerous poisoning of the environment, depletion of natural resources,
overpopulation, opposition between different countries, religious denominations
and the danger of Earth's collision with a sizable celestial object. These problems
mainly belong to different kinds of human activity, and there have been a number
of predictions about the end of the world.
In small group, discuss the question: What should you do to protect our
world?

Make your own prediction about your faculty in the next 10

years in a three to five minute talk with a clear structure
(introduction, body with at least 2 major ideas & some
supporting details and conclusion). You should use some visual
aids to make your talk more interesting.
