5. Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite
directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits,
positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world
contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation .
a . Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line;
recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., (3) = 3, and that 0 is its
own opposite.
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
Big Idea
a) Why is the Number Line important?
b) How can this Number Line help me in the real world? Make students understand that the number line is
very important in math and in the real world. That they will use it when they go shopping or when they go to
the mountain and experience change in temperature and in many other scenarios.
c) Students will use the internet to go into YouTube to watch YouTube videos about the number line
d) Students will use Quizlet to take several quizzes to check on their progress.
Unit Summary:
This unit will teach students to understand the number line with integer numbers. We will be learning about
negative and positive numbers. Then students will start to go deeper into the number line, they will be
learning about subtraction and addition in the number line. This will help students use the number line and
applied it into the real world. Students will be able to use the number line to calculate how much money they
can spend when shopping and so many more real world situations.
