Learning Styles Summary
After taking the learning styles quiz I discovered that I am a visual, applied, verbal,
social, and pragmatic learner. If I had an ELL student that was a visual learner, I would use
pictures on a regular basis while working with the student. For example, if I was teaching the
student the word ball in English, I would have an index card with a picture of a ball and then
the word ball underneath. If I was working with an applied ELL student, I would have the
student participate in learning activities where they would have to read a line and then act out the
phrase or task in a skit. When working with a verbal ELL student, I would use the repetition
method a lot. I would also have the student listen to audio books while they read along. Being a
social learner is something I find to be very important. If I was teaching an ELL student who was
a social learner, I would be sure to have the student participate in partner/group work. This way
the ELL student is provided with the experience and opportunity to work with other students on a
learning level. Lastly, when working with a pragmatic ELL student, I would always make sure
to have directions displayed clearly, particularly with step by step instruction. Every student is a
different type of learner, especially ELL students and each form of learning comes with its set of
advantages. As teachers we need to keep all learning styles in mind when working with students
on a day to day basis.
