TOPIC/FOCUS: The role of a Conservator in a gallery- Conservation & preservation of different artworks.

Opening
Does anyone know what a Conservator
does in a gallery?
Today we will learn about the role of a
Conservator, what they are
responsible for in a gallery, and the
processes associated with the
presentation and conservation of
artworks.
We will also learn about the methods
used by and considerations of artists
and curators working in galleries in
conservation of artworks, including
lighting, temperature, storage,
transportation and presentation of
artworks.

We will be playing a game of 'BINGO',


you have your BINGO sheet in front of
you, you may turn it over now.

Students open
notebook/visual
diary.

Whilst we go through the PowerPoint,


all of the information you need to fill
out the BINGO squares will be
included. You will need to pay close
attention to the PowerPoint so that you
have a chance of winning! We will go
through the BINGO sheet after the
PowerPoint so that you can fill in any
empty squares. There is a prize!!
(chocolate bar)When you fill in 4
squares in a row, yell "BINGO!!!"

Students turn
over bingo sheet.

We will then watch a 5 min video by


the NGV on Conservation.

Students watch
PowerPoint, taking
down information
to fill in BINGO
squares.

Lastly, you will be put in 4 different


groups. Each group will be assigned a
different art form to research on the
Australian Institute for the

Conservation of Cultural Material


(AICCM)
You will be given an 'artwork' which
you will need present to the class:
1. Describe your object. What
materials is it made of? How old is it?
Is it rare and valuable?
2. Explain the main causes of
deterioration in your object.
3. Explain the treatments used to
conserve and preserve it.
Closure

Instruct students to paste in their filled
in BINGO sheets into their Visual Diary
for future reference.
