Life Cycle Unit

Purpose:
The purpose of this summative assessment is to help the teacher and students
determine if they have successfully mastered the learning targets in this unit, and
to indicate to the teacher if the cohesive unit was successful in terms of learning
and understanding of life cycles. In this assessment, students should be able to
show their understanding of the elements a plant or animal needs to survive, be
able to recognize the difference between a young and adult animal or plant, as well
as list and describe all parts or stages of a dragonflys, a horses, and a plants life
cycle. These organisms were picked in order to illustrate to students that the details
of life cycles can vary between organisms. This assessment will be given at the end
of the Life Cycles unit, and the results of this assessment will inform the teacher
about students levels of mastery in regards to the learning targets, and if any
material needs to be readdressed before moving onto the next unit.
Content Expectations:
L.OL.E.1 Life Requirements- Organisms have basic needs. Animals and plants need
air, water, and food. Plants also require light. Plants and animals use food as a
source of energy and as a source of building material for growth and repair.
L.OL.02.14 Identify the needs of plants.
L.OL.E.2 Life Cycles- Plants and animals have life cycles.
Both plants and animals begin life and develop into adults, reproduce, and
eventually die. The details of this life cycle are different for different organisms.
L.OL.02.22 Describe the life cycle of familiar flowering plants including the following
stages: seed, plant, flower, and fruit.

Directions: (to be read aloud to students prior to beginning of the test)
This test is over the whole Life Cycles unit, and will have questions about the needs
of living things, the differences between a young and adult animal and plant and
will also ask questions about the life cycles of a dragonfly, a horse, and a plant.
There are 20 questions on this exam, and they are all worth one point each. There
are 5 True/False, 5 Fill in the Blank, and 10 Multiple Choice questions. You will be
provided a word bank for the Fill in the Blank section. Record all of your answers on
this test. After each question, please fill in a smiley face to indicate if you were
sure or not sure of your answer. The happy face means you are sure, and the
sad face means you are not sure.
If you have any questions on the test, please raise your hand and I will come to help
you. When you are done with you test bring it up to my desk and put it in the basket
face down. You may read quietly or work on other homework when you are finished,
but there will be no talking until everyone is done with their test. Youll have 45
minutes to complete the test, which is plenty of time so dont rush!
