Question
9 x 0.6 = ?
DISCUSS: How might we work out
the answer?
6 x 1.3 = ?
6 x 1.3
We can think of 1.3 instead as
13 10.
So lets re-write this...
(6 x 13) 10
Now we can solve 6 x 13 like
we normally would...
78 10
And we know that dividing by
10 means moving the decimal
point one place to the left...
78 10 = 7.8
6 x 1.3 = 7.8
2.91 x 3.2
2.91 x 3.2
2.91 x 3.2
We can ignore the decimals for
now and think of both numbers as
whole numbers...
2.91 x 3.2
291 x 32 =
291
x 32
2.91 x 3.2
291
x 32
9312
2.91 x 3.2
Now that we have our answer, we
need to add the decimal point
back in.
An easy way to do this:
Count the number of numbers
to the right of the decimal
places in the original question
291
x 32
9312
2.91 x 3.2
2.91 x 3.2
There are three numbers to the
right of the decimal points
2.91 x 3.2
9.3 1 2
And so we place a decimal in our
answer so that there are also three
numbers to the right of the decimal
point.
