Chapter I

INTRODUCTION
To develop a nation, one must ultimately develop its
people, for what is nation but most intrinsically its citizens. A
reform

agenda

thus,

at

its

heart,

requires

human

development reform agenda that ensures that basic human

needs are amply addressed by the government. Human
development refers to the improvement of the life quality of
the nations citizens. Institutions are the kinds of structures
that matter in the social realm: they make up the stuff of
social life. An institution is a relatively permanent structure of
social patterns, roles, and relations that people enact in
certain sanctioned and unified ways for the purpose of
satisfying basic social needs. The increasing acknowledge of
the role of institution is instructed in terms of easily seen or
implied rules. It is not a person or group, it is part of the
culture, a patterned segment of the way of life of a people.
There are six basic institutions that provided by Dr. Epitacio S.
Palispis in his book entitled Introduction to Sociology and
Anthropology there are following: the familial institution, the
educational institution, the economic institution, the political

institution, the recreational institution and lastly is the

religious institution.
Religious institutions play a significant role in society
globally,

nationally,

regionally,

and

locally.

This

is

the

institution that satisfies mans basic social need for a

relationship with God. It always includes moral and ethical
systems indicating the rightness or wrongness of both
external and conceptual patterns of behavior. Religion shapes
the attitude and values of individuals and societies in terms of
social behavior, economic activity and political involvement
and societies in terms of social behavior, economic activity
and political involvement, and in many few areas. Durkheim,
in his classical study, The Elementary Forms of Religious
Life, defines religion as a unified system of beliefs and
practices related to sacred things. He also stipulated that
religion divide the universe into two mutually exclusive
categories: the profane and the sacred. As a major social
institution, religion performs a number of functions in the
society. In many societies, religious values predominate in the
family, and the political and educational institutions. The

religious institutions seek to make the moral and social orders

more similar. They actively endorse certain economic policies
and they may even influence the government. They also offer
codes of conduct, promotes social solidarity in the community,
they also legitimize the established and dominant groups
within the society. It also served as a unifying and integrating
force among people of different historical origins and racial
backgrounds. It provides guidance and becomes a means of
social control. Religious institutions perform welfare and
recreational functions, in addition to meeting the spiritual
needs; they also attend to the temporal and bodily needs of
their members. Church, ecclesia, denomination, sect, religious
movements and the universal church are the examples of
religious institutions

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The research study was deemed consequential for some
reason.
To the Individuals, Members and Respondent:
They will be endowed with greater light on the role of
religious institutions where they belong in their human

activities, programs of these religious institution in order to
promote human development and be one of the contributing
factors or institution to the human development.
To the Researchers:
This may serve as a baseline data by the future
researchers as they my use this as their reference for
analogous research study.
