Conclusion 11: Military Robots- A Glimpse from Today and Tomorrow (IEEE, December

2004)

Future Combat Systems will be a system capable of autonomously controlling any of

several vehicles designated by the Army, including the Multi-functional Utility Logistics
Equipment platform, the Armed Reconnaissance Vehicle, Manned Ground Vehicles and

other combat or non-combat machines.

Although many of the technologies that support robotics cross-pollinate very well
between the elements, current defense research programs focus on niche areas of military
robotics which include: Sensors: Military robots must have accurate sensing of their
environment, allowing the robotic system to perceive its surroundings thus permiuing

controlled movement.
Future Combat System with Multi-Vehicle Coordinated Flights and Multi Vehicle

Distributed Control their will be a need of control for all these robots.
Robot Control/Operation Robots are broadly classified because of their control into: Tele
operated robots: These kinds of robots arc controlled by a remote control (radio/cable)

link to give instructions or retrieve information.

Nano Robots Wars of the future might not involve actual human combat as much as they

would be a series of preemptive strikes against the "enemy's" Nano robots.

3 Military Robots in Action Many robots are being used for mine detection, surveillance

and even combat missions.

Bomb defusing robots are controlled by an operator using a remote control from a safe

distance.
The communication with other robots in the field for collaborative operation with less but

complete information exchange plays a vital role in the state of military operation.
Most current and planned military robots involve a human in the decision making cycle

while the robot is in operation.

It can be concealed in places considered too small or risky for humans and provide
continuous electronic intelligence gathering, resistance to adverse environmental factors
(such as fatigue, cold, precipitation, heat, etc.). The system allows one operator to control
several installations located along the perimeter, around sensitive facilities or bases.
