Engage
The Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance is a broad
international network of churches and Christian
organizations cooperating in advocacy on global trade
and on HIV and AIDS. Alliance participants represent
tens of millions of Christians around the world who
share the conviction that advocacy against unjust
structures, practices and attitudes should not be a task
we engage in when it is convenient, but must be a
fundamental requirement of living out our faith.

By working together, Alliance participants are better
able to challenge the policies and practices of
governments, international institutions, corporations and
our own communities in order to bring about a more just,
peaceful and sustainable world. Strategic actions take
place at a variety of levels and use different methods,
including lobbying, education, grassroots campaigning,
and capacity building. The Alliance partners with other
faith-based and civil society organizations to achieve
common goals.

Change
When the churches and their rich array of
organizations, networks, educational institutions, and
agencies agree to focus their collective energies on
specific issues, important changes in global structures
and local communities can be achieved. In tackling the
HIV pandemic and the injustices in the international
trading system, the Alliance promotes a vision of a world
where all live in dignity, security and peace.
HIV and AIDS Campaign
AIDS
The HIV pandemic is one of the gravest challenges
facing the world today. The disease robs millions
of their lives and devastates the fabric and
livelihood of families, communities and nations.
All churches are living with HIV and AIDS. Because
HIV and AIDS touch on many fundamental teachings
and practices of the church, this pandemic challenges the
very essence of what it means to be the church and live
out the love of Christ in the world.
Keep the Promise
The Alliances 2005-2008 campaign, Keep the
Promise holds individuals, religious leaders, faith
organizations, governments and intergovernmental
organizations accountable for the commitments they
have made and advocates for further efforts in the fight
against HIV and AIDS.
The Alliance advocates for:
I The dignity and rights of people living with HIV or
AIDS and for an attitude of care and solidarity that
rejects all forms of stigmatization and
discrimination.
I Prevention activities that address root causes of
vulnerability, with particular attention to women and
girls.
I Mobilizing resources to prevent the transmission of
HIV, particularly among vulnerable populations, and
for the care and support of people living with and
affected by HIV and AIDS.
I Universal access to treatment for people living with
HIV and AIDS.
I Accountability to ensure governments and policy
makers meet the targets they have agreed to in the
fight against HIV and AIDS.
Global Trade Campaign
Trade
The Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance is committed
to working for justice in global trade. Trade is not
an end in itself, but should be an instrument for the
promotion of human well-being, sustainable
communities and economic justice.
We seek a world where global trade systems give priority
to people who live in poverty. The biblical standard for
economic activity is justice and taking the side of the
poor: fair payment, transparent relationship, no
exploitation, and respect for life.
Trade for People, Not People for Trade
The 2005-2008 global campaign, Trade for People - Not
People for Trade, works to build a movement of people
within the churches and church-related organizations to
promote trade justice. It calls for recognizing that human
rights agreements have priority over trade agreements.
The campaign advocates for:
I The right to food and sustainable agriculture, and the
promotion of greater self-reliance in developing
countries.
I Access for all to essential services such as health,
water, and education and access to essential
medicines particularly for HIV and AIDS.
I The regulation of transnational corporations that
ensures that they contribute to poverty eradication,
promotion of human rights and protection of the
environment.
