Ourcontentobjectiveforthislessonwas:thestudentwillbeabletodraw
evidencefromthepassagetocreatetheirownimmigrationstory.IbelievethatJackmet
thisobjectivebecauseheincludedkeydetailsfromthelessonintotheimmigrationstory
thathecreated,andalsowentintofurtherdetailabouthisimmigrationstorywhenhewas
readingittous.Ourlanguageobjectivewas:thestudentwillbeabletosummarizehow
immigrationtotheUnitedStateswasacontroversialissue.Afterwatchingthevideoand
readingthepassage,wehadanopenconversationwithJack.Heshowedthathemetthis
objective,becausehedescribedsituations,suchashopefulimmigrantscomingtothe
UnitedStatesandeitherbeingturnedawayortreatedpoorlybyAmericancitizens.
ThemainvocabularywordsthatwerepresentedtoJackinthislessonwere:
immigration,immigrant,emigrant,andEllisIsland.Whenwepresentedthevocabulary
wereadthewordstoJack,andthenaskedhimifheknewanyofthedefinitionsbefore
wereadthemtohim.Jackdidagreatjobatdefiningthewords,sothisaspectofhis
vocabularyandlanguagedevelopmentwasnotgreatlychallenged,andasaresultitjust
madehimthinkalittle.Throughoutthelessonweaskedhimtousethevocabularyto
describethevideothatwasshown,describethepassagethatheread,andalsotobeused

inouropenconversation.IbelievethatthiswasmorechallengingforJacktoincorporate
allofthesewordstoanswersquestions,buthewassuccessfulindoingso.
IbelievethatoverallthelessonwasatagoodlevelforJack.Inthefuture,I
wouldchangethevideothatisshown.Thevideohadalotofimportantinformationand
displayedaverygoodexampleoftheimmigrationprocess;however,thevideowas
silent,blackandwhite,andalsohadsubtitlestoberead.Ifeelasifthissectionofour
lessonJacklostinterestafterthefirstminuteofthevideo.Inthefuture,avideowitha
narratorwouldbemoreideal.Wealsodescribedexamplesoftestquestionsthat
immigrantswouldhavebeenaskedatEllisIsland.Ithinkthatthispartwasimportant,
andthatJackfounditinteresting;however,thisactivitytheteacherverballyshowingthe
questions.IbelievethatweshouldhaveeithergivenJackacopyofthequestions,or
evenprojectedthemontothescreenforhimtovisualize.
IfthislessonweretaughttoanEnglishLanguageLearner,itwouldhavebeen
moredifficult,especiallysinceourlessoncontainedalotofconversationandreading.
Forourreadingpassage,Ithinkthatwewouldhaveneededtochooseashorterpassage
thatwaspossiblyalevellower.Wewouldhaveneededtoprovideavideothathada
narrator;however,itcouldbeeffectivetoleavethesubtitlesupsothestudentcouldread
andlistentotheinformationatthesametime.Thelessoncouldalsobemoreeffectiveif
therewasstillthreeteachers,andtwoteacherstaught,whilethethirdteachersatwiththe
studenttoreinforcetheinformationthatwasbeingpresented.
