7.1 Preparation of Work

Surface of the concrete slab shall be cleaned free from dirt, dust, grease, oil, wax, curing
compounds and any other loose contaminating materials. Substrate of any protrusion or
substances shall be chipped and removed by using chipping hammer.

Figure 2: Removing Concrete Protrusion

Figure 3: Cleaning With Broom

Survey marking for tile laying and datum level line 1m above the finished floor level shall marked
on floor and wall.

Figure 3: Checking Level of Substrate Surface from the Datum Line

Delivered Tile to the site shall be checked for sizes, thickness and colours are as specified.
Cement grout or Tile adhesive shall be checked for suitability for the conditions to which the
tiling will be used. Tile grout shall be checked for compatibility with specification and colour of
the tile.

7.2 Installation and Fixing of Floor Tiles

Screed of 1:4 cement-sand mortar shall be laid on cleaned floor and level bellow tile thickness
plus 2mm grout thickness level from the Finished Floor Level, using established datum level.
Overall level of the finished floor shall be control by means of a spot check levels.

Tile layout planning shall be consider the size of tiles used and the shape of the area to be tiled.
As a general rule, the layout shall be planned from the center of the tiling area working outwards
to give an even tile width around the floor perimeter. Mockup lay shall be done to clarify the
quality and to correct any discrepancies of positioning grove lines of wall tiles. Care shall be
taken to minimize the number of tiles that need to be cut for satisfactory visual effect. Cut Tile
shall be of width greater than half of the tile size. Sloping shall be maintained to comply with
approved shop drawings.

Figure 5: Principle of Centering the Tile

The intermediate substrates between screed/bases and tiles shall be ordinary Portland cement
grout or tile adhesive material comply with tile or as specified by the manufacturer. Cement grout
bedding shall be evenly spread on the screed using notched trowel. Then, tiles shall be laid on
the cement grout align with the markings. Tiles shall be taped to level to the finish level by using

rubber mallet. Groves of 3mm width shall be maintained using tile spacers.

Figure 6: Tile Laying on Bedding Material while Maintaining Groves using Spacer Blocks
Grouting of the joints shall be carried out within a period of 24 hours of the completion of the
laying of tiles. Tooling of the tile groves shall be after grouting to fill the grout firmly into the
tile grove.
Surface finish level shall be check using straight edge and spirit level to ensure adjoining tiles
are continuous from one surface to the next.

7.3 Installation and Fixing of Wall Tiles

Check all openings and conduits for mechanical, electrical and plumbing were provided and
covered comply with the method statement for plastering. Rough finished wall plaster shall be
provide to level the wall surfaces prior to receive wall tiles.
Tile setout line shall be marked on the plaster to avoid any unsightly visual impact of switches &
power points. Tile adhesive or cement grout shall be applied to the surface with notched trowel
to a thickness of approximately 3~4mm.

Figure 9: Allocating switches at edge of tiles

Tiling around pipes, electrical sunk boxes, etc. shall be neatly cut and fit. General grove width of
3mm shall be maintained along the cut edges.

7.4 Grouting
To achieve consistency of pointing colour, grouting to one location shall be carried out in one
operation using the same mix ratio. The tile joints shall be filled completely with the grout paste
by using a soft trowel.
Excessive grout bleeding through the groves in the tile joint shall be removed using point tool.
Tile shall be cleaned thoroughly with damp sponge usually after 3 hours when the tiles appear
firm enough.
