CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
Economic growth in Malaysia, especially in Johor Bahru had effected on people
consumptive behavior. The behavior reflected on increasing number of motorized
vehicles, as this matter is cause by transport policy and regulation such as period of
vehicles can be used. Increasing population of motorized vehicles on Johor Bahru
city roads was made air pollution and road congestion.
Congestion and air pollution is the serious problem and facing by many cities in
Malaysia including Johor Bahru. Johor Bahru is second largest city in Malaysia after
Kuala Lumpur. Congested condition at Kuala lumpur city, where vehicles moved in
slow traffic, now happen in Johor Bahru city.
Many methods had been made by authorities to reducing congestion that happen in
Johor Bahru city roads, such as road alteration and road broadening. But, the
congestion problem still rising and cannot be reduce thoroughly. This is because;
several factor that obstructing process of congestion reduction.
New innovation is strongly needed in order to help reducing congestion. The
innovation is make the Johor Bahru city becoming the city with concept of nonmotorized vehicle, which is through development of specific lane special for bicycle,
especially in road that always facing with congestion, and in this case is Johor Bahru
city roads.

Purpose of this research is to deeply know how transportation condition in Johor


bahru city. Another that, the purpose is to creating better transportation
arrangement of Johor Bahru city with non-motorized vehicle revitalization concept.

CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE REVIEW
Non-motorized vehicles are vehicles that are not equipped with actual motor but
manpower, for instance bicycle. Cycling is becoming one of the transports that
derived from a hobby at the end of the 19th century.Cycling is part of active
transport that people use to move from one place to another primary destination.
Johor Bahru city road is an important road that connect the city with other places
such as Skudai, Danga Bay, Larkin and other focus area that people always using to
go their intended destination.
The bike path is a special path intended for traffic to cyclists, separated from traffic
motor vehicles to increase traffic safety cyclists. The use of bicycles is necessary
given the facilities to improve safety its users and could increase traffic speeds for

bike users. In addition, the use of bicycles should be encouraged as energy efficient
and does not emit significant air pollution
Bicycle lane is a lane specifically for bicycle user and non-motorize vehicle that use
human power to move that kind of vehicle
