Notebook #5

Fleming Left Hand Rule: applicable to motors and not generators.

Function of motor: input to a motor is its magnetic field (North and South poles), other input is
current
Output is rotation/force (force on conductor causes it to rotate)
4 facts:
1. Hold fingers as oriented like the picture below
2. Direction of magnetic field: represented by index finger (first finger). Points towards
south
3. Direction of flow of current: represented by middle finger (second finger)
4. Flux (thrust, direction of motion of current carrying conductor): represented by thumb,
which is at a right angle to index and middle finger
2 conventions:
1. Magnetic field lines always point from North to South
2. Direction of electric currents flow from + to

Flemings Right Hand Rule: when a conductor is forcibly moved within a magnetic field, there is
a relationship b/t magnetic field, current and applied force.
Forefinger: represents direction of the line of force

Second finger: represents the direction of induced current

Thumb: points in the direction of force or motion

Electricity: is the property of charged particles (protons & electrons) and is a form of energy that
is transmitted through wires in order for objects to operate/function. When these particles are at
rest, it is known as static electricity. When these particles are moving (flowing) through a
conductor, this is known as current electricity.
Magnetism: type of repulsive or attractive force that acts up to a certain distance; this distance is
known as the magnetic field (also described as the spinning of electrons). This attractive or
repulsive force is caused by moving electric charges; also called lines of force.
Relationship b/t electricity and magnetism (electromagnetism): electric current flowing through a
wire produces a circular field around the fire known as magnetic field lines- the direction of the
field lines is dependent on the direction of current flowing through the wire.
According to Faraday, if magnetic fields are changed through a wire, then electric current will be
produced. Relation b/t magnetism and electricity at atomic level: both use + and forces.
Because these 2 different charges occur within the atom, the phenomenon of electromagnetism
occurs.
