Instructional Objective
Following a discussion on diphthongs, the students will practice using words that have -oy and
-oi. They will underline -oi and -oy in a list of words, and correct sentences that have -oi and -oy
words that may or may not have been spelled incorrectly. This will be done with 80% accuracy.
NYS Standards and Indicators
Language Arts (NYS Standard RF3.3): Reading: Foundational Skills
Students will know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Indicator:
This will be evident when students are able to correctly identify the correct spelling of words that
have -oi and -oy in it.
Language Arts (NYS Standard SL.3.6): Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas
Students will speak in complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to
provide requested detail or clarification.
Indicator:
This will be evident when students volunteer their answers to any questions given.
Motivation
Students will volunteer some words that sound have the -oy and -oi sound.
Materials
Tape, SMART Board, worksheets, pictures, sentence strips, paper clips, scissors, and pencils.
Strategies
Direct instruction, indirect instruction, cooperative learning, and hands on involvement.
Adaptations
The student who has Spina Bifida will have a special desk and chair. She also has a health aid in
the classroom.
Differentiation of Instruction
The teacher realizes that not all students work at the same ability level. Therefore, the students
will be separated by ability level in three groups. The lower and average ability level groups will

be given three sentences to practice. The higher level ability group will be given four sentences
to practice.
Developmental Procedures
The teacher will discuss the sounds made by -oy and -oi using words and pictures. (What does it
sound like? What are some other words that sound this way? How might you spell a word that
sounds this way?)
The students will underline -oy and -oi in a list of words. (How many words had -oy and -oi?
Were you able to find them all? Were the letters always at the end of the word? Give an example
of a word that has either -oy or -oi at the beginning or in the middle of the word.)
The students will determine if the underlined word in a sentence is spelled correctly. (How did
you determine the correct spelling of the word? Why did you choose a different spelling for some
of the words? Why did you not change some of the underlined words?)
The students will review the misspelled words as a class by placing the correct word in the
sentence on the sentence strip. (How did your answers differ from those of your classmates?
Were they the same? What mistakes did you make? What mistakes did your classmates make?
What misconceptions led to mistakes?)

Assessment
The teacher will observe on a teacher created checklist:
Students understanding by correctly underlining -oy and -oi on the first worksheet.
Students understanding by correctly identifying the misspelled words on the second worksheet
and on the sentence strips.
Independent Practice
The students will determine how to spell a word based on the picture given.
Direct Teacher Intervention
For students who did not meet the objective, the teacher will provide these students with small
group direct instruction from the teacher. The teacher will use pictures and examples to help
students gain the tools to determine which diphthong is to be used.
Academic Enrichment
For students who met and exceeded the objective of the lesson, they will create a story using a
minimum of eight words that have -oi and -oy in the word.
