Introduction

Journals are very important for everyone to keep.

Great writers, scientists, mathematicians,
historians and actors all kept journals and diaries to
record the events in their lives or notes on their
experiments and work.
There are many types of journals which can be kept
but whatever the reason journal writing is critical to
developing creativity and communication skills. As
such, it should be a part of our childrens education
and form part of their daily routine. Journals can
be done as a begin the day activity or an end the
day activity at a minimum of three times per
week.
Journals in my opinion are prized possessions that
should be treasured by children and parents. After
all they reflect what happened in your life, what
you did or didnt do on a particular day, how you
felt, who you met etc Journal Writing develops
problem solving skills, critical thinking, the
imagination and creativity. Sometimes parents,
even teachers do not know where to begin when it
comes to journal writing and are often at a loss as
to what topics or prompts to use.
www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

This is why this journal was developed. It provides

a starting point for the teacher who wants to get
children into journal writing, and has been
formatted with prompts and guidelines to assist in
the process. The outline on each page shares
information either based on facts or from the
authors experience to stimulate students
thoughts and guide discussion. The journal covers
a wide range of areas and gives the child the
opportunity to share personal experiences and
feelings, knowledge of other subject areas and to
reflect on actions and activities.
Reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary and other
content areas such as Social Studies, Science,
Values, Character and Citizenship Education are all
linked together in this journal to draw upon the
childs previous experience and knowledge and to
provide him/her with the opportunity to use factual
information and the imagination to express self.
Each page also includes a Thought for the Day
that allows the child to apply the topic to his/her
life in a meaningful way. It is meant to help the
child to develop positively and to think about selfimprovement.

Guidelines for Use:

1.Time: Choose a specific time to do journal

writing everyday. Let it be a routine to which
they get accustomed to and even look forward
to. The evening time is usually good to close
off the day.
2.Selection of Topics: The topics in the journal
do not have to be followed in sequence but can
be selected on content area being taught in the
classroom. (Dates will be recorded on the first
line of each page.)
3.Teacher Selected Topics: Teachers can use
their own prompts or topics to write about that
are not included in the journal. The free pages
at the back can be used for this.
4.Pre-journaling Activities: Before going to
the journal, the teacher can read an
appropriate story, show a video or teach a
lesson on the selected topic. Even songs,
poems or pictures can be used to introduce the
topic, brainstorm ideas and lead into the
journaling discussion and writing activity.
5.Topic Discussion: Use the outline on each
page to discuss topics properly with children so
that they feel confident about what they will be
www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

writing. The topic content can even be

expanded by the teacher to include other
aspects.
6. Grouping Activities: Most of the activities
are individual but pairing can be done for
certain activities such as making a list of
privileges. This will bring a new dimension into
the process as children can choose a friend to
work with and compare some of the privileges
they have that are same/ different.
7.Drawings & Pictures: Some of this is
included in the journal but the student can
always draw a picture and attach to the page
using a paper clip, staple or glue. Pictures can
also be attached e.g. of self, family, favourite
place, superhero etc
8.Care of Journals: Encourage students to
keep journals in excellent condition after all
they are to be treasured. If possible let the
teacher store these in school to reduce wear
and tear, destruction, loss or theft.
9.Handwriting in Journals: Ensure that
students use well sharpened pencils to write
with to improve the quality of their handwriting
in journals. Even though the focus is on
content, writing can still be neat, legible and
organized. Give a gentle reminder but dont
www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

over-emphasize and make it a problem as this

will discourage some students.

Marking of Journals

Entries in journals facilitate the writing process and

should not be marked for errors. They really allow
the child to express himself/ herself without the
worry of spelling, punctuation and other
grammatical errors. The content and what is
written is more important than how it is written and
this is what allows the child to freely express
himself. As the child writes the teacher will see the
improvement in spelling, expression and other
language skills over time.

Holidays are a wonderful part of growing

up. School closes, no more homework, getting up
early or hustling about on mornings. We look
forward to just being home or perhaps spending

that time by our grandparents or visiting another

country. Some of us just laze around, relax, watch
television, go to the movies and lime while others
may hardly go out, have lots of chores and even
have to study. Having a proper balance is
important so we should manage our time properly
and do a bit of everything. Make time for relaxing,
liming, reading a good book or the newspapers, put
in some studying, help with the chores (you have a
responsibility to do so). Play outdoor games like
cricket, football, rounders, hopscotch, jump rope,
tag and hide and seek. These are forms of exercise
and will strengthen you. Tie a hammock or swing
under a tree and enjoy the cool evenings and if you
dont have a tree plant one, make it a project and
do some gardening while youre at it! Life is full of
wonderful things to do!

ACTIVITY:
1.

On the next page write about your holidays:

who you spent it with, where you went
and what you did.
www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

Was it balanced doing a variety of activities or

did you spend too much time indoors just
sitting around?
3. Write about some of the exciting things you
did, places you visited and games you played.
2.

Thought for the Day

Live life doing positive things and you will

grow into an adult who will do positive
things. You are never too small to make a
difference! So start now doing small things of
great value and you will end up making a big
difference in your school, in your community
and in this world.

TOPIC: How I Plan to Spend My Next Holiday

Your Summer Vacation is the longest

holiday you get during the year. You get to spend
about fifty-six days at home away from school.
Imagine all the great things you could have done
had you planned for this holiday. Planning is very
important as it helps us to use our time wisely and
OUTLINE:

www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

to balance our activities doing a bit of everything,

instead of too much of one thing. When you make
a plan you have a list of things to do or goals to
achieve, you are more organized and you get more
done. You can have your parents/ guardians take
a look at your list because you will need their help
in doing the things you listed. After all if you plan
to go to the beach they are the ones who will have
to take you there. Your parents/ guardians can also
help you add activities on your list that you may
not have thought about.

ACTIVITY:

Think about how you will spend your next

Summer Vacation and make a list of the things
you want to do.
2. Make sure it is balanced and includes a variety
of activities. Give details. For example, I will
1.

plant a mango tree, a pomerac tree, two lime

trees and 6 tomato plants at the back of my
house or I will do work in Mathematics,
Reading, Spelling and Vocabulary every
morning from 9 oclock to 12 oclock 6 days a
week.

Thought for the Day

Live life joyfully, especially with those around

you. Balancing your time means you get to
enjoy a bit of everything and not miss out on
all the great adventures waiting out there for
you. Going outdoors means getting to meet
new people and increasing your experiencesgood and bad. Its what makes life
interesting. Every day is a new and exciting
journey. Choose how you want to spend each
day and make it more meaningful and
memorable. Time flies so enjoy the
moments.

TOPIC: My Worst Day Ever

Not all our days are great all the time.

Sometimes terrible things happen; maybe you
were ill or someone you know, maybe you didnt go
anywhere or you had classes all holidays.
Christmas holidays and birthdays are usually the
worst when we dont get lots of presents or when
we dont get the present we want.
OUTLINE:

ACTIVITY:

Thought for the Day

Dont worry when things go bad. Facing

disappointments and difficult situations make
us stronger and build character. We learn
how to be more patient and how to cope with
such problems when they arise. We even

TOPIC: Following Rules A Rule I Broke

Everywhere we go there are rules, rules,

rules! Rules at home, rules at school, rules for
games, rules for writing, rules for just about
everything. Rules can be frustrating at times,
especially when we dont want to follow them, but
they are there for our protection. Without rules
there would be chaos or madness; people would do
whatever they wanted and when they wanted.
Drivers would drive on any side of the road, people
would go t0 the grocery and pick up things without
paying and children would come to school with
OUTLINE:

knives and guns. Rules are very important

because they keep us safe by keeping order and
saying what is right or wrong. When we dont
follow rules we are more likely to end up as
criminals. We should all follow the rules in school
and at home so that when we grow up it would be
easier for us to follow rules in the workplace and
the laws of our country. If everyone followed rules
there would be no crime and violence and we
would live in peace.

ACTIVITY:

1.
Think about a time when you broke the
rules. Where were you and what rule did you
break?
2.
Were you caught?
3.
Write about your experience, what you did
and how you felt.
4.
Make a decision also and say if you will
continue to break the rules or if you will choose
to follow them from now on.

Thought for the Day

Wherever you go and whatever you do follow

the rules. Your life will be easier and more
productive. Learn to keep the rules from
now, so that when you become an adult you
will be respected for being an upright citizen
of your country. You can make a difference
when you follow the rules. You will help
make your home, your school and your
country a safer, more peaceful place to live
in.

TOPIC: Me- I am Special

Sometimes I am sure you do not feel

special but dont worry; having feelings like this is
a normal part of growing up. The important thing
is to remember that you are in fact very, very
special and the world would never be the same if
you were not a part of it. Think about it, there is no
one else like you in this world so who will replace
you? Sure somebody out there might look like you
but he/she cannot do all the things that you do or
talk like you or think like you in the exact same

way. You are unique, one of a kind created by

design! You have a purpose in this world and you
are destined for greatness, imagine that! Every
person has a special talent, you just have to find
yours; some people even have more than one.
Are you good at gardening, cooking, sewing,
painting, singing, drawing, building things, playing
a musical instrument, writing stories/poems/songs,
repairing things, Mathematics, Science? You have a
gift that sets you apart from others and when you
use your gift/talent to do good and to bring joy to
others something wonderful happens- You become
special to them!

ACTIVITY:

1.
On the next page describe yourself (height,
hair length and colour, eyes, skin complexion
and body shape). Write what you like about
yourself. Do you like that you have grey eyes,
or smooth skin, perhaps a cute nose, rosy
cheeks or even strong arms?
2.
Say what you talent is also, when did you
know you had this talent and a few things you
have done with your talent. You may also
attach a picture of yourself with a paperclip.

We know that we are all special and we

know that no one is perfect! There are things we
like about ourselves and there are things we may
not like about ourselves. We should always try to
improve on those characteristics that we do not
like so that we can become better persons.
Everyday we should grow in a positive way. We
must get rid of bad habits and actions that keep us
from becoming successful. If we dont like revising
then we will not improve or excel in our school
work so this is a habit that we must change. We
are young and we are growing so it is important to
learn to do the right thing from now. Its never too

late to change! When we do this we will see

qualities in ourselves that are admirable and we
will like ourselves even more. Better yet when
others see positive qualities in us they too will like
us. Our parents, teachers, neighbours and friends
will be proud to be associated with us.

ACTIVITY:

1.
Make a list of positive (good) and negative
(bad) qualities about yourself. Are you funny,
helpful, hardworking and prayerful or are you
quarrelsome, complaining, dishonest and
uncooperative?
2.
What would you like to change about
yourself?

TOPIC: Me- My Rights and My Responsibilities

Children have rights by law to ensure that

they grow up in a safe environment and receive the
necessary care and love they need. These rights
were established by the United Nations and are for
children all over the world. You have a right to a
name at birth, a right to practice your religious
beliefs, a right to live with your parents and to
have food, shelter, clothing, personal space,
freedom of speech, equal opportunity and
OUTLINE:

www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

education. The right to education is for every child

but in some countries children do not go to school
because of war or because their parents cannot
afford to send them. In our country every child
gets a free education but this is not appreciated by
everyone. Children often stay at home for petty
reasons and they do not pay attention, revise or do
homework. What they do not understand is that
rights come with responsibilities. For every right
that you are given you have certain
responsibilities. Are you aware of your
responsibilities?

ACTIVITY:

1.
Complete the list by writing your
responsibility next to each right.
2.
Think carefully about what you write and
keep in mind that a responsibility is a job that
you must do or a duty; you have to do it,
whether you like it or not.

www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

Thought for the Day

You have rights that are given to you by law

but you cannot use them wrongly. These
rights have limitations and if you do not
exercise responsible behaviour they can be
taken away from you. A good citizen knows
his rights and how to act responsibly. He
also knows how to respect the rights of
others and how to live in society in harmony
with others.

TOPIC: Irresponsible Behaviours

A responsibility is a job that you have

to do. When you do not fulfill your responsibilities
other persons lives are affected. Even your own
life is affected by your negative behaviour. As
children you have a responsibility to follow the
OUTLINE:

rules at home, at school and in your country.

Remember rules are for your safety and to protect
your rights and the rights of others. You also have
the responsibility to be the best person you can be,
to look after your own belongings, to take care of
your body, to do your best at school, and to care
for those who are less fortunate or differentlyabled. You must respect the rights of others and
this includes their belongings/ personal property,
their bodies and their religious beliefs. When
people do not accept responsibility or behave
irresponsibly other people lose their rights and
they feel unhappy and unsafe.

ACTIVITY:

1.What are some of the negative behaviours that

affect another persons rights? Think about
what other people did to you or someone you
know that made you or the person feel
unhappy or unsafe. Think about how you
treated others also.
2.Use the map to make a list of those negative
behaviours or irresponsible behaviours that you
have come up with.

TOPIC: My Many Privileges

Many times children get confused about

what their rights are and what their privileges are.
They do not realize that rights and privileges are
not the same. A privilege is given to you as a
reward or on condition of good behaviour.
Privileges are earned; they are not rights to which
you are entitled to by law. If your teacher rewards
you with a pen for excellent work or gives you a
gift for your good behaviour, these are privileges
and not rights. The teacher does not have to do
these things. In the same way, when your parents
OUTLINE:

www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

or guardians provide you with snacks, spending

money, toys or birthday presents these are
privileges that you have been given by them and
not your rights. These privileges can be taken
away if you are not doing well at school and if you
are behaving irresponsibly in other ways. You
cannot make demands upon your parents for
things; remember privileges are earned. If you do
not earn them you cannot get them. Your parents
job is to provide you with the basic necessities of
food, clothing, shelter, love and education and to
bring you up according to their religious beliefs in a
safe environment. Anything else they provide you
with is done out of love, kindness and appreciation.
Many times they want you to have the things that
their parents could not afford to give them when
they were your age.
ACTIVITY:

Think of all the things that your parents give

you that they dont have to. Write down eight
(8) of these.
2. If you earned these privileges say what you did
you do to earn them? Did it have something to
do with your behaviour, school work or your
helpfulness at home?
3. If however, you did not earn them, say why you
think your parents give them to you still?

TOPIC: My Family

We all have families, though they are

different in size and composition, the people we

live with in a house are our family members.

Sometimes we may not even be related to them.
This happens when we are adopted. There are
other kinds of families too like the single-parent
family, nuclear family, extended family and
grandparent reared family. It doesnt matter if our
families are big or small, rich or poor, what matters
is that families provide love, and safety.
ACTIVITY:

1.Do you know what kind/type of family you

belong to? If you do write it on the first line
under the heading Type of Family and if you
dont find out later and then fill it in.
2.On the lines inside the house write the names
of those persons in your family, that is, all the
people who live in the same house with you
e.g. Andrew (dad), Tom (cousin).
3.In the box below the house write your familys
address.
Thought for the Day

Dont worry if your family is different to

someone elses, many family types exist all
over the world. No family is the same and
being rich or poor doesnt determine the
value of a family, it is the people and their
attitudes to one another that give value to a
family.

composition all families have things in common.

For example, sometimes families eat together,
watch television together or pray together.
Families are not perfect because people are not
perfect but each person in a family should seek the
best interest of the other to make family life more
pleasant. Adults in the home are to provide love,
food, clothing, shelter and education while the
younger ones are to listen to their parents or
guardians instructions to complete homework
early, do revision, pack away their things neatly
and to work co-operatively to help out with the
household chores. Complaining, back answering
and hiding from chores and other responsibilities
disrupt the harmony of the family unit and cause
stress and tension between adults and children.

ACTIVITY:

www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

Write about the things that your family does

together. Do you eat together, play games,
watch television, go shopping/church/ to the
movies or do you do gardening together?. How
do you feel when your family does activities
together?
2. Write about how you help out at home. What
chores do you do by yourself and when? What
chores does the family do together as a team
so that it gets done faster?

to make the family unit a happy one. Help
out at home, show kindness, love and
appreciation all the time and speak to one
another with respect. Your role is important
so have the right attitude; it will take you in

TOPIC: A Good Friend

In the same way that there are qualities we

will like and not like about ourselves, so too it is
with other persons. When we choose our friends it

is because of the good qualities that those persons

have. We should never befriend persons because
they are rich or because they can help us with our
work. When we do this we do it for our own selfish
reasons. A good friend will have good qualities and
will encourage you to do the right thing. A person
who gossips about you or encourages you to lie,
steal or behave irresponsibly is not a good friend.
A good friend is someone who is kind,
honest, dependable, and trustworthy.
Someone who spends time with you, shares
with you, respects your rights, encourages
you to make good decisions, helps you and
cares about your safety and wellbeing.

ACTIVITY:
1.

You have many friends in school or at home.

Choose one (1) friend and draw a picture of
him/her in the picture frame.

2.

On the lines at the bottom write:

The persons name
How long you have known this person for
What makes this person a good friend? Is
he honest, caring, funny ?
Explain what the person does to show this
characteristic in his/her behaviour. For
example, if he is caring maybe he visits
you when you are sick.

Thought for the Day

Choose your friends carefully! Good friends

add beauty to your life and bring joy. They
are a treasure and not a trouble. They help
you grow positively and not negatively. They
teach you right and not wrong.

TOPIC: My Favourite Superhero

Since you were a small child you have

been watching cartoons and movies about

superheroes. Maybe you liked Spiderman, Wonder

Woman, Batman, Ninja Turtles, Green Lantern or
some other superhero. Superheroes are truly super
because they have special powers or abilities.
They are super strong or can fly or can read your
mind. Most importantly though superheroes are
brave, smart, good, kind, helpful, honest, caring,
dependable and trustworthy. They care about the
safety and well-being of others. You may not be
able to fly in reality but you can be a superhero in
your own right. Everyday, you can make a
difference too by being a good child, student,
friend, neighbour, cousin and grandchild. When
you respect the rights of others and show
responsible behaviour you are the kind of friend
superheroes want on their team. So dont worry if
you dont have wings to fly, you can still soar in
your schoolwork and be your best every time. You
may not have big, bulging muscles but you have
millions of brain cells just waiting to be used. You
may not have x-ray vision but you can see right
from wrong and good from bad so that you can
make proper decisions. You may not have
everything you want in life yet but if you work hard
and stay honest you will get there.

ACTIVITY:

1.

Choose one (1) superhero and write everything

you know about him/her:
superheros name, place of birth, present
address, job, relatives
what special powers he/she has
describe the superhero and his costume
weakness that limits his/her powers e.g.
kryptonite , yellow light
you can attach a picture with a paperclip
on the page too

Thought for the Day

You too can be a superhero, just do your

utmost best every time and be the best
person you can at all times. Show respect,
be responsible, be a team player. Do good
and good will follow you, do bad and youll be
very sad!

TOPIC: An Animal I Would Like to Be

Animals are fascinating, whether we like

them or not. They are quite interesting and varied.
OUTLINE:

www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

Some animals have backbones like dogs, monkeys,

bears, snakes, whales and cats. Other animals do
not have backbones like worms , snails, octopi and
spiders. The largest animal in the world is the Blue
Whale, which is 30 metres long while the smallest
animal is the tardigrade, a very tiny invertebrate
which is only 0.5mm when fully grown. Animals
can make us happy or scare the daylights out of
our very being. Dogs and cats calm us and relieve
stress but a cave full of screeching bats or
slithering snakes may even likely bring on a heart
attack! Sometimes we wish we can be like animalsbrave as a lion, agile as a monkey or strong as a
bear. Animals have many qualities that we too
sometimes wish we had. Who wouldnt like to fly
like a bird, climb like a monkey or run like a horse?
Certainly, we have engaged our imaginations since
we were small; who can forget Ol Mc Donald had a
Farm? We clucked as chickens, mooed as cows
and neighed as horses. Animals truly are amazing
and fascinating creatures!

ACTIVITY:

1.Choose one (1) animal and write everything

you know about it:
www.stepbysteplearning1.webs.com

What is its name?

Where does it live?
What sound does it make?
How does it move?
What colour is it?
What does it eat?
How does it defend itself?
Include any other interesting facts that you
know about the animal as well.

Thought for the Day

Animals, especially pets are beautiful

creatures. We should take care of them and
not ill-treat or abuse them. After all, they
depend on us to take care of them. We
should feed them, love them and nurture
them when they are sick. Caring for our
pets, teach us how to be responsible and how
to take care of others.

TOPIC: What I Want to be When I Grow Up

Everyone, from small has a dream job of

who he/she wants to become when they grow up.
Sometimes we want to be just like our parents and
have the same jobs or we may want to do
something totally different. From kindergarten, we
role play being doctors, firemen, gardeners,
photographers, teachers and many other
occupations. The occupation you choose should be
one that makes you happy and gives you drive and
purpose. It should bring a smile to your face and
joy to your heart. More importantly though, you
should always do your work diligently and properly,
so that it is pleasing to your boss and to others.
Never do a job half-heartedly and of poor quality.
This will speak negatively about you. You should
OUTLINE:

also never steal, tell lies and stay away from work
unless absolutely necessary. Always remember:
An honest days work for an honest days pay.

ACTIVITY:

There are many occupations to choose from. Which

one interests you the most?
Think about the following:
1.What does the job require you to do?
2.What kind of clothing is worn by persons in this
job?
3.What makes this job special to you?

Thought for the Day

Choosing the right career is absolutely

important. Do not take it lightly. When you
choose the job you love, you enjoy going to
work every day but when you choose a job

for the wrong reasons, you end up feeling

miserable and eventually find that you are
unhappy and hate going to work. Your job
should always bring a smile to your face and
joy to your heart. Remember that!
