Part I: Descriptive Statistics

1.
on

Create a frequency table and bar graph for (a) gender and (b) discipline and comment
the results.

The bar graph shows males students represent 55.59% of the student body while being 22.07%
higher then females. Also 36.99% of students discipline is arts, which represent the most pick
discipline. Science is the least taken discipline representing 28.90% of the student body. With the
percentages being fairly close having a difference of 8.09%, we can conclude the disciplines are
evenly distributed.

Draw a histogram and a boxplot for gpa. Comment on the results

The histogram for GPA shows it is negatively skewed with majority of the GPA being low. The
box plot shows the same thing with two outliners

3.
the

Draw scatter plots of gpa versus (a) tv, (b) alcohol, and (c) computer. Comment on
results, explaining why there is a relationship or no relationship.

The scatter plot for GPA vs. (a) alcohol and (b) TV shows a negative relationship between the
two. The scatter plot for GPA vs. computer shows a positive relationship between the two.
4.
Create a table of gpa by discipline. The table should include mean, median, and
standard deviation for each discipline. Compare the results for the three disciplines.
The mean GPA among the three disciplines are fairly even with the difference of 14% between
Arts (highest) and Science (lowest). Science has the highest spread among the disciplines. The
data between Arts and Business are very similar with them having the same median 3.0.

Alternative Hypothesis: There is a relationship between GPA and a least one of the independent
variables independent variables computer, sleep, alcohol, TV, and exercise.
Test: Regression ANOVA
p-value interpet: 1.56E -46 or 0
Conclusion: We reject the null hypothesis since the p-value value is close to 0, which is less, then
0.05. There is very strong evidence supporting the significant relationship between GPA
and the independent variables computer, sleep, alcohol, TV, exercise.
b. Which of the independent variables significantly impact gpa and what is the
nature of
the effect (i.e. direction of the relationship)?
After observing the variables there were two independent variables that had a significant effect
on exam. TV with a p-value .003 has inverse relationship with GPA according to the
coefficient. Alcohol with a p-value close to 0 has inverse relationship with GPA according
to the coefficient.
c. Comment on the goodness of the regression.
The independent variables computer, sleep, TV, and alcohol account for 47.9% of the variance in
GPA and 52.1% are not accounted for. The regression is okay.
d. Comment on the assumptions of normality and constancy of variance.
After observing the Residual by Predicted chart we seen a violation of the constancy of variance
assumption because it was randomly distributed. The normal probability plot of residuals
shows it reasonably straight so normality suspect.
