As I said in my letter I believe in incorporating many different subjects together in order to

encourage critical thinking and problem solving skills; as well as to keep the topics more
engaging and fun for the students. Below are a few of the themes I will be using to tie many of
our subjects together this year.

Making math beautiful: We will be starting the year by using basic drawing skills to illustrate
how math is used in everyday life. We will continue referring to our original drawings as well as
adding to them as we progress through the year bringing in the shapes we are identifying as well
as depicting area and perimeter around our classroom and the students homes.
Go with the Flow: In this unit we will be working with technology, art, science and social
studies to show how water flows throughout our state and influences our lives.
In the Garden: During this unit we will learn about soil and apply our knowledge of the water
cycle and photosynthesis to grow a classroom garden. We will design the garden using our art
and math skills as well as talk about what kinds of things the early settlers planted along their
journey west.

The show must go on: As the students begin to learn about theater they will begin to prepare
multiple short scenes that will combine what they have been learning about fossils in science and
general Utah history in social studies this will give a brief performance of the history of our state.
School Report: As the students learn about how to interpret data in math we will put these skills
to test in the real world. All students will get into teams to create their own surveys of our school
and/or community. These surveys will be general questions about citizenship (social studies),
what to plant in our garden (science) and more!
The world around us: In this unit we will take the idea of citizenship a step further. As students
begin to talk about the media around them (art standard 4) they will create a presentation about a
topic in the state that interests them. They will then be asked to talk about its link to the state,
their opinion on it, and show a poll that they created relating to that topic.
My dream house: The students will design their dream house using area and perimeter. They
will then use that information to draw it to scale and next use Google Sketch-Up to create a 3D
model to scale of their home (art, math and technology).
Order in the court: As students learn about the judicial system they will use their acting skills
as well as their critical thinking skills to put on a mock trial. They will have to come up with
evidence to support or deny claims as well as work together to defend their claims.
