The Language of Composition:

Chapter of Choice: Opinionated Synthesis

Directions: For your next major writing assignment with The Language of Composition, choose
a chapter (6, 7, 8, 10, or 12) of personal interest to you.
Step 1: Each chapter begins with an introduction that poses a series of questions on the topic at hand.
Really ponder these questions before you begin reading in order to decide which chapter youll choose.
Step 2: Read and reflect on the articles within your chapter of choice. As you read, formulate your own
ideas on the topic. Note articles that strike you as particularly thought-provoking or intriguing. You should
take notes in order to summarize the articles main points and record your thoughts on the topic. You can
skip sections that deal with student writing or grammar lessons. Some of the questions posed at the end
of the articles might stimulate ideas for you. Likewise, some of the Suggestions for Writing at the
conclusion of certain chapters could assist in the process of formulating original ideas.
Step 3: Write a 5 page opinionated essay that synthesizes and cites ideas from at least four of the
articles within the chapter. Your voice must dominate the essay. Critically evaluate and analyze the ideas
presented within the chapter and draw your own conclusions about the content. It must be evident that
youve read the article based on your commentary. You are welcome to use more than five sources. To cite,
use the authors last name and page number(s). If there are more than three authors, use the first authors
last name followed by et al. Do not cite the editors as authors. Each article has its own author(s).
Step 4: Create an MLA works cited page individually citing each of the articles you drew ideas from. Your
works cited must include a minimum of 4 entries. This textbook is considered an anthology. If using
easybib.com, make sure you click on the option for citing a chapter or section within a book in order to
be directed to the correct form. It will prompt you to enter the authors name, the article title, and the
page range. Additionally, make sure that the book editors (Shea, Scanlon, and Aufses) are listed as
editors not authors.
Format:
MLA heading and running header
Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced
Include a title (centered)
Include correct parenthetical documentation to cite sources (for both direct quotes and paraphrased
ideas)
